I bought a "Free-to-Air" receiver from ebay for around $30, added a better antenna, I get all the Houston Channels
just plug in the back of the TV with all the other boxes
I will use this next year to check the status of the "Food Riots" when they hit Houston and watch for when they head North
then the Neighborhood Watch goes into DefCon 3
I like Rembrandt's "The Night Watch"
we bad...

I have similar situation...low data cap, speed sometimes to slow for streaming.

Have you considered something like this;
BASIC FREE TO AIR SYSTEM - No Contract to Sign! - No Monthly Fee for the Programming!

http://www.rickssatelliteusa.com/rickssatellitesatellitesystems.htm

I am considering this system...http://www.rickssatelliteusa.com/globalstarsys400.htm

Why would you consider buying a motorised system for FTA ?

Motorised systems are a maintenance nightmare..

FAR better to get multiple fixed dishes if you want to point at a few 'birds' ..

I imported and installed thousands of systems and TV / data uplinks in the noughties in the E.Med ... Dishes bigger than houses sometimes ..  I refused to sell motorised in the end (

Most just set on Galaxy19 and leave it, but occasionally it is fun to play around and see what all you can get. Or something they want to watch is on another bird. Almost all hobbyist dishes in US are motorized.  Also many are the 30-48 inch ones, not the BUDS.

ML,

Wifey and I were in remote part of New Mexico at health spa.    We drove to higher elevation to watch an incredible sunset (enhanced by air particulates from  CA wildfires).

We stayed afterwards for the "cosmos" show.  While waiting for the stars and galaxies, I streamed a MLB game and the wife watched some Russian music thingy.  No cable.  No satellite.

Had we brought our computer, we could have hooked up to a larger screen, following the notes my son gave me on how to connect.

Should have brought a dessert to share in the desert.    For us Florida people, it gets dark and cool fast in the high desert.

I think maybe by now ML's motivation to watch anything 'Chernobyl' had been diminished by the confusion arising from cable/satellite/WIFi/SmartTV, etc..

Actually, now I don't want to watch after reading reviews.

Many claim it is simply propaganda financed by fossil fuel industry to discourage the use of nuclear energy.

And, Krimster mentioned high suicide rate after viewing.

Let's try this another way, do you have a smart TV (it's a yes or no question)? You presumably have internet because you are posting here. Have you heard of streaming? You can hook a smart TV up to your wifi and viola' you have cable at your fingertips with no cable connection or a satellite dish. Yes, it is that easy

I hate to belabor this further, but

Without cable or satellite . . . what do you suppose would be feeding any wifi ??

And, would this something feeding wifi (not cable or satellite), be capable of streaming anything ??

ML-

Unless your computer is hooked up through the ol' dial-up modem to connect to the internet and post on RWD, you likely have WIFI. This is not the same as cable or satellite subscription services.

Of course you didn't use cable or satellite.

But you seem unaware of what was feeding your smart phone.

There's a way to get video from the smart phone to a smart tv or computer to watch on larger screens.

Again, I know hard to comprehend . . . but I have a flip phone which is powered by TracFone for $6.66 a month . . . for phone usage only, and I don't even use it except when away from home to call wife to tell when I will be coming back, etc., and for emergency use (hope not) for auto breakdowns, etc.  I haven't even made any phone calls for past 3 months or so due to health problems and now the lockdowns.

I  also two antennas in my attic, one pointing north the other south.

This allows us to get all the standard broadcast channels plus PBS and a few independents that broadcast 50 year old movies.

But it doesn't pick up anything like HBO, Netflix or anything that goes out via cable or satellite.

And, I have added a Channel Master box that allows for recording of two channels at same time.  Have an add on 2 GB hard drive, so have a hundred hours or so of things recorded for later watching.

Yes or no questions
Do you have a smart TV in your home?

Do you have wifi in your home?

If the answer to these two questions are yes, then you have the ability to watch what is referred to as "streaming television". It is better than cable as in you can buy only what you wish without having to buy a lot of crap you don't.

Your smart TV once it is online via your wifi has preset links already programmed into it that allows you to try (most 30 days free trial) the 1000's of streaming services available. You can buy individual channels, networks or entire cable systems. You can buy just movies, or sports, news, porn, whatever it is you want to watch. Either by the program or for certain periods of time.

Now that I have told much more than necessary, let me repeat . . . I cannot get anything that needs to be streamed from anywhere as I don't have cable, satellite, or high speed internet from my phone line.

This is my choice, and has nothing to do with cost.

