Bravo! I always liked that piece but the name of it eludes my memory. Sandro! The guy sung it from the heart and did a superb job.

I recently watched the "three tenors" who performed in Italy some years ago. This guys voiced matched theirs. Incredible. I hope to hear more from him.

The aria is Nessun dorma (Let None Sleep) from the final act of Giacomo Puccini's Turandot. Here's a more famous version (with Spanish subtitles ;)) :

The Welsh have beautiful singing voices (tenors and baritones in particular, consider Tom Jones). And here's Harry Secombe, better known as one of the 3 Goons in BBC's The Goon Show, along with Peters Sellers and Spike Milligan.

Thanks Sandro, I'd knew you'd know. For those that don't know, Sandro has beautiful naked wome.. music on his website. Some of my favorites on his site are from Cole Porter.

Wasn't Pavarotti  noted for singing Nessun Dorma? Wasn't that his 'theme song' ?

I like this, it's by Russian Rapper Delfin, but not a rap song. Great tune, driving rhythm, simple lyrics even I can understand, but the best is the enigmatic imagery of the 1980 Moscow Olympics in the video, Mishka's tear, flying off in to the sulphur sky, the cosmonauts on the videoscreen, superb!

It was of his cavalli di battaglia ('war horses'). All singers have a repertoire of favourite songs/arias in which they excel and that become their 'signature' themes. And Big Luciano had a great voice, with a beautiful tessitura in the upper register, his high C (C5) being one of the purest in the trade.

Here's his Schubert's Ave Maria:

If you consider that the "lyrics" are by St.Thomas Aquinas (late XIIIth century) and the music by César Franck (late XIXth century), it goes to show that a good song can go on for ages and ages ;).

The true classics never get old.  The first time I heard this version was in 1995 and I was surprised by Stings voice.  Pavarotti definitely knew what he was doing.

I was surprised Sting.
Well, he seems to feel the attraction of ancient music: in late 2006 he put out an album ("Songs From the Labyrinth": http://www2.deutschegrammophon.com/special/?ID=sting-dowland) of Elizabethan, lute-accompanied songs :).

He was also sang "Mo Ghile Mear" on the album "The Long Black Veil"
with The Chieftains

Sorry, I couldn't find a video of Sting and the Chieftains only a slide show of Ireland;

As far as the orginal video I loved the look on Simon's face when that first bar was sung-priceless!!!

Not only did the singer have a beautiful voice, but the passion to go with it.

That was extremely ... well... uplifting. Thanks for sharing.  I had not seen this...  the frog into a prince...  Does anyone know if the gentleman "Paul" is actually performing/recording now?

Have to admit, this freakish rock n roll guitarist has a secret love of opera... love this guy's story.

I think Paul Potts is truly gifted and extremely talented,  he has an album already , but unfortunately I do not think they will promote him that much as you know those crazy laws of show business , they pay a lot of attention to the appearance and he is just a normal guy with a strong amazing voice, and our society is so delusive about such doubtful singers as KenC showed in the video of those who have no taste no voice only naked arse and boobs, trying to copy Afro American culture, well they will never get there as Afro Americans are very talented and they were raised on rap and r 'n' b music and the rhythm is in their blood, so Russians suck in comparison with them.

Though I believe they wont leave Paul and would record much more of classical songs as he is really individual

Yeah, normally it's difficult for anyone outside the mold to really get the big break and the follow up promotion.. but opera is a little more flexible in that regard.  Heck, grow out his beard and maybe get a minor cosmetic dental fix and he'd look exactly like many other opera personalities.

A Christian Rock group I played in back in the day actually came pretty close to being signed by Starsong.. They gave our lead singer fits about his teeth, and wanted us to fire our drummer because he didn't look the part of an early 90's rocker.  And this was a "Christian" record label... yeah, right.. money talks... especially to God I guess...

I hope they do give this guy a real chance of a lasting career ..  I'll do my part and go buy the album.  ;)

Neapolitan songs
« Reply #23 on: February 25, 2008, 05:50:38 PM »
Although from the north of Italy, I think I should give you a taste of the great musical tradition of Naples, from the Southern part of our country. Renzo Arbore, our equivalent of Woody Allen (actor, director, clarinet jazz player, etc.) started some years ago his Orchestra italiana with the specific purpose of resurrecting and proposing around the world these classics. Here's Era 'de maggio ('Twas in May), composed in 1885 on the verses of a famous Neapolitan poet, Salvatore di Giacomo.

Not surprisingly, considering Naple's history, you may notice in the initial solo some echoes of Arabic and Spanish music. It's usually due to the presence of the typical Neapolitan sixth chord (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neapolitan_chord for the technically-minded), its use not restricted to Neapolitans only (Beethoven used it in his Moonlight sonata ;)).

... and since this RWD, and Russian balalaikas sound not unlike Neapolitan mandolins, here's the rousing march Soldaty V Pohod ('Off We Go' or, rather, 'Soldiers, march !', IINM) by Aleksandrov's Russian Red Army Choir:

P.S.: for those who like the Red Army Choir, here's the page of an 18-y.o. Serbian from Mitrovitza, Kosovo ;) (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=93709459) containing a more symphonic rendition of  My Army, the USSR National Anthem and, of course, Kalinka!
