He thinks my movies are crap
« on: January 02, 2006, 07:23:28 PM »
My stepson says that the movie I bought myself is crap.

He just rented, "American Pie, Band Camp" and thinks it is the height of sophistication.

My movie, "Casablanca" with the unknown actors, Humphry Bogart and Ingrid Bergman is pure trash.

This was so funny I had to post the story.

How do you deal with this 14 year old mentality?

SoC,

As soon at the word "teen" appears in their age the brain shuts  down completely. Don't even try to deal with it or explain it. The  synapses will start to fire again about age 25. Until then let him have  his high class entertainment and you just enjoy watching those crappy  movies with the no name actors!

Clyde,

Ken is right on the mark.  Having raised two kids into adulthood, I can tell you that no matter how well you raise kids, they all turn into azzholes on their 13th birthday.  At that time their parents turn into blooming idiots and every friend they have is waaay smarter.  The other "blips" on the march to adulthood come at 16 (driving age) and at 18 (legal adulthood in most states).  Prepare yourself.  It is a very long haul.

SoC,

If this is any consolation, I kinda liked American pie and the 2 sequals. It was like, wow dude. Haven't heard of Band camp. Ken did hit it. Get used to being consider a dinosaur and half dead. When I was 16, 30 seemed  like it was one foot in the grave. Keep pumpin those classics though. On a rainy day he might just get bored and watch one. One other thing. With my older boys, I never stopped preaching morals and right and wrong. They need to hear it. If their ears don't hear it,  it never gets to the  brain. You may not see the fruit for several years but you still have to plant the seeds.

Has he seen your copy if 'Shaving Ryan's Privates' yet Clyde! Or 'Pretty shîtty Gang Bang'!??

I had a list of these porn movies with titles to sound like the latest non-porn movie release, wish I could find it........

'Sheepless in Seattle' was another....

My now 15 yo daughter refuses to watch a Black and White film at all! I forced her to watch '12 Angry Men' about 5 years ago - she described it as 'having no colours....' - still, school forced her to watch 'Schilndler's List' for History class....

Top of my viewing list at the moment is 'Wallace and Gromit'!

"Edward Penishands" - another one!

Ste

Got these off the net....

Forrest Hump
Pulp Friction
Romancing the Bone
Snow White and the Seven Sailors
Buffy the Vampire Layer
Teenage Mutant Ninja Dildoes
Rambone
Monty's Python and the Holey Girl
E-Three:  The Extra Testicle

Ste,

I think I will take my classics (he may enjoy Rebel Without a Cause) and rename them for his enjoyment.

BTW, he says in Ukraine he can watch whatever he pleases (no PG-13 or R ratings).

He also said that children of any age can go into a liquor store and buy booze.

I tend to believe he is not lying.

Probably that is part of the reason there are so many alcholics.   Start them of before they have any common sense and by the time they are old enough to have a brain, it is fried.

Perhaps some of the swashbuckling movies would peak his interest. Or the Sinbad movies maybe. Something a little off beat with some action. Just a thought.

I know thast when Lena first arrived, she enjoyed slapstick comedies most.  Lots of physical humor and no translations needed.  Her first movie in a theater here was "American Pie."  She was apalled by the way Americans dressed and ate in the theater, but loved the movie.

We went a pantomine just before Christmas and Nadia was similarly disgusted at the mess folks leave on the seats, floor, anywhere other than take it home.

I was ashamed.

I wouldn't worry about his present taste in movies.  He is being a normal teenager, Russian, American or otherwise.  I raised my ex-AW's two children to adulthood, so been there, done that.

As for the theater, yes, at the movies, Americans are a bunch of pigs.

BTW I found out from my present RW correspondent that a movie theater there is called a cinema, not a theater.

As there are so called here in UK too!

Or:

Pictures, more commonly, or 'the flicks'.

Actually isn't the Russian 'kinoteatre' ie 'Movietheatre'?

Son of Clyde,

I am helping with raising my wife's now 14 yo daughter, been in USA almost 2 years. I have raised a previous stepdaughter and my own daughter so this stepdaughter wonders how I know so much about what she will do next. I told her you make number 3 teenage girl I am raising so I know before you do what you will do. The good thing is her mother and I are one person and think alike when it comes to dealing with her daughter. She does try us at times but I use the carrot and stick approach you want to go some where or do something then you have to listen, no listen, no go or no do. My wife usually has me make most of the decisions when it come to her daughter and then backs me up when I do.

