Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the comments on my new avatar.  Toma is 13 months now and growing like a rag weed.  Here is another photo of her taken the same day in my sisters conservatory -

For all the Daddy's out there with growing daughters, you can pre-screen who sees them:

Application for Permission to Date my Daughter

Also the purchase of a new shotgun and a new shovel is also advised.  Keeps any would-be suitors 'honest!'

I would have loved to have acquired a sweet little daughter in the process,,, but alas,,, all I got was a couple of hairy legged sons.  Fortunately they are smart enough and bright enough that I still get to have some bragging rights.

It could be worse.

She is just beautiful, Dan.  She looks like you in the first photo and Olya in the second one.  My little "snowflake" turned 30 last week.  I spoke to her for along time about how precious she is to me reminiscing about her birth, the early years (like the stage your daughter is in now) and  how many times during her young life that she made me so proud to be her Dad.  By the end of the conversation, she was crying pretty hard and Dad was a bit misty eyed too.  Enjoy these years, Dan, because in a blink of an eye, she will be 30 like mine!
Thanks for sharing.

Speaking of children, do you guys favor giving Russian or English names to your kids? I'm thinking of a compromise of 1 Russian and English each on any future kids. ;D

We clearly settled on a Russian name (Ekaterina).

And Olya has done a PHENOMENAL job of teaching her Russian language (just as an aside). She moves fluidly back-and-forth between English and Russian - and even acts as interpreter for her older siblings. Pretty cute to watch.

Congrats on your snowflake Dan, very pretty kid. I like the Russian names for girls, though I'm not too sure about Russian names for boys. Well done to your Olya for teaching your daughter Russian, demand for Russian speakers is rising in the business world esp. in the oil and mineral sectors. Being bilingual would definitely be a plus in the future job world apart from the kids being able to communicate with their grandparents and family back home.

I did some work on hand-held voice recognition devices and learned a lot working with the linguists.  Our brains pattern sounds that we hear beginning before birth and cease storing those patterns about 6 or 7 years of age.  Children that are not taught another language but that are exposed to it, i.e. hear it on a regular basis, are able to pick up that language extremely quickly and easily later as adults.

This early pattern imprinting is the reason that Japanese have such difficulty with the "L" in English.  They never hear the sound as youngsters, and the sound never patterns in the brain, hence it's difficult to match later.  Same thing happens to all of us.  Sounds that another language have that we don't hear and pattern when we were very young are difficult to re-create later on.

My oldest son and his wife have regularly spoke Spanish and English with their kids since birth and now my grand kids can carry on a conversation switching between English and Spanish several times in the same sentence!  And all without a discernible accent.

My dad didn't begin learning English until he entered school, 7 years old, 1st grade in northern Montana.  His speech is noticeably different from my aunts and uncles who are younger than he is.

Thank you very much, guys! His features are still evolving too, but definitely dad's hair color and mom's structure.  :) But, can you believe I was as blond as him when i was a little girl?

Dan, your little daughter is just absolutely gorgeous, little blond princess! ...and an angel.  :)
