Buy Hryvnia and cash in when market 'correction' occurs
« on: January 24, 2018, 11:30:56 AM »
http://economics.unian.info/2362922-big-mac-index-shows-ukraines-hryvnia-undervalued-by-69-the-economist.html

Excerpts:

Ukrainian hryvnia was recognized as the most undervalued currency, that's according to the so-called Big Mac index, according to The Economist.

The hryvnia rate should be about UAH 8.9 per dollar, according to The Economist.

The government closed Kyiv State University (Taras Shevchenko State University)  because it cannot pay to heat it. Based on that and it’s failure to obtain loans, and basic market fundamentals, I don’t believe the hryvnia is undervalued.

After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

Hi Boe, current name is Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.  The 'state' part of name of Ukraine universities went out when Ukraine no longer a 'state' in USSR.

Second, I am going to order a shipment of Big Mac's from Ukraine to be resold here in North America.  Do you want in on the deal?

Sure thing. I like Big Macs, though I don’t eat them anymore.

PS - The university was called Kiev State University, in the name of Taras Shevchenko, in Soviet times, as well.

 Accounting for cost in transport, storage, reheating + labour wages, that hypothetical arbitrage opportunity probably goes to zero.

Hmm, now as for company shares on the other hand... I actually bought a distressed Iron Ore company called Ferrexpo, listed as FXPO on the LSE in 2015. Started buying in at $0.40, then sold for roughly 7x its value. My regret was only buying $750 worth  :'( As you all know, I am a postgrad student with limited capital means.

Not sure if such distressed opportunities still exist today ML. The overseas investor panic on Ukraine seems largely over. Perhaps property prices are still cheap?

Anyone care to advise?