As for movies, she has her own TV in her room so I do not her much about movies, but she likes some stuff I do like Sci-fi, cop shows, etc. and we watch it togetherShe likes to hang with me when I go shopping at the grocery store etc. She did not hear or see her father very much while she was in Ukraine. So I am a sub for him.

you can PM me if you like.

Now that you mention that, my RW correspondent is learning English from a teacher who learned her Engliosh in the UK, so that is probably why.

You ignore it...he will... or will not... discover the classics on his own....besides BandCamp may just become his classic in 40 years...;-) pity the thought.

For the record.....I laughed at all the American Pie movies...

If you can play it for her ...you can play it for me....Now play it!...

I purchased "East of Eden" and "Rebel Without a Cause" I seem to think my son will be able to relate to James Dean. I like these two classics very much.

I have always been into collecting things so I want to own as many of my favorite "classic" movies as I can afford. Turner Classic movies may show them but why wait? Why have to tolerate the commercials if they are shown on network television?

I may watch "Casablanca" 50 times so I will never have to go to Blockbuster to rent it or see it on a commercial television station

My wanting to collect things like books, cd's, records and cassettes really surprises them. Anyone interested in 3,000 lp's? They are gathering dust in my basement. I collected them between the late 1960's through the late 1980's when I purchased a cd player.

About a year and a half ago I took a truckload (the bed of my pickup was completely full) of LPs to GoodWill. I kept 5 or 6 that I know I'll never see again in any format.

SoC,

Have you got any Russian movies that they can turn you on to? We just watched Pobeg (I think that's what it was called) about a doctor accused of a crime. Good movie and it helps my Russian too!

SOC,

Just for the record, I wouldn't care much for your taste in movies either and I am a lot closer to your age than 14.  So I wouldn't be too hard on your stepson.  I do think there are some movies that are intergral to our culture that are "must sees" for the foreign born.  Movies like: Wizard of Oz, The Graduate, Gone with the Wind, The Carpetbaggers, 12 Angry Men, Rocky Horror Picture Show.  How else are you going to explain a nation fearful of flying monkeys?

And not movies like:

The Hunt for Red october (dodgy Russian Navy)
The sum of all fears (Baltimore nuked - bonus)
K-19 (makes russian navy look stupid)
Red Heat (hilarious!)
Birthday Girl (unrealistically easy to get MOB)

Ste,

You tweaked another cell in my brain (proving that I have at least two!).  Has anyone else been uncomfortable in a theater with their Russian wife because the plot of the movie is so slanted against Russians?  There was a time when almost every international "bad guy" was Russian.  Today it seems that the Arabs have taken their place.

I usually get told about the bad subtitles for the Russian bits and comments like 'he's not russian' when it's probably someone trying to do the accent.

She got the two guys in Birthday Girl wrong tho - Nad' thought they were Russian, they're French I think!

Sean Connery's attempts at Russian in the beginning of The Hunt for Red October are unintelligable tho - max funny!!

Nadia also cheered loudly when Baltimore was nuked in aforesaid The Sum of All Fears. Sorry Clyde.....

Good movies tho are Moscow on the Hudson, I liked it, Nadia hated it. And 2010, CCCP to the rescue. The Russian cosmonaut in Armeggedon gets my vote too, although possibly he;s not russian. He saved the movie if not the World. That was Bruce Willis. Again. The bit where Ben Affleck says to him 'I love you man" at the end - YUKKKK!!!

Didn't Rocky beat up a Russian boxer in Rocky 14?

And met his future exwife too.  (Bredgett Neilson)  There was a very funny "B" movie made about an American baseball manager that was hired by the USSR to teach baseball to their Russian basball team being formed for international compitition.  Predictable, but entertaining none the less.  It starred Joe Montega.

Elena has noted that on several occasions. Something like, "Of course the bad guy is Russian" The first couple of time it kind of upset her and we talked about the age of the movies and at that time and for many years afterward there was left over animosity and it was easy to use the tried and true method of showing who was the bad guy in the movie.

I kinda liked the Russian bad guy in XXX. Those looked like some great parties! :D

Wasn't there a Smokey and the Bandit movie with Paul Williams and some big guy wearing goofy cowboy suits chasing some Arabs? I think my son would like that one. He rented the Dukes of Hazzard movie last week. From Russia With Love would be a movie not to rent.