Long ago I rejected the idea of signing up for cable (this was when it was available at my previous homes) because it was well known that we watch FAR TOO MUCH television which I didn't want to subject my children to.

Currently, there is no cable available in my development.

And, those who do have satellite in this area are extremely unhappy with ANY of the various service providers.

And I won't be buying a smart phone or smart phone service to make 3-4 phone calls per month.

Long distance phone calls throughout USA and to Canada are available for free via google email account, and probably several other sources.

Wife can talk with all relatives back home via Skype which works fine from our slow speed phone internet connection.

ML-

You need not have cable or satellite to have 'relatively' high speed internet access, albeit likely limited if compared to cable or especially Fios. Digital Subscriber Line, or better known as DSL, runs through your telephone line. If you're connecting to the internet, you should have DSL available even in the 'Land of the Tasadays' where you apparently are.

Likely a quick phone call to your telephone service provider you'll be able to ask what DSL speeds are available in your area.

But if these are too cumbersome to pursue, or too much to deal with our collective annoying ignorance of your situation, and if the motivation to watch a great Chernobyl movie/documentary is still intact, may I suggest this option instead?

I cut the cord to cable about 8 years ago. I tired of the constant increases and having to call them every month. At the time I had a DSL with 7mbps for internet use only. It worked and streamed with 7mbps albeit quite aggravating. That was all that was available in my area at the time. Actually most every cable program was available on the net but you had to find it. Finding it sometimes was a/the issue. At the time Ruku was a fairly new concept but I got one and it worked fine with 7 mbps. As soon as I moved and could upgrade speeds, I did. I have cable internet only now because of the 150 mbps speed but still stream. It is really the way to go, for me anyways.

Yeah, these are constantly evolving, FP. Remember when the first digital camera came out when it was 3MB and was advertised as the end-all best picture you can ever get, just like the ol' 1080 p Hi-Def? Now these things are literally obsolete. 4K/UHD was the hottest thing going until 8K is introduced.

Hell, Blu-Ray is ho-hum now that you have live streaming...

Same thing with Broadband/FioS, etc...I remember winning a Vizio 45" LCD TV in a raffle in one of our golf tourney. It cost $2k+ at the time, now it’s likely obsolete. I already had a 60" plasma, which is also obsolete now, and so I put the TV in a spare bedroom in our old home. It's still there and hopefully our tenant have some use for it. Serves the purpose I suppose but neither one compares to the latest tech available.

That's a good idea. In the quest to watch Chernobyl, you have just prevented a meltdown(no pun intended). If ML can get his wife what she wants, she will love him long time.

Lawrd knows, I'm always glad to be of help...

As we got a direct deposit for Stimulus (or whatever it was) money, didn't get to see Donald's name on a check.

But today, we got personal letter from Donald telling that the money was direct deposited for us.

I am sure we were part of a very small, select group that got these personal letters.

Previously we had gotten personal letters from Melania and Ivanka.  Sure they were asking for contributions, but I think we were highly thought of anyway.

Based on this series of personal letters we are getting, I think a job offer in Donald's second term is a sure thing.

But don't know if I will have the time, even as they say no one can turn down a request from the president to serve our country.

That’s awesome ML! Lucky guy.

TBH, and I don’t know if I should share this, but I got an invitation to have coffee with Ivanka myself not too long ago. As I know what this seemingly innocent invitation for coffee often leads to, being married I knew I couldn’t and shouldn’t. So I had to turn her down. No regrets man.

I can only hope I didn’t break her down too bad and she was able to move on.

Wife can talk with all relatives back home via Skype which works fine from our slow speed phone internet connection.

Hi ML,

I assume from the above post that you have a DSL internet connection?  Which phone company?

Depending on your DSL line speed, you may be able to stream content.

Here's an article from http://itstillworks.com/dsl-good-streaming-32499.html :

Quote
Using a DSL connection, you may be able to stream video, but the clarity of the video will depend on your network speed. Hulu, a popular video streaming website, recommends that you use connections with a minimum download speed of 1.5 Mbps. Netflix requires that you have a minimum speed of .5 Mbps but also recommends 1.5 Mbps. If you are streaming HD video, Netflix recommends a download speed of 5.0 Mbps. Under those guidelines, a DSL connection would be fast enough to stream video with reasonable quality, assuming that you are getting optimal performance from your phone line and equipment. However, if you want a high-quality streaming experience, a faster cable connection is a better choice.

To watch, use your computer or hook your computer to a TV that has a video in or HDML port, or...a smart tv...
