Relocating
« on: March 05, 2007, 05:55:01 AM »
After reading some of the recent topics on the forum I decided to run a small poll here :) May be the question is a little bit silly, but it’s just interesting, what people think about this problem :) So, imagine such a situation: you’ve found the FSU woman you dreamed about… well, let’s say it in a little bit other way: you’ve found a FSU woman who you want to get married to :) Now you need to decide, where to live at least for the first time. What would you chose? :)
Please, explain your choice :)

I guess that would largely depend on the source of income, especially for people who is salaried and make the most of their income from work.

If a person can get a comparable income after moving or even a higher one, may be he/she would consider moving.

In case he/she would rather struggle to find a similarly rewarding job at a new place, or even would have no chances to be employed at all  :(  - that would be a reason not to move.

It is unlikely if not impossible that a successful professional man in Europe or US can find work with compareable salary in the FSU.
I am afraid such a decision cannot be weighed with monetary values.

My girl asked if I would live in Ukraine and I said I would consider it... but it would depend on when and how!

If it was just the two of us (no young children) I would happily take a year off to live with her in Dnepr because I could do some work remotely.  She explained it to me as an important "concept" because she feels like I would understand her better once she moves to Australia.

I think there would be many considations but I'd love to live there for a while...  Once children arrived though I have a feeling life in Australia would be better for our family.

The answer would be not no, but HELL NO!!. After about 2 weeks I'm ready to be in The United States on America. Not taking anything away from Ukraine but theres a reason this country is considered the place to be by most. I'm about to buy some property there but it's only for a month or so at a time.

If there was a really serious reason to relocate there I would do it.   Something like for some reason we were unable to get a visa or serious family health issues there but I can't say living there appeals to me all that much for weather and job related issues.   If I was going to live there by choice I would probably perfer it was someplace like Sochi or Crimea.

Thank you for sharing your opinions :)

In case he/she would rather struggle to find a similarly rewarding job at a new place, or even would have no chances to be employed at all  :(  - that would be a reason not to move.

Of course it’s challengeable for anyone (both for men and women) to move overseas and manage to find what to do in a foreign country. But if there is a willingness to do it in general, then it’s possible to adjust there. Here there are some members, who succesfully did it, Rvrwind, for example :)
I’m asking about the possibility of such decision for different forum members in general – I mean, to live your native country and move to your wife, to learn language and so on :)

It is unlikely if not impossible that a successful professional man in Europe or US can find work with compareable salary in the FSU.

I would say, it’s possible not for everybody – profession itself plays important role here.

I am afraid such a decision cannot be weighed with monetary values.

True :)

Not taking anything away from Ukraine but theres a reason this country is considered the place to be by most.

Ops, i didn't quite understand this phrase...

That was a quote from the post by Greg where he has said that for most people USA would be the place to live and there is a reason for this.
I just wanted to know the reason.

Aha, now I understand the meaning of Greg's quote. It was a little bit twisted for Russian ear ;)

I would not mind at all relocating to either Ukraine or Russia and living on either an extended temporary or permanent basis.

And what is that reason?

Different reasons for different people, but Tony Blair said recently when asked why he was so supportive of America "A simple way to take measure of a country is to look at how many want in ... and how many want out." America is by far the greatest nation in the world at this moment, just like Great Briton was in the early part of the 20th century, and just like some other country will be in the future. China and Russia both have the potential to be the next "great civilization", but to deny the current power and contribution to the world as a whole by America is a denial not based in fact.

Interesting bit of trivia; America currently gives more money in foreign aid to other countries each year than the next 8 countries combined.

Another interesting tidbit.. a few places where America has given foreign aid and support ended up being war zones..  Of course this has little or nothing to do with this topic...

Would I relocate to her country?.. It would have been tough, but yes.

Doing so when I retire may be a good option.  I really admire those like RVR that have taken such bold steps.

I voted "Yes, I would" but it is more like what BC said for a retirement option as our money would go a heck of a lot further.

If Elena had her way we would sell everything right now, pack up, and move to Russia.

This is kind of an appropriate poll at this time. I already did!
I've been here 4 years now & to tell the truth, I'm about ready to head back to civilization! In fact its already in the works & I will be posting on that topic later in a different thread.

Hmmm...:) You know, when I was posting this poll, I was 100% sure, that statistic will be something like 10 to 1. I communicated with people from abroad a lot (due to my profession) and they told me, that in their countries people consider Ukraine to be uncivilized and the idea of coming here even for a short term sounds weird for them. It was interesting to watch people changing their mind after coming here, but of course it depends on the city and on what this person is going to do here (is he invited as a specialist and so on).
But back to our statistic :) It shows 8 to 14 now, which is really surprising :)

I voted "Yes, I would" but it is more like what BC said for a retirement option as our money would go a heck of a lot further.

