Ukrainians seeking Asylum...in the USA?
« on: August 07, 2014, 10:58:19 PM »
There's a war in eastern Ukraine. People are fleeing. Lots of refugees. Can these people find 'asylum' status here in the USA?

Refugees are outside the country where as Asylees are in the country.  The application for Asylum is pretty easy to get and stay in for a long time.  Refugee status is harder.

You need to be in USA to apply for asylum. You have one year from the day you entered the country to apply for asylum. You don't need to be here legally. You need to have a valid reason for seeking asylum.

There is a long form to fill out and a hearing. It would help if you are fluent in English. You would probably need an attorney.

I've ruled out seeking asylum for her and her sons. Just getting them here for that would be an obstacle. There's the ocean, the far distance, etc. Also, asylum is built around 'personal persecution' rather than around escaping a war zone.

Those in the know say Putin will make one more big push.
