'Oz govt wants the right to read JayH's msgs ...
« on: December 09, 2018, 10:16:07 AM »
The Australian govt has rushed through legislation that demands firms hand over encryption keys to access data without the users' knowledge for reasons of national security ...

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-46463029

I'm just wondering - like ( say with Russia ) how end-to end  encrypted msgs can be intercepted or listened to ....????

I know Russia 'banned' Telegram- because they simply couldn't hand over pre-shared key encryption data for end to end encrypted communications

I'd not heard WhatsApp was banned in Russia ....

Why are geeks always thinking that governments would be even remotely interested in seeing what they are doing :-\

I see it often, some geeky guy going to extremes of going all around the houses wasting good time and worry over actually thinking governments would be at all bothered about them and accessing their PC, lol.

And the reward for such a nosy gov? Apparently finding out said geek is up to level 20 on space invaders and has a machine full off equally pointless geeky info & articles. Wow! I bet they are salivating eagerly over all that stuff

If Australia's anything like the US it will go to court and be ruled unconstitutional or whatever the legal equivalent is in Australia. These types of laws are very difficult to pass in the US.

IMO I have no doubt that the spy agencies plus the FBI and other agencies in the US would love to be able to press a button and listen in on any phone call at any time or to read any email at any time.

It is not about snooping into daily boring things that worries ppl about privacy and government breach.

Let's say you meet someone from Russia or wherever.  Things are going great, and you want to marry her and bring her to the UK/USA/Australia.  It is a long paperwork and waiting process for immigration.  During the wait you joke around on chat and say something like "just come over on any visa and let's just risk it", or something similar.  It is just a joke between you two.  Then, months later, you receive a letter saying the application is denied due to evidence of intended fraud, because they checked all your communication and saw that comment.

That is the fear - from something like the above, or business purchases, or hearings on custody for children during a divorce, etc.

At least as far as the UK is concerned they struggle to pay to employ the manpower for day to day functionality of gov departments. There's no way they have got the funding to pay for staff to be snooping into the ins & outs of a person(s) everyday affairs. Think of the millions of people in the country, it would be a logistical nightmare to even follow a small percentage of the total population, the cost to do so would be huge, then there would be all the contesting of what was meant and said.

I'm guessing most other countries can't afford such micro-management surveillance of their population either. Add to that the moment such material was dredged up everyone would either ditch the apps, etc or be quite minimal in their use of them. It would become a pointless road to go down. Mostly they are just concerned with high level terrorist threats. The puny day to day drivel of our lives holds no interest for the powers that be, in fact I'm sure they would greet such news as a rather tiresome tedious affair they couldn't nor would want to care less about. The sort of 'do you know what Mrs xxx said about her divorce the other day! Wellll....' gasp, yawn.

They would be no more interested in hearing about someone's divorce, business purchase, custody hearing, etc. than they would about the geek who has reached level 20 on space invaders. These are powerful people we are talking about (politicians, heads of gov departments, etc) they really couldn't give a fig over some child's custody hearing on whether the kid ends up with Harry or Sally, it is insignificant information to them that they do not care about, they really don't care about the case or where the kid goes nor want to know of it. As long as their department functions and covers the basic service functions that's all they want to know. They will not be instructing their staff to go off wire tapping difficult cases of which there are no doubt many while their workload stacks up.

Problem is all too many people are buoyed up by their own self-importance they fail to realize that their lives hold little importance for the government as a whole. Whether this or that is the outcome of whatever situation someone is in isn't something that even registers on their radar however much we might like to think it might do.

I mean to help exemplify this further, take loan applications, go a decade or so ago and any application was likely checked over by a human being, they had the final say given all the information forwarded to them by credit ref agencies. Now though most loan applications are done automatically by computer with monies and cards appearing in the person's bank account almost over night. The computer checks off what is asked for with the credit reference agencies and any info they hold against the application. If it doesn't trip over any significant areas then the loan is approved. No need to employ large office spaces full of staff any more. There's just no longer the time, cost nor inclination to do so. There are so many people around these days and efficiencies have to be improved so much that the ins & outs of a persons blow by blow financial life is of no consequence in the grand scheme of things. The same has become true for governments and their departments also.

Yet you think they'll find all the money to monitor EU citizens and goods coming in and out in less than 4 moths - in the event of a ;hard brexit '? ;)) ?    Ouch - another TC fail ...

I drive past GCHQ when I go shopping in Cheltenham - and the money is found ...

Poor TC, another insight into how his mind doesn't work..

Those listening / looking aren't interested in TC's inane attempts at 'courting' ...  i

Interesting, you just answered yourself about the funding and manpower issue.

Back to the immigration Visa process - they enter your information and then have the computer perform a detailed search, using keywords such as tourist, immigration, visa, approval, etc.  The computer spits back several hits, and someone then reads the conversations where those words show up.  Probably will take about 10-15 minutes, and another 10 minutes to fill out the application denied form.  There you go, just 30 minutes of a gov employee's time is all that is needed.

For things like immigration applications, they have the time and interest to check your background thoroughly..

maybe ya'll should watch the movie "Snowden" if you haven't.

Don't worry about what the govt knows about you, that is more then you know about yourself anyway, and with the bonus factor, they will never "forget" anything you ever said said or done online in any way.

They don't micromanage surveillance.  They have programmes that pick up specific words in phone calls, or in online communications.

You mean everytime someone mentions the word 'terrorist','attacker','explosion' in their favourite Netflix series on go the tape recorder, lol. No, this may happen for specific people they are following/already suspicious of yet for the great bylk of tge general public they don't have the manpower to aim it in a scattergun/wide net approach. So again your everyday bod they will not bother with.

For things like immigration applications, they have the time and interest to check your background thoroughly..

So on a 7-8 hour day they will process the grand total of 14-16 applications. That's not a lot of work considering the maby million of applications they will receive each year. Theoretically what you say is possible like loan applications use credit ref agencies. BUT the would have to have special link ups to all sorts of stuff, Facebook, Whatsapp, Yahoo mail, etc. That gives them direct access not just a Google search sort of bollocks that data would be too random in most cases to be worth bothering with. I don't think they have the sort of direct link ups and systems for this at the moment. It would also require the computer to filter out all the tosh people waffle on about and get to any decent info so that is another layer of technical ability. I don't think without this they would sacrifice employees time reading through lots of stuff just to get to the odd piece of useable info some way down the page. So accuracy and relevancy would be an issue.

I could only seem them using such a system on criminal cases, possibly immigration cases that raise suspicion. Where little Jimmy may end up with one parent or the other, no I don't think they could give a toss on stuff like that it's too low brow to be of that much interest to them.

you really are clueless, take a moment to read about PRISM and maybe you will get some idea how data-mining is done, right now you sound as knowledgeable as my 84 year old mom.

They do not receive a million spousal visa applications each year.

The dept of Homeland security shows about 30,000 K1 visa entries to the US per year.  It is estimated that about 35% of K1 visas are denied.  That means there are about 46,000 K1 visa applicants per year.  For a staff of, let's say, 100 people in that department, that is approximately 200,000 man hours of potential work (average 2000 hours of work per year per person for a normal 40 hour work week).  It means about 4.5 hours are spent per application.

I submitted my K1 application in June, and  just received the approval last week.  156 days from receipt of submittal to approval.  Why do you think it took that long?  Any guesses?

Oh, and if you want to argue about government funding for those 100 people...they are funded by the K1 applicant.  I paid $535 to apply.  That would easily support at least 8 hours of employment to snoop into my business.

Work or sitting in people's trays and being punted around thd office. Remember the office building etc costs on top also of staff wages.
