Title: American Football Thread
Post by: 2tallbill on December 10, 2017, 07:56:30 PM
I realize that the rest of the world plays their own version of football
so good on you. You can search the entire internet and can't find me
disparaging your sport.

This thread is about American football, which had spilled over to a
couple of other places, so I thought I would start a thread so that
it would have a place.

If you follow Canadian Football feel free to comment on it here. The
game is very similar and Athletes cross back and forth. If you follow
the soccer type football feel free to start your own thread. I don't
know enough about it to comment on it one way or another.

If you have a favorite team please post who they are.

Question of the Day

I know many Green Bay fans, although haven't found one to ask
this question. For those who don't know lately Green Bay has been
causing my Cowboys grief when they enter the playoffs.

My question is this:

How did the Cleveland Browns make them take them to overtime before
beating them? You can't say "because Aaron Rogers was hurt" since the
Browns don't have a QB either.

The Browns have won 1 game and 27 loses in the last 2 years, yet the
Packers couldn't beat them without going into overtime??

Maybe Jone knows?

Proud member of Raider Nation. Seems we both became fans of our respective teams by watching them beat the Broncos.

Actually, Kizer threw for 3 touchdowns and Crowell ran for over 100 yards. Overall, Browns had more offensive yards and their defense is 9th best in the league. I don't think it's because Rogers is gone but possibly because the Packers had no running game and their defense isn't that strong this year, 23rd overall. That's my amateur opinion.

Considering that Cleveland was leading 21-7 at the start of the 4th quarter I was a little surprised they managed to win at all.

Well, we are fu**ed. Wentz probably has a torn ACL. Hoping not the case. He was brilliant today throwing 4 TDs and almost 300 yards against a Rams defense that had given up only 14 Passing TDs all year. We won and clinched NFC East. We will most likely have the #1 seed. There is always something going wrong with us. Bad Karma I suppose.

BTW, Duck Fallas.  :P

That was a big loss and hopefully Foles can hold things together.  You do have a pretty decent rest of the team so it isn't hopeless.

That would be great for Eagles fans but the word is he is done for the season.  Personally I think they can be pretty competitive without him but it is a big loss.

Woohoo....we are in the Super Bowl.  :D

All I wanted for this season was Wentz to show improvement from year 1 and prove he is a franchise QB. We got that and a ton more.

Hey Bill, this is what a dominant team looks like. We lost Wentz (will be the best QB in NFL next year and really was this year and should win the MVP), Peters, Hicks, Sproles and more and still won. No excuses about injuries. As long as Jerry is the GM, your team will suck. And that brilliant headcoach who claps at everything..weird. And that QB who sucks. When was the Cowgirls defense good? Go back to Randy White, Ed Too tall Jones? Cowgirls will have to deal with Wentz for a decade.  :P

Billy, I hope you didn't buy that SHEhawks in Super Bowl jersey like you wanted at the beginning of the season.

We have a chance to win the big game if our DL comes to play.

My advice to the Eagles...make sure there are no NE CHEATriots employees taping your practices and walkthroughs. They already stole one Super Bowl from us in 2004.

Life is awesome. I have my Anne with me and my Eagles in Super Bowl!! Can't ask for better start in 2018.

My advice to wallm, boycott!!! Tell the NFL and Eagles you will not watch the Superbowl or any further Eagle's games until they get rules in place to keep politics and activism out of sports. Do your part. I know you got the strength and courage to refrain from football and sex until the changes are implemented.

What does sex got to do with this? I can abstain from football but not sex. ;D
I had not watched the Super Bowl since 2004. But will watch this year.

BTW, nobody on the Eagles kneels during the anthem. We are the good guys. We love America and respect our troops.

They can't be two quarterbacks if they had a love child.  One had to be a pitcher and the other a catcher.

Did anyone see the Ref go over to Pretty Boy and congratulate him at the end of the game? I have never seen that in an NFL game. It is as if the zebras are so impressed with Mr. Bundchen that they feel honored to be on the same field with him. And Cheatriots were flagged once in the game. No f'ing way a team can be playing a nearly penalty free game.

Something smells here. It is as if the League wanted Cheatriots in the Super Bowl. Hopefully we get fair shake in the Super Bowl and don't have to play the Cheatriots and the officials.

I can't wait for our DL to get their hands on Mr. Bundchen.

There is a culture of corruption & unethical conduct surrounding the Cheatriots. It as if their mantra is "if you aren't cheating, you aren't trying."

Super Bowl

I know it's late notice, but a friend of  mine has two tickets for the Super Bowl in Minneapolis, MN at the new U. S. Bank Stadium on Sunday, February 4th.

They are box seats and he paid $3,500 per ticket, which includes the ride to and from the airport, lunch, dinner, a $400.00 bar tab and a pass to the winners locker room after the game.

What he didn't realize when he bought them last year was that it's on the same day as his wedding.

If you are interested, he is looking for someone to take his place.

It's at St. Paul's Church at 3 p.m.  Her name is Ashley.

She's 5'4", about 115 pounds will be the one in the white dress.

That's good to hear. I respect the Eagles a lot more now. I'll allow you to watch a few commercials during the game.

