It's funny as I was on LinkedIn the other day and there was a post on there. Somewhere in the US, this person was complaining that locally most of the local self employed tradesmen businesses seem to have been bought out to create one large company. That new large company now was largely dominating the market. Where before you could just call out the plumber to put in a new tap now the new company wouldn't do that. They would want the customer to subscribe to a maintenance plan that would cover plumbing, electrics etc for a monthly fee - So the customer is left paying a quite steep monthly fee.

So I thought of what you have been saying Krim about working for yourself, but instead of things going that way in this instance they were going the other way. I assume the company made these tradesmen a good offer, not having to do their own accounts, advertising, etc and I guess at least somewhat similar money or greater in salary to the profit they earned after costs. I wouldn't know exactly but guessing something along those lines. In this case it looks like the company gets the customer to pay a lot more and more consistently by monopolising the market then they cream their profit of the top I would imagine.

That aside of course what is the realistic outlook for people actually breaking away from big organisations & companies and instead working for themselves successfully and with satisfaction?

What is the reality for most people that go self employed, and what are the problems that crop up?

Varies but I would say that self employed/small businesses face 2 often interconnected threats from larger businesses:

1). The larger businesses often seek to monopolise the market as far as possible. Thereby squeezing small businesses out.

2). The larger businesses often seek to create an 'umbrella organisation' which cover many related areas for convenience.

Number 2 relates into number 1 of course. Then of course there may potentially be economies of scale or as in the example above dominance gained over the local market which is then leveraged to concentrate power to the hands of the larger business.

I think in your case Olga it sounds like thd guy is having two forms of self employment on the go to spread the risk of any slack emerging in either business as can happen when self employed. They will be the large chains of gyms with many personal trainers in them so he likely knows he will only get so much work. He is likely aiming at customers that want a more quiet time that is more specialised on them.

My guess is that while it may pat having one customer in at a time probably isn't the most lucrative way though it may be hard to compete with the chain gyms on that one. Potentially he may be running a hobby business (no offence meant in that) which while professional will likely be more because he is into it than anything else.

For most taking the risk of doing your own gym and hoping it flies probably would be something people not wanting to sink a lot of money into it would want to do. Not unless they saw a good return. It can be possible to operate with big businesses in the market but not always easy I think.

I think what you say about your friend is telling, some women create too many tickets boxes. I would say keep ticking boxes to a minimum and try to avoid them. Having a tick box list can just put too many barriers in the way to what is a human connection thing.

Dan has sort of a nieche training business because he actually has a degree in physical therapy and he advertises himself as a specialized trainer for people over 45.
He takes some clients who are very weak and almost not mobile and makes muscular fit people out of them I have seen some results, it's amazng.
He makes people buy at least 36 session package at the time and he has quite a few clients.

As far as contracting goes my husband and I got an estimate form him for painting outside of our house and it was WAY too much so we didn't hire him.
But he does seem to have jobs all the time though.

Well last week has been a busy one for me but among the news in my week last week was that the company I work for was changing to an Employee Owned Trust :

Essentially the owners are getting on and there is no family succession plan, I guess no immediate family around they wish to or are around that they can pass the business onto. Essentially, 'there is little point in shed loads more money in retirement when they probably are happy with the shed loads of money they already have' and as the saying goes that you can't take it with you when you pass on. So I guess they thought why not just create an Employee Owned Company (Trust) and so the Employees that do the work benefit from their work. The idea being is that any profit not reinvested is shared out to Employees who currently work for the Company. The Employee Trust of course then running the company instead of it's previous owners.

A nice and funny coincidence as I only recently mentioned the John Lewis Partnership that is run on a similar basis.

So possibly good for me, I don't think I will get a lot of money from an Employee Dividend but anything is better than nothing and it will be interesting to see how much.

So could this Employee Owned Trust Company model be the way forward in tackling those areas where being self employed is difficult in certain sectors of the industry? I think it could be. However to date few Companies exist on this basis. It has been sold time since the John Lewis Partnership was created and there hasn't been a lot of companies following it's path.

Potentially either a trend for such thinking might help it become so or some soft intervention by the government to guide industry that way. I personally think a more softer and gentler approach in the form of Employee Owned Trusts might be the way forward for Socialism as opposed to the often violent upheavals of 20th Century attempts at Socialism and the often subsequent let down of a created system that didn't quite deliver for the working people as hoped.

Essentially whatever society is created people need to be productive to make that society work. So people have to go to work whatever so then it's just a question of under which terms?

I personally think a gradual evolution of society to Employee Owned Trust and Self Employment could be a viable and effective way forward. If people got behind such an economic model it could work and potentially for the most part not let people down. A form of Socialism could be achieved that workers could be happy and content with and over time the few big people holding big money and welding great power at the top could die off. Wealth could once again be more evenly shared out. I think this is a plausible way forward for society and the rest will hopefully follow evolving society into a better place over time.

Something along those lines crossed my mind, essentially it can either be straight up or a deceitful business concoction.

I looked up the company on Companies House on the Government website. The 2022 accounts, the last filing seems to show healthy profit in the many millions. At the moment details have not been released and no money has been requested if Employees. I will follow this along and see how it goes but be mindful that it could be either of the above. I think potentially they might be straight up about it and that is where I see it at this moment in time. John Lewis did it although apparently he later wanted the company back but couldn't get it back lol. Just as well as it's proven it's a potentially viable model to use an Employee Ownership Trust.

I think despite all the carry on and deceit of some people there are potentially good people out there who can see through the theatre of life and to the practical notions of trying to improve society while they are here. If this is straight up as I think it could be I think it's a potentially worthwhile endeavour by the company.
