Met her at the Moscow airport, SVO, old Terminal 2. I had been in Russia several times on assignment, then had spent time in Kyiv on assignments and was moving to Moscow for a 3 year posting. She was holding a sign with my name misspelled, just prior to me exiting passport control and customs.

She didn't like Americans, especially me after I commented on the misspelling, and it took awhile but as we were working inside the same company she couldn't exactly disappear. 

Since she was working at the same place one of her job responsibilities for the first several weeks was me. She'd knock on my door every morning to escort me to work on the Metro, teach me to get around Moscow and do shopping-banking, etc by myself. I was smitten and she warmed up gradually.
 
It took some time but eventually my charms won out  and I was allowed to meet her family. We did a courtship process (instead of dating) for over a year and the rest as they say is history.

I transacted some business in Ukraine with a man and his firm on several trips.  On one trip I met the man's wife and I was at their apartment several times during some other trips.  Some years later, this man died very prematurely.  I had some infrequent condolence type correspondence with the widow for a couple of years.  On a trip to Ukraine a couple of years ago she came to visit with me in a second city.

She is now living with me in USA and attending University.

I met my Olena on Ukrainedate. I was about to close my profile when she IM'd me. We chatted then took our chats to Skype and the rest is history. Now, I'm hoping to have her with me by December!!!!

I met my wonderful Ani (Anastasia) on EM's almost 2 years ago, we corresponded for almost 6 months before I traveled to Moscow. She then came to Australia several months later on a tourist visa and we Married at that stage, I then returned to Moscow (& St Pete) about 3 months later to be with her through the visa application process. It was approved within 1 month (Temp residence)

 Ani has now been in Australia for 6 months, has secured a good job as a commercial analyst, started driving lessons last week and has met several lovely Russian/Aus and Russian/Russian couples. Going through the process of applying for Perm Res. as we speak.

Have been married now for just over a year - life is wonderful

Personally, I do not believe in romance tour for many reasons - not only because of their prices.

Last year i ordered a car, a GPT Turbo 4 wheels. I win the lottery of the company and so they send by UPS a full package for a tour in Ukraine, with a heater included. Finally i heat the heater so much that she wants to see me again. The story is continuing.

Met mine on freepersonals, wrote for 10 days, began speaking on phone and 3 weeks later met in Istanbul.  Met 5 times since then and 1000 more emails, and we Skype twice/day.  Will see her in Siberia in about 4 weeks, and we will travel back here together (with the dog) and she will stay for a month...her 3rd visit here.  She will also interview for her job as personnel manager, (I'm sure she'll get it) then her new employer will do the immigration paperwork.  During her last months in Russia, she'll learn to drive, rent or sell her flat, and pack clothes, books, etc.  Lots of facetime so far and more to come. 
 
Quite a trip so far and very well worth the effort!

maybe that's true, as there is a stigma to this that people would have a natural reaction to avoid?

My grandmother was Indian, and having lived through times when it was viewed pretty poorly she never mentioned it. I cant fault her for simply avoiding a subject that traditionally wasn't cool for her.
It's easy to sit back and say:
* well she should have simply been open and proud of it!*,
but like the old adage *i dint walk a mile in her shoes* back in the 1920's either to be in a position to judge her for being closed about any subject she felt closed.Everyone handles such things very differently.




As far as the topic here:


If they are asking genuinely, as in friends or open minded people  , I give them the straight answer.A marriage agency in the FSU.Those people generally  find the rest of the story  interesting, and cool.



 
If they are the unknown inqusitive nelly, that's simply asking because they heard the accent and already made some judgement in their head.. which you can hear in the tone of the leading question, then they get the smart ass reply, that I placed an ad , and she came through the mail!! it was awesome!! As its the stereotype most people are actually asking about anyway.I think it makes them reflect on why they actually asked..or they just think i'm an arse. either one is ok by me.
I'm not embarrassed by how we met ,and really don't care what people think.
I also generally don't go around asking couples I don't really know how they met,
unless the scenario or conversation somehow naturally brought the subject up.

Met through a dating site, the profile was one suggested to me by the girl I met in Kiev. Communicated a couple of months (including her not replying for some weeks due to her computer dying and losing most contacts),
