Skype video calling no longer available?
« on: April 18, 2013, 01:31:09 PM »
I just received a pop up with a following text:

********
Dear User,

This is a reminder that this video calling service will no longer be available as of July 1, 2013. As an alternative service for your video communication needs, we recommend Skype™. For more information and software download, please visit http://www.skype.com .

Thank you.

Does anyone know what does it mean? Is this for real, or some kind of scam?

Suppose that no one of us wants the video calling feature to disappear!

Sounds very strange to me. I hope you did not click on the link. Many times its a virus, or worm.

Lily,
This came up on the Skype site?

On a maybe related note, my wife could no longer video conference on Skype with her mother as of several days ago. I'm relatively knowledgeable on the matter of both of their computers and could not get that one figured out. I assumed it was due to the difference of OS platforms difference of both machines. Just suddenly, neither web cam will turn on while they connect. They can speak though.

My Gal has been on Skype video twice today; once in morning and once about an hour ago.
A beautiful woman is pleasant to look at, but it is easier to live with a pleasant acting one.

As you may know Skype and MSN have merged in to Skype.
If you used an MSN account to log in to Skype it may be that it was running the MSN video call instead of the Skype one, and as all communications are transferring to Skype so will that one.

No it is not a dog. Its really how I look.  ;)

Слава Украине! Слава героям слава!Слава Україні! Слава героям!
translated as: Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the heroes!!!  is a Ukrainian greeting slogan being used now all over Ukraine to signify support for a free independent Ukraine

I don''t use MSN, just Skype.

No I did not click on anything for downloading. Also did not visited the skype.com site. My understanding is that they want us to download something from the skype site, in order to keep the video calling feature functional.

Is it safe to download it from the skype.com site?

Only if you go directly to the site, meaning you open your browser and type skype.com in the address bar.  If it is in a email, do not click on the link.  If you start up Skype, it should do an update itself and not need you to go to the site.

As far as I know Skype updates are automatic.
As BillyB advised if you were to update anything, never click a link as it may contain a link to another site that is potentially malicious.

Fund the audits, spread the word and educate people, write your politicians and other elected officials. Stay active in the fight to save our country. Over 220 generals and admirals say we are in a fight for our survival like no other time since 1776.

Lily so far you have been given very good advice here.

Be very careful with what you do!

You mentioned getting a 'pop-up'.

If you don't have Skype open and are just using your web browser when you get this pop-up, DO NOT click on it or try to update Skype! It is likely a virus waiting to infect your computer.

If you log into Skype the normal way, and everything looks normal and you get the pop-up then, you may update.

However, the best way to go about this is to not update, even with this Skype pop-up. Then go into your Skype settings and set it for automatic updates. That's all.
