Should I do Photography?
« on: December 11, 2017, 06:09:27 PM »
Well as I've been telling you guys I'm preparing myself for getting out in the FSU for when the weather warms up a bit. I think I should have the finances together by then to go at it a while out there. My thoughts have strayed a little onto Photography, in particular thoughts of setting myself up as a Photographer out there photographing girls for Model shoots for the likes of Dating Website/Agency photos, etc (no high End stuff just everyday). I would need to buy a DSLR which I can probably pick up a second hand one cheap online. I already have an old version of Photoshop I can use if needs be to correct any issues - generally I prefer as natural as possible of course. I've studied a module on Photography while I was on my Uni course so have a bit of guidance there, the rest I think should fall into place. Being a guy that has now looked at a lot of these dating site photos I've kind of picked up the stuff that looks good to a guy. So I think I could be well placed to offer my services to these girls. I would not be looking for a load of money for doing it just a bit of extra spending money really. So I was wondering what you guys think of this, a good idea?

As usual, a bad idea. Stay where you are and work on yourself for a while. It is illogical for you to think you will get such work. You are all over the place. Weren't you going to be an English teacher? What is next? A tour guide in Kherson? It shows you do not have a game plan. Good luck.

I have a game plan Wall, this is just a possible sideline I am considering.

Why? (rhetorical) You are so close. You can make multiple trips in short time. I don't want to add to the inevitable hammering you will get from the resident experts.

I don't have much advice for you as I didn't succeed in my search. Listen to 2tallbill. For a Cowgirls fan, he is shockingly smart and knows what he is talking about.  ;D

I would agree with Wallm, Trench. You do You. Like everything else in life there are multiple avenues and directions one can take to get to the same conclusion or end. Do what makes you comfortable.

That actually may not be as bad an idea and people may think. What is the number one thing that makes majority of individuals avoid messaging someone? For me, if someone has too perfect of a picture I just automatically assume that they are scams and don't even bother messaging them. But what if majority of the sites actually employed a photographer to take realistic non-photo shopped pictures.

Why would they need you, Trench?  There are countless talented professional photographers in both Russia and Ukraine who can give them direction and speak to them in their own language.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

Because I am their target audience. They are after a western man, I am a western man. I know western man culture, what we want and look for, what is more likely to work, etc. I accept there will be competion there nearly always is but most likely from natives not from foreigners. I will be able to photograph some hot women and get paid for it :D

The bigger fly in the ointment (besides being oblivious to being a foreigner in an "in country" lucrative market) is Trench thinking he knows what all WM like.

So I was wondering what you guys think of this, a good idea?

A rotten idea, unless you are already a well-established photographer with an impressive portfolio.  You'd probably be taken as just another amateur western porn casting agent.

There are many excellent photographers in FSU and the women already know where to go if they need pictures taken.

Think you're probably right Bill, I'll probably just kick out the photographer/English teaching as a bit of fun but won't expect anything serious or anything at all to happen with it.

I don't back down Boethius, I stand my ground and to hell with anyone else who thinks they have any right interfering in my business.

You couldn't even back down from buying a small UW everything she wanted while on holiday.  How will you deal with a UM muscled thug who has decided he wants your photography equipment?

I posted a story a while back of an Italian journalist - a photojournalist, who was shot by an officer in Ukraine's anti terror forces while working in the war zone.  The reason?  The officer wanted the photojournalist's equipment.  Rather than just stealing it, he decided the best way to obtain that equipment was to shoot the photojournalist.   Other journalists witnessed this.  The officer was unpunished.  He was eventually lured to Italy, where he faced trial.  Had he stayed in Ukraine, nothing would have happened to him.

So, go ahead.  You have largely been protected in your visits to Ukraine because, as a foreign tourist, you are a source of revenue for a lot of Ukrainians.  Start any sort of business there, particularly one where you are competing with locals, even if it is more of a hobby than cash, and you are fair game for them.  Further, more likely than not, the person who will tell those UM what you have, where you are, where your cash is, etc., will be one of your female "clients'.

I admit you probably have a point here Boethius over time if you grow up working class but become reasonably well off (well by FSU standards) I think it tends to make a person sloppy. Stuff that I would have probably seen coming in my younger days I perhaps am now not as at tentative too. A few bucks here or there or a bit of money shelled out on some photography equipment don't mean that much to me these days, in the past it did and to many Ukrainians/Russians it does. I think your probably right in that a girl could quite likely be sent along to check out the stash. Deceitfulness tends to be the technique used. I think the same attitude comes through in the dating there - by some women and their associates WM are seen as a business, not to say they would prostitute themselves, but a source of money/stuff to be had. Some girls will be sincere/only go so far or end up being attracted to the gUK but I think a fair few even on the free & pay monthly sites are out for what they can get. I think the situation in Russia may be less severe than Ukraine as Ukraine has a longer history of this and is more concentratedifficult. Also Ukraine is suffering worse economy wise than Russia and of course the conflict in the east is on their doorstep every day. Shame as I kind of like Ukraine and a lot of its women are hot :)

Russia is different because:

a)  their government cracked down on this some time ago; and
b)  Russians are wealthier.

In terms of character, they are pretty much the same.

I thought you were looking for a girl/wife.  This sounds like a hobby at best and a waste of time at worst.  How exactly are you are going to advertise if you don't speak or read Russian.  That's more money down the drain if you need to hire someone.  And what skills do you have at being a photographer?  With the technology as it is anyone can get a decent high quality camera and do photos.  Look on Instagram.

In the meantime have you talked to any new girls on Skype and set up dates to actually meet them when you do your trip?
