Russia has reportedly blocked 2 million IPs in Amazon’s cloud and another million over Google’s way.


All this, and Telegram reportedly still works for most users. Other services are not working well, though. There are many other services hosting content on these servers, which are no longer accessible in Russia. For example, Russian users are complaining the group management service Trello and the game GuildWars 2 are both down.

As of yesterday morningTelegram"s website was down  and megafon and yota had blocked the messenger app.

In the afternoon Telegram was working again on all mobile networks

The Kremlin would say this is to combat terrorism.

To be fair, since VVP came to power perhaps 3000 Russian citizens have lost their lives to terrorism.

I reckon that figure is low. I am not convinced that some 'accidents' were  actually also 'terakts'

This isn't much different from the way some social media is treated in China. China regularly blocks social media and literally forbids certain discussions on social media. As in Russia there is no recourse to the local court systems since those are run by the government.

Telegram still works for mesagaging - but today it would not work for voice / video calls and umpteen million Google / Amazon IPs were blocked - as the media regulator decided Telegram uses these IPs to route


Our Russian friends suggested trying Google Duo - which on end to end fibre connections was THE best quality video I've ever seen - few pixilations - but sometimes  MY audio could be heard coming back at me (
