I don't want to scare you, so I'll return to an area where I'm more predictable :D.

Here's an interesting example of a rather reputable German composer (born in 1685) who was 'inspired' ;) by a work (L'Estro Armonico) of an earlier Italian composer, Antonio Vivaldi (born in 1678):

TECHNOLOGY & MUSIC
Keyboard Instruments

The tinny sound of the 4 harpsichords in J.S. Bach's Concerto, due their strings being 'plucked' in guitar-like fashion, is a reminder of how technical innovations may affect composers and the music they produce.

Harpsichord music was mostly written with short, rapidly changing notes because of the limited dynamics of the instrument. Until a harpsichord maker from Padua, Bartolomeo Cristoforis, invented at the end of the 1600s his gravicembalo col piano e il forte where the strings were hit by small hammers rather than plucked.

The instrument became known as the fortepiano (loud-soft) and, after about a hundred years of improvements and refinements, the pianoforte, piano for short.

Most of the keyboard music written from, say, 1750 to 1810, that today we hear performed on a concert grand piano, was originally played on the fortepiano. Here's the same piece on the two different instruments:

TECHNOLOGY & MUSIC
Brass Instruments

A similar improvement occurred in the early 1800 when valves were invented for brass instruments, which theretofore could provide a decent range of notes only in their higher register through harmonics, as is still done on bugles.

TECHNOLOGY & MUSIC
The Flute

Once again in the same period, Bavarian flautist, composer, acoustician and silversmith Theobald Boehm didn't like the inconvenient fingering and reedy sound of contemporary wooden flutes (recorders), and invented a metal alternative with keys, the classical, modern transverse flute.

And,  in 1841, Adolphe Sax, Belgian-born instrument-maker, flautist and clarinetist, gaves us the saxophones :D!

cool stuff Sandro.. :)

OK, here is something pretty obscure.. would be curious if anyone knows this band or ever saw them live.. I only saw them once.  They are very well known in art circles because they never signed with a label.. totally DIY.. they are still around and do free shows..

I saw the show "O" the first week it opened in Las Vegas, I always find the music and abilities amazing.  Cirque du Soleil tickets are expensive, but well worth it, the music, costumes and presentation are always original and amazing.

TECHNOLOGY & MUSIC
The Theremin

Perhaps the most 'technological' yet invented is this FSU instrument 8):

Quote
The theremin was originally the product of Russian government-sponsored research into proximity sensors. The instrument was invented by a young Russian physicist named Lev Sergeivich Termen (known in the West as Léon Theremin) in October 1920 after the outbreak of the Russian civil war. After positive reviews at Moscow electronics conferences, Theremin demonstrated the device to Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin. Lenin was so impressed with the device that he began taking lessons in playing it, commissioned six hundred of the instruments for distribution throughout the Soviet Union, and sent Theremin on a trip around the world to demonstrate the latest Soviet technology and the invention of electronic music. After a lengthy tour of Europe, during which time he demonstrated his invention to packed houses, Theremin found his way to the United States, where he patented his invention in 1928 (US1661058).

Personally, I don't find its eerie sound that attractive, it reminds me of:

I think Alegrìa was somewhat inspired by gamelan, the classical, percussions-only Balinese music:
