Women's petition calls for new bank holiday

08:47am 8th March 2005

A petition signed by thousands of workers calling for International Women's Day to be officially made a bank holiday is to be handed to the Government today.
The 10,000 signature-strong document will urge ministers to show "real commitment" to equality and celebrate women's achievements.

The Transport and General Workers Union said its campaign had won support from workers at Sainsbury's, Nestle, British Airways and other firms across the UK.

Pledges by the Government to make sure workers were paid on bank holidays would help two million women and one million men, the union said.

Diana Holland, the union's national organiser for women, said: "Making International Women's Day a public holiday as recommended by the United Nations is a great way to celebrate women's achievements and to commit ourselves to ending discrimination against women.

"Millions will benefit from Labour's pledge to add bank holidays to annual holidays.
"Women are nearly twice as likely to gain from this change, and part-time workers are four times as likely to gain - a real commitment to equality and justice at work.

"But British workers do have the fewest bank holidays in the European Union and deserve to be brought into line with the rest of Europe.
"Making International Women's Day a public holiday would be a great start."

A giant petition will be handed to Employment Relations Minister Gerry Sutcliffe later today.
A series of events will be held across the country to mark International Women's Day, which is celebrated around the world today.

Again one holliday more... i already work only the half of the year with all the holliday we have... and the child go almost not more to school...

It is right to have a special day for woman but why a official holliday... we have day for opa, day for oma, day for children, day for woman... wait a little... WE HAVE NO DAY FOR MAN... let us fight for have our days... WE WISH THE SAME RIGHT THAT WOMAN... we wish our day, a more early pension, special holliday for stay with children when they are young ...

Elena, so petition is not about the right of woman but more about bad feminist... equality is good but it is need in the two way... in our democratie, woman begin have more right that man...
