Feb. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Russian and Ukrainian security services foiled a plot to assassinate Vladimir Putin, who faces a presidential election in less than a week, said his spokesman, Dmitry Peskov.
Two militants were detained in Ukraine for planning to murder the premier in Moscow after the March 4 presidential ballot, Russia’s state-run Channel One television said today. It would be “inappropriate” to link the release of information about the plot to the election, Peskov said by phone today.

"Do I understand correctly that no one believes in the assassination attempt on Putin?" Danila Lindele, a leader of the opposition Blue Bucket movement, wrote on Twitter.
Another Russian user wrote: "It's better to pretend we believe it. Or else they'll start blowing up homes again."
Putin's critics allege that a series of apartment block bombings (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/1999/sep/19/russia.theobserver) on the eve of his first election in 2000 were orchestrated by the Kremlin to boost the then unknown politician's popularity, rather than by Chechen rebels, as claimed.
A similar assassination attempt on Putin was allegedly foiled on the day of Russia's last presidential election in March 2008 (http://www.theage.com.au/news/world/russian-agents-foiled-plot-to-assassinate-putin-report/2008/03/15/1205472170874.html).
But Channel One's press service said that those who linked the report to Putin's election campaign were "psychologically unwell".

Maxx,

When this report first appeared, news outlets were reporting no big deal.. Happens all the time and the kremlin were keeping such low key..

Leveraging 'news' can of course be done by all sides.. But in the end is spin..

The news report I saw said the bomb blew up in the apartment. How did  the UA/RUS agents "foil" the plot? Just showing up at the explosion scene?

Trying to not be too obvious with it looking like it is for spin. Why is there always an event before Putin is up for election?
