Name variations
« on: April 25, 2007, 12:50:58 PM »
Alrighty then... here's a question for the ladies

We don't really have so many nicknames in the west with our names.. David becomes Dave, or god forbid, Davie, and more recently the new inventions of Davidchik, and Demonchik (when I'm lucky).. but Russia names seem to have almost infinite variations..

We all know a few variations of female names... e.g. Elena, Lena, Elenusha, Lenochka,  etc..  perhaps you ladies would tell us ALL of the variations of your names? which are your favorites? Which ones are for friends to call you? which ones are only for your boy?

Why would you want to know about OUR own names? you may never come across a woman named similarly to us.

May be you are interested in some particular names?

Ah HA! Answering my question with a question!!!   ;D  No,  not really anything in particular. After seeing Anastasia's list of many names in her hello thread, I thought it would be interesting to see how many variations there are for the different ladies' names.  I knew there were many, but she had a list that surprised me. I'm guessing (and only guessing) that some would be used by parents, some by friends, and maybe others would be used by boyfriend/husband.  I'd have asked the Russian guys to post as well, but we don't seem to have any...  ;D

Yes I did posted a question on your question.

My reason was that there are not many women here. Thus, it is obvious to me that you will receive a less than representative picture as a result of answering your question directly. That's why I allowed myself to re-ask you.

As a forum member, I assume that if a person posts a question he or she appreciates getting as many replies to the point as possible.

Hope this explains.  :)

Now to the point:

Lilia (as in passport)
Liliya (I hate this Russian bureaucratic version  >:()
Lilya (standard Russian diminutive)
Lilka (actually a Russian standard deteriorative, or a very colloquial Russian version  :) )
Lil (Britts tend to call me this. Actually preferred as it's short)
Lilian (prevalent misspelling of my name abroad)
Lilechka (standard Russian endearing)
Lilichka (actually launched by poet Mayakovsky, in fact an endearment incorrectly spelled)
Lilenchik (Mom calls me this)
Lilon (must be sort of funny French-like  :D invented by one classmate)
Lilusha, Lilush (from some colleagues; sounds quite cozy to me)
Lili (Germans tend to call me this)
Lily (not quite my favorite. Just a flower's name)
Lilchen (from a Russian friend who is fan of German)
Liliaatje (from one Dutch lover)

Those were the adresses to me personally. May be my other name sisters have some more experience  :)

Lilechka and other Russian ladies.  My wife's name isn't on the list that Ken cited so maybe you can help me by providing me with all of the variations of her name and when would be best to use them.  It would be fun to surprise her with a few.  Her name is Ella.

Scott, here are a few from me:

(stressed vocals underlined)

Ellochka - most used

Ellonka - 'n' pronounced softly

Ellusha - in my personal opinion, a female affix '- sha' gives some cozy nuance to the affixed word

There are lots of diminutive and ‘loving’ suffixes that you can add to a name attaching different shade of the meaning to it, and you can even change letters in the name itself.

Yes, would be better if you, guys, give us specific names of your ladies, and we can give you examples. The link above is very good.

Okay, how about Natalia?

Listed on Ken's link were these... NatAsha, NatAshen'ka, Natshechka, NAta, NatUsen'ka, NatUsik, NatAha

Are there others?  Which ones would be considered by a woman to be most endearing and romantic if whispered into her ear?

Ste, good example, but not quite for the name of Natasha. it is more for my name actually - Nastya. So you can say Nastyushka, and there can be two stresses:

Nastyushka  - funny version

Nastyushka - more freindly version

I call Nadia 'Nadyushka'! She call me by her pet name for me, 'Mudak' which she tells me is very affectionate.

 :o  Mudak  :o  :o  ???

This word really means, to put it in a very mild way, 'stupid'

you must be kidding me, or she must be kidding you!  :noidea:

Are you sure it is this word? What is your real name?

LOL!! Suddenly I feel much better about being called her 'porosenok'...

I guess whispering to her "Mudochka" is out of the question.   ;)

Since my name is Brian...  I find it quite hiliarious when way too many people misspell my name, "Brain"...  I'm constantly being called Brain instead of Brian cuz it's easier to pronounce for those people with their lazy tongue!  ::)

Anastassia is one of my favorite Russian feminine name.  That name has so many different really cool derivatives.  Nothing about you, lovely Miss Ash...   :) I just like the name.  If I had a daughter, I'd have that name for her.

Brian, You tihnk you have problems with your name, look up Scott (скот) in your Russian-English dictionary.  I'm sure the ladies would have fun making some derivatives from that.  This is my middle name but I went by it all my life until I moved to Ukraine.  Upon learning its meaning in Russian, I prompltly started using my first name there.

Anastassia is an old Russian name, what comes in mind is Princess Anastassia of course, and for us Russians it reminds of Nast'enka from the cartoon "Alenkiy Tsvetochek" - "A Tale of a Crymson Flower" which is kind of like Beauty and the Beast here.
