Travel advice please
« on: January 27, 2019, 11:53:50 PM »
Some taylor made advice please.  I like rolling hills beaches and vistas as in hilly or mountainous terrain .  I also like my beaches not too crowded.  Where in the fsu should I go that's  fairly accessible from airports.  I've for the present had enough of town's although my next visit is to dinipro in Ukraine.   As I live within easy travelling of London airports  and flights are inexpensive I'm fairly flexible.  Obviously for some places I'll need a visa

Well the former Baltic states do not fit your need for mountainous terrain and Belarus is land-locked and not mountainous, either

So, you're left with Ukraine Russia  Georgia

Crimea best fits your needs as Sochi's beaches are mainly stoney - but *I* prefer swimming in the rivers on a hot summers day

Georgia has beaches that are less stoney with the same mountainous backdrops and Maxx could advise

'Abkhazia' has nearly deserted beaches - non recognised Republic that Russia supports .

Crimea would certainly be interesting and I don't often follow UK govs  advice on travel.  I guess you have to get a Russian visa and travel in that way.  Im presuming you don't travel in from Ukraine.

The EASIEST and normally cheapest way is to fly into Moscow and fly to Simferopol ...BUT..

IF the UA authorities know you entered Crimea taking this route - you may be refused entry to Ukraine

They even have a site where people can inform on you - if you do try it

http://dpsu.gov.ua/en/stop_list/

You CAN apply to Kyiv for a permit to enter and prob best to have a current M/entry  RU visa, too

My guess is that most beaches are quite empty - this time of the year - so I would say, anywhere?  :cheesy:

travel to Krim requires a Russian Visa
photo of my visa issued in 2018 (this is a 3 yr multi-entry)
notice Russian passport stamps issued at airport
if you do travel to Krim,
depending on whether or not you stay in a Russian hotel that precisely follows the rules
you COULD end up with such a stamp with a Crimean address
some folks in Ukraine, and on some days more than others may frown upon seeing such a thing
and you may experience some “inconvenience” as a result upon showing it to them
therefor, prudence would dictate that you should make an effort NOT to acquire a Krim stamp
so as to not have to deal with the issue later...
easiest way to accomplish this is to NOT stay in a big fancy Russian Hotel in Krim!

slovo....

beaches will be nearly deserted, but plenty of stuff to gawk at, and there’ll be no one around..

note: GRU/FSB - these images are already in your database, talk to "Igor" about getting access to the "special" files...

So Crimea is better than Odessa?  Im completely  ignorant about such things .  Krim I actually liked your posts on Turkey and some of the things you got up to there.  There was a bit of interest from gov in British people going to either side of the Crimea conflict either as idealists or mercenaries but that seems to have died down.

"So Crimea is better than Odessa?"

NO WAY!!!

Odesa is a HUGE and diverse area, some of EVERYTHING if you know WHERE to look
there's Arcadia, Suvoroksky, and then all the "suburbs"
not sure why you wanna go this time of year, or what kinds of stuff interests you
I guess in Krim you can visit a gazillion historical places without a "lot of other folks around", if you know what I mean, (cough)metal detector(cough)
but you can do that around Odessa to!
advantage of not needing a visa goes to Ukraine of course and Ukraine is credit card friendly unlike Crimea

Sorry maybe I didn't explain properly.  I'm going to Dinipro in February.  I'm researching / buying my flight tickets 6 months early for future trips.  I have noticed that I'm going through Borispol passport check faster as my collection of in out stamps is now 3 of each.  Im flying direct to Dinipro next time as soon as work commitments allow.

"I'm going to Dinipro in February. "

brrrrr, you might be able to ice-skate!
Dnipro isn't that far from Odesa,
OTOH, to go from Dnipro to Krim will be "quite a journey" and likely involve the use of an oxen convoy or Greek Trireme (with you rowing!)

If you go to Crimea and Ukrainian officials learn this, you will be denied entry to Ukraine.

Still waiting to see your Crimean stamp from last summer. I see on your photos a stamp in Moscow. YOU said previously that you get stamp in Crimean stamp in passport.

BTW- There are no big fancy hotels in Crimea. Nice ones, yes.

Could be an errant stamp, or any information he is carrying.

I didn't post they would learn it, just that if they did, they may not admit him to Ukraine.

Ding ding, I didn't get any stamp like that in Yalta. I stayed at nice hotel( I think). I guess YOU ain't going back to Ukraine...… and I'll be there this spring with no worries!! )))

BTW- Thanks for showing your stamp!!

I would have paid a few bucks to NOT get that stamp. I didn't stay long enough to need to register. A stamp would be on the registration slip.

I won't have time to go to Odessa this summer, too many other plans, maybe next summer...
will rent an apartment overlooking the beach, and rent a boat as well
and maybe two escorts this time who are required to be naked on the boat at all times....
and that's just at the beginning of my next sabbatical....

Its kind comparing apples to oranges.

You had specific requests, mountainous, etc

Crimea better fits that bill.

Before the takeover by Russia,
Crimea was very much a big vacation  destination  for Ukrainians for those not already living on the peninsula.

The geography is much like the Greek or Italian coasts .
Beaches range from rock to round stone, to  pebbles or to sand in various locations around the peninsula.

Yalta beaches could be crowded
In the past,  as it was a resort city for many nationalities,  and yes particularly Russians.
I haven't been since the political change, so I'm not sure if it's as popular as prior.

In any case there were plenty if beaches in krim that you could have breathing room if you looked back when so I'm positive that part hasn't changed .
