2018 Winter Olympics South Korea
« on: February 09, 2018, 09:47:49 PM »
  Opening ceremony was great.
Better than Sochi as I remember.
How much did they spend on all this Olympic stuff in comparison?

Only seen the highlights but the emotion factor - the unified team - certainly added to the 'good feeling' ... A master-stroke or a fatal error by N.Korea's wack-job leadership?

THe first image is from Sochi - the phallic Olympic torch

The Korean Olympic flame looks akin to a water tower in a Florida town

Weird  how there was an American skating for So Korea...a French girl and Ukrainian guy skating for Germany...what's up with all that?

The Russians are skating for themselves.
I can't find it right now...but if you didn't see their program find it and watch. It was fantastic!

Agreed - absolutely nonsensical.  Of the 25 competitors, only a handful didn't crash at least once.  New Zealand had a youngster making her Olympic debut on what should have been the highlight of her sporting life, and she got picked up by the wind and dumped halfway through one of her spins.  This is a girl who is already ranked in the top ten in this sport, having won a World Cup event in March last year aged just 15. She had to sacrifice skill and style for safety just to get a finishing mark, and ended up 13th, while the winner, defending champion Jamie Anderson, was able to get through a great run in a relatively calm spell.

"It is pretty scary," she said of competing in high winds.

"You don't come into a jump the same as you usually would.

"You come in really fierce and ready to knuckle and hurt yourself, but also try and land."

Congratulations Ukraine on winning first gold medal !
Ukraine Gold in Aerials
Oleksandr Abramenko of Ukraine landed a back full-full-double full to take the freestyle skiing aerials competition. It was Abramenko’s fourth appearance at the Olympics but his first finish higher than sixth. It was Ukraine’s first medal of the Games, and third Winter gold medal ever.

Earlier a Ukrainian born figure skater won gold  competing for Germany.

Interesting that after all the Russian cheating in Sochi  that they have won NOTHING in Korea.

Many should never have been allowed to compete at all -- but all should have been excluded after the systematic cheating in Sochi.

Video shows North Korean cheerleader clapping for American atheletes and fellow cheerleader nudges her with an elbow to stop. Free speech media put it out there for the world to see and it'll probably cost her her life.

Some sort of justice for Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, as she was able to pick up a bronze medal in the Big Air competition yesterday.  She remained New Zealand's youngest Olympic medallist for just two hours, as Nico Porteous (who doesn't turn 17 until November), got a bronze in his half-pipe freeski discipline.

Congratulations to Norway for doing an excellent job collecting medals.

Two Russians were caught doping. One Russian who was caught wore a "I don't do doping" shirt earlier in the Olympics. I guess they didn't believe her.

The Russian Bobsled Federation -- yes, that is a thing -- confirmed that she tested positive for a banned substance, a heart medication that affects metabolism.
What makes this more surprising is two weeks before the Olympics she was seen wearing a shirt that read, " I don't do doping."

Probably not normal for a 30 year old top athlete to be taking medication for heart disease.

It's normal for the most physically gifted humans to take medicines for their physical problems. Everytime athletes are caught with medicine, that's when anti doping official learn they have physical problems so there's a common theme here. They're innocent and have just as many health problems as normal people do.

I am not in favor of performance enhancing drugs and Russia was rightfully banned for having a systematic plan for cheating.

However, I think some individual persons get caught for reasons not of their own choosing.
For instance, many common over the counter medications for common colds, etc., seem to contain forbidden ingredients.
I for one, would not know whether any such medications that I take contain the banned substances.

There are extensive protocols in place for taking any medication. Athletes at the top of the tree have access to specialised expert medical advice as well as private testing if they choose to.
Many commonly available over the counter medications have substances that are illegal for competitors -- and putting it simply-- you would have to be seriously dumb not to know this as a competitor.
Note how many who are caught out --blame over the counter,it was in the meat,my mother gave it to me -- type excuses. All to often it is the masking agents that are picked up -- so ask yourself what were they actually taking?

The Russian state sponsored cheating ( allegedly within Putins knowledge) is a disgrace -- and about all you can expect from these liars and cheats. Russia should never have been allowed to compete anywhere anytime for 10 years for what they have done.
Note -- 13 gold plus a swag of medals in Sochi-- they have struggled to win a medal here( even then-- one is caught cheating !@!)-- that in itself tells a story .

What should never be forgotten - are the competitors who were "beaten" by drug cheats. Their lives are permanently affected -disadvantaged  .

The Russians are simply bad world citizens --intent on trying to create trouble for everyone else .

Russian spies hacked the Olympics and tried to make it look like North Korea did it, U.S. officials say

Russian military spies hacked several hundred computers used by authorities at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in South Korea, according to U.S. intelligence.

They did so while trying to make it appear as though the intrusion was conducted by North Korea, what is known as a “false-flag” operation, said two U.S. officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter.

Because you are not competing in sports events ;). I believe that those who do have relevant lists readily available though their Federations, team trainers and physicians, etc. etc.

The Canadian team should be deprived of all medals, banned from the participation in closing the Olympics and impose a fine for causing moral harm to the 2018 Olympics for hijacking a car by a drunk Canadian athlete and a Canadian official who was intoxicated also, which defames the spirit of the Olympic movement  :P.

Dear JayH, shut up with your anti-Russian paranoia, please... it's really tiresome.

If we take into account that the strongest athletes were not invited by Olympic Committee without explaining, and Russia is represented by not the strongest athletics, the 6th place looks not too bad http://pyeongchang.olympicchannel.com/medals/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=fb-post&utm_campaign=social-owned_ResultsMedals
By the way, I hope for one more gold from hockey team, women have chances in skiing also.  :P
