Another fine piece by Elgar:

However, his most famous piece is:

Particularly after 7'35". When I lived in London in 1971, after the last film show this bit accompanied a clip showing the Queen trooping the colour, at which everybody in the audience rose as a sign of respect, then left the theatre.

I have always wondered why Britain produced so very few notable composers before and after Henry Purcell (1659–1695) ::).

Some might consider G. F. Handel (1685-1759) English. I think the fine arts sometimes move in different speeds.

There were many great musicians in the 18th century, but relatively few writers. England again produced interesting musicians at the end of the 19th and first half the 20th century, E. Elgar, Vaughan Williams and B. Britten

Than in the post war period there was the Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who . . . . and on and on.

On the other side of the coin is Sir J. Tavener

This one is for all the BBoyz out there! Enjoy life!

An awesome JESSE COOK cover of Dylan's classic..

IT AIN'T ME BABE!

Vocals by Melissa MccLelland

Go 'way from my window. Leave at your own chosen speed
I'm not the one you want, babe. I'm not the one you need
You say you're lookin' for someone, who's never weak but always strong
To protect you an' defend you whether you are right or wrong
Someone to open each and every door, But it ain't me, babe
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe. It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe.

Go lightly from the ledge, babe. Go lightly on the ground
I'm not the one you want, babe. I will only let you down
You say you're lookin' for someone, who will promise never to part
Someone to close his eyes for you, someone to close his heart
Someone who will die for you an' more, but it ain't me, babe
No, no, no, it ain't me babe, it ain't me you're lookin' for, babe.

Go melt back in the night. Everything inside is made of stone
There's nothing in here moving, an' anyway I'm not alone
You say you're looking for someone, who'll pick you up each time you fall
To gather flowers constantly, an' to come each time you call
A lover for your life an' nothing more, but it ain't me, babe
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe. It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe.

Wifey and I never miss Jesse perform here in LA. One of her most favorite artist. Mine, too.

Believe or not, MIL was such a trooper when she went to Arroyo Seco music festival with us this past summer. She was so glad to finally put a face, and see Robert Plant perform live, after living all those years listening to Papa play Led Zeppelin's music while rocking his air guitar over and over again in secrecy as apparently western music was forbidden in USSR back in the days...

Speaking of Robert Plant/Led Zeppelin..

Randy California of the '70s band named 'SPIRIT' initially sued LedZep for claims that they stole the riffs to *Stairway To Heaven*. A few years ago, the ruling went against Randy's estate. However, last Friday the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ordered to re-open this case again.

Plant/Page possibly faces millions of dollars in damages if this time the ruling works against them this time.

Here's Randy's 'Taurus', the song that which alleges the charge of plagiarism...the chord progression sounds eerily similar right at the 1:40 mark. Spirit headlined for with LedZep back in the days...

A GREAT WALTZ
« Reply #1634 on: November 01, 2018, 03:54:10 PM »
A GREAT WALTZ

Dmitri Shostakovich's (1906–1975) music is often atonal, but occasionally he also composed some beautiful tonal pieces like The Second Waltz, Op. 99 for the soundtrack of The First Echelon, a 1955 Soviet feature film directed by Mikhail Kalatozov. However, the piece gained world-wide notoriety when included in Luchino Visconti's 1963 film Il Gattopardo (The Leopard) for his grand ball scene with a host of then or later famous actors:

The waltz was also used by Stanley Kubrick in his 1999 Eyes Wide Shut. The above clip is actually a mix of scenes from different movies.

Can you dance the waltz, and do its renversé (anti-clockwise turn) ;D?

"we'll meet again" I believe was used in Kubrick Film "Dr Strangelove", my father actually mentioned this song to me
and Edith Piaf (sp?)
lucky SOB, frostbite followed by gangrene kept him off the front after the Bulge
my father spoke Yiddish fluently, and learned to speak fluent German in two weeks (I kid you not!)
interpreters were in short supply, he got attached to Army GQ interrogating Nazi prisoners from Jan 45 until April 45
was transferred to London to write a long intelligence assessment
when VE Day happened
Dad spent the evening pub crawling with some Wrens, he never told me what happened, but I can guess...

Yes it was, in the final scene:

I could find no reference to Edith Piaf singing it.

Wifey and I recently saw Bohemian Rhapsody and it sparked a lot of memories for both us. Queen was one of my wife’s all time fav band, and as for me, well, I’ve always regarded Freddy Mercury as one of the very best rock and roll vocalist ever.

Lots of great songs and certainly lots of awesome tunes. So as a tribute to Freddy, I’d like post the very last song he recorded before he left. He was recording this song in the studio and it wasn’t finished yet when he tire. He decided to go home with the intent of finishing the vocals another day.

He never made it back....

You can hear guitarist Brian finishing the last verse of

Mother Love

Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.2 op.44 in G major

I particularly like its 3rd movement Allegro con fuoco - starting at about 33' above - for its brilliant gaiety and melodic simplicity (a B-E-G-B-D scale of semiquavers).

This movement is in the form of a Rondo, as most classical symphonies and concertos last movements are. As the name implies, it is a circular alternation of 3-4 themes in a pattern like A-B-A'-C-A''-D-A''', the A being the above melody.

BTW, for those who might intend to start wandering into the incredibly beautiful world of classical music, I suggest to start with Russian composers like Tchaikovski and Rimski-Korsakoff, as I did 60+ years ago :D.

We'll be hosting a few friends at the Staples next week to pay respect and celebrate a great artist and human being on his 'Farewell Tour', Mr. Reginald Kenneth Dwight. From that Troubadour night to generational trip...

There will be Mona Lisa and her madhatters, a madman across the water, a tiny dancer with an island girl accompanied by a rocketman. And of course, Nikita...

Thank you, Sir Elton Hercules John, for a lifetime of music that still spring moments in time.

I always thought this was a US Civil War song.

Well, it turns out it originally was an Irish song, some 100 years earlier :D:

Why do you think so man Americans come to Ireland ?

They are searching for heritage ?))

Seriously, though..... great melodies have been copied by the US for years ...!

2/ Britain's Mary Hopkin wins Eurovision with "those were the days"...produced by Paul McCartney, copyrighted by US writer Gene Raskin  - he copyrighted his English Lyrics and the music - which was actually written by Boris Fomin as  "Dorogoi dlinnoyu" -Дорогой длинною" -  "By the long road"..

I have fond memories of being in Cyprus in 2003 at a dinner party and I was asked to sing a well known British song amongst the company of FSU folk

I only got out a few words of "Those Were the Days" before met with a combination of laughter and outrage !!

I was informed it was an ancient 'Russian Gypsy song' and that the British were 'thieves' )))

Anyway, from arguably one of the very few sexiest man that ever existed ( other than me of course), with a voice to match. Here’s  one of his song that is a great fit for current situation in the US today....
