Cleaning up Kharkov

I don't mean cleaning up politics or government. I mean actual cleaning.

Just some enjoyable images taken during the cleaning day in Kharkov, Ukraine. I am pretty sure you'd be happy to see such street cleaners every day. The result of their work is not even of great importance. That's the communal services we deserve!

I've seen the city's name spelled at least three different ways in English.  That reminds me of the days when Muammar Khaddafi ruled Libya. It seems that every few years the media would switch up the spelling of his last name. One year it would start with a "K", the next year it would start with a "Q", the next with a "G".

Western media always face a problem when transliterating a non-Latin alphabet, some trying to adapt a foreign word to the local pronunciation (e.g. Krushev became Khrouchtchev in French newspapers), others trying to maintain more or less the original sounds.

Muʿammar Muḥammad Abū Minyar ʿAbd al-Salām al-Qadhdhāfī's case is an example: in Arabic it written as القذافي, and ق is properly rendered as Q (guttural K sound in Literary Arabic, but pronounced G in Lybia and Egypt). The double ذ, shown here as DHDH, is more similar to a voiced TH (as in that) in English. Therefore, a more accurate transliteration would be Gaththaafii ;).

It just occurred to me that these girls wearing orange while cleaning public places look A LOT better than the people here who clean public spaces while wearing orange (they are prisoners from jails).

I find this thread to be very sexist and chauvinist.  And please don't post some photos of some AW from jail or wherever cleaning up as a comparison, because then we will need to label you misogynist as well.

Are you be able to appreciate the ladies' beauty when doing a handstand on your skateboard?

Are you able to impress them?

Circular brooms don't seem very efficient....but I suppose it's not really so much about the cleaning.  :)

Anathema found the following account of how this cleanup came to be:

Quote
August 18 is a kind of a big deal in Khrakov, Ukraine, there was a really massive festival of cleaning held there on Saturday. Tens of thousands of Ukrainians went out on streets of Kharkov just so they could clean up the city for free. You ask why would people clean their city for free? Well it was because this was just a day before the Day of liberation of Kharkov. It’s a day when casualties of ww2 are remembered and it is a important day for Khrakov (sic) citizens so they clean their free city and enjoy themselves. Thanks to the local curious photographers we have a chance to see how the cleaning looked like and you might find something unusual here. But we’ll let you be the judge after you view the photos via dozor.

I'm sorry, but that is NOT the correct way to wear hi-vis vests.  I'm quite happy (as an accredited instructor in this process) to assist these poor ignorant ladies in how to correctly attire themselves.  8)

I missed this the first time I saw the post.  Check the young boy out in the background of the second picture.  He seems to be enjoying himself.