Well, of course here you need much less money to lead a luxury life ;), but as for retirement option... I think our medicine is not that good to move here after retirement.

Wow, I can not believe there are so many guys who would even consider relocating to Russia.   No way for me unless I was forced into it.  My reasons, inadequate health care system, no berries year round - in fact, pretty much no quality food ingredients most of the year.  Unless the food is Russian produced the source usually is really questionable in that part of the world.  Pork, chicken, potatoes and maybe sudak (fish) is about all I can usually safely eat with the pickled and preserved stuff after that but that is only for a short period of time.  The roads absolutely suck.  Open gas smell in any city I've been to.  The pipes are old and rusted throughout the systems there.  I could go on and on about things that lower ones life expectancy..................but we all know there are many reasons Russian men and women have such comparatively short life expectancies.  Even if I was very rich in Moscow it would not help much.  You have to deal with prevalent inadequate infrastructure which is going to decrease ones life expectancy.

Initially, I was cautious to vote on the poll because I wasn't sure about it.  I then thought about my Russian project.

Then, I voted Yes!  because of my project on the Russian language that I am about to start to work on.  I might have to move to there on a temporary basis in the future to teach and share the Russian cued speech system in the Russian language with those Russians.  I might keep going back and forth between the USA and Russia for this reason.  Isn't it nice to be fluent in Russian because you need it for your work?

On the other hand, I still prefer to stay here in the USA because of many great opportunities in my field of profession (biomedical engineering/audio engineering), potential stability of my work/business and there are so many opportunities and so many things here in the states.  Still, there are many problems here in the states.  Well, No country is 100% perfect.  Just take the best from each country.

Wouldn't it be nice if Russia becomes the greatest country in the world in the future when you already have a Russian wife?  So, you can just move to there with your Russian wife and enjoy the greatness....   :D

Chelchov,

Depending on where in Texas to decide to live, there are large communities of Russians in the bigger cities like Dallas and Houston. I.e., google "Russians in Houston", etc.  You may find you don't have to travel to Russia to update your Russian language skills.

For a large percentage of the world's population Russia already IS the greatest country in the world. A statement like that is very American-Ego-Centric isn't it, even as a joke?

Wow, I can not believe there are so many guys who would even consider relocating to Russia.

Yep, it's so... unexpected! :)

No way for me unless I was forced into it.  My reasons, inadequate health care system, no berries year round - in fact, pretty much no quality food ingredients most of the year.

Hm, Bruce, have you ever been to supermarkets? ;) Of course I mean Ukrainian ones, not Russian, but I’m sure the situation is the same there. I'm just lazy to look up in my dictionary to find translation for all kinds of berries available in supermarkets, but believe me, they are not limited with bilberry, strawberry and so on :) It's just the matter of money - would you buy a small basket of bilberry for 20$ or not. I would better wait for summer, but it's me and my personal opinion ;)

Unless the food is Russian produced the source usually is really questionable in that part of the world.  Pork, chicken, potatoes and maybe sudak (fish) is about all I can usually safely eat with the pickled and preserved stuff after that but that is only for a short period of time.

Again, i can say it only about Ukraine, but except of "pork, chicken, potatoes and maybe sudak", you can find any food produced in EU, for example. Cheese, shocolate, diary products and even German pilled sunflower seeds :)

The roads absolutely suck.

Well, they equally suck in Hungary, but nevertheless it's a part of Europe now ;) Of course it again depends on the city. I can only imagine the state of roads in small distant towns.

Open gas smell in any city I've been to.

And what cities have you visited? :)

The pipes are old and rusted throughout the systems there.

Again, it's not a problem, if you have money. And if you have big money, you can just buy land lot and build your own house with all the facilities you need :)

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to persuade anybody, that life here is better than in EU or the USA, it would be stupid to think so :) But most of the issues listed above are not as horrible as they are thought to be :)

Wouldn't it be nice if Russia becomes the greatest country in the world in the future when you already have a Russian wife?  So, you can just move to there with your Russian wife and enjoy the greatness....   :D

It would be great, but mean economists say it’s going to be China that will rule the world’s economy in 50 years ;)

I sure hope not because you can't even begin to compare Russia or the Ukraine with the west. Perhaps parts of EU but it is not even close to Canada or the US in any way shape or form & at the rate they accept change it will take them 500 years before they even get close!!

Sorry but I think I'd rather see China in the lead, Russia tends to do things a$$ backwards, where at least the Chinese are organized & more productive. Russia tends to have a very narrow outlook of the world where China tends to think globaly. China may be communist but at least they prospered under communism where Russia failed at it miserably & now they are failing at democracy.

The Chinese gave up on communism as an economic model in the 70's and 80's, so communism failed there too.  Even though China sees itself as the center of the world,  historically it have been quite insular.   I would say they far from acting globally, though they have started to change lately.