I was hoping NE would lose (I just want to see diversity of winners);

If NE loses, Pitbull will cry. Do you want her to cry?

My prediction. Eagles don't have enough to win it all and with the fans they have, like wallm who's not going to watch the game, nobody is going to cheer them on.

Jone, I played football (a hundred years ago with leather helmets and drop kicks
and the statue of liberty were the leading plays of the day)

The quarterback catches the ball from the center nearly every single play of the
game. Then the qb can throw. So, many times they catch and pitch on the same
play. QB's are like that, which is why defensive players say that they should wear
dresses.

The game starts in less than 1/2 hour from now. Imo Wallm's Eagles have been the surprise of the year.

If they can remember to play 4 full quarters and that the Pats are a confident, well experienced team that never thinks they don't have a chance.... and never quit trying.... then they have a great chance to take this game.

Good luck Eagles... don't make the same mistake so many teams have made in the last few years!

He's a good quarterback but you don't know yet if he can handle the pressure of the playoffs or Super Bowl. Foles proved himself. Neither Wentz or Foles are going to want to sit on the bench next season. Eagles are going to have to get rid of one of them. I predict it's going to be the Super Bowl MVP.

You missed one. One Eagles fan was seen at airport with chair from stadium. :-\ We are the deplorables. I lay that the feet of the parents who obviously didn't raise them well. My son would never do that. I am an Eagles fan and was a season ticket holder for 14 years. Never once did I cause any trouble much less turn over cars. I sat with fans of Foreskins, Cowgirls, NY Midgets and never got into a fight. We had some back and forth on who sucked more but that was about it. They would talk about our empty trophy case and that is no longer the case. The narrative that Eagles fans are the worst is a lazy one from media who cry about more knuckleheads throwing snowballs at a mythical figure (Santa Claus) that doesn't exist. There had been no one killed unlike in San Francisco or LA I don't recall where a fan was murdered and another one spent year in a coma. There had been a recent article in Washington Post which talked about where the most trouble happens. San Diego which averages about 21 arrests per game. Not anymore of course. Eagles came in with 3.2 or something. There are a handful of imbeciles that give us all a bad name. That is the case in every other city. Fans rioted in Detroit, Chicago, Montreal, Cleveland, Boston after championships in those cities too. When in doubt talk about Eagles fans. F you media.

I don't believe you didn't watch Billy.

If one has to go, Foles it is. Wentz has greatness written all over him. He is a no doubt franchise QB. Foles I think would be content to stay as backup. We should redo his contract and extend him. Wentz is on his rookie deal anyway and doesn't cost too much. And Foles is not motivated by money. His family is filthy rich and he himself made a lot of dough already.

It's true, I didn't watch. If I'm not going to watch my team, I'm certainly not going to watch yours. I did read about Philly's and Foles greatness in the Superbowl. As you know my team, Seattle Seahawks, barely missed the playoffs. The were too busy with social justice projects on company time. Before a game they barely loss, they spent 2 hours in the locker room talking about how they are going to protest during the National Anthem instead of talking about how they are going to beat the team they're playing. I blame the coach for not getting them focused too.. When those guys focus on football and protest on their own time, I will turn on the tv and watch again.

Agreed. It is hard to repeat. As long as we aren’t killed by injuries there is a chance. We also get a 1st place schedule. We play Minnesota, Atlanta, Carolina, Texans, Colts at home. We play Rams (again), Saints, Yuckaneers, Titans on the road and Jaguars in London. Murderous schedule. Historically, ATL and Vikings have been our biatches. And we get 6 games against NFC Least. It will be sweet if we sweep Bill’s Cowgirls. We have to win all 6 in the division. And everyone will be gunning for us. It will be very difficult.

Let us say the two teams are healthy. No injury excuses for the cowgirls. If you take a look at it honestly, will the cowgirls win either of the games? No. The difference? The QB and roster talent. We have a franchise QB. Cowgirls don't have one. I thought they did but he was awful last year. I could see he isn't a good enough player to elevate others around him. There is no comparison between the rosters. We have more talent everywhere. We have great depth. The only player I would want on our team is Sean Lee if and when he is healthy which is not often. Dez is worthless and overpaid. Not afraid of Elliot. We have the best run defense and it will be better with Jordan Hicks coming back. Who do you want as headcoach? Pederson with balls the size of watermelons or the clapper? Not looking good, Bill.

It's the Playoff's again

There are 8 teams left and there will be 4 left after this weekend.

The NFC
The Cowboys play the Rams
The Eagles play the Saints

The winner of those two games play for the NFC Championship
and the winner of that goes to the Super Bowl

The AFC
The Colts play the Chiefs
The Patriots play the Chargers

The winner of those two games play for the AFC Championship
and the winner of that goes to the Super Bowl

My son was coached by Zack Follett who gave up playing because he broke his neck so many times.

I am genuinely intrigued.  How can anyone break their neck more than once?  And not be a paraplegic, that is.

Ok.  Just did.  He was injured during a game in 2010 and was taken to the hospital and was tested for a cervical spine fracture, which, fortunately, was negative.  But he was placed on injured reserve by the Lions and released the following year.

Couldn't find any information about broken necks.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand:  Go Rams, Saints, Colts and Patriots!

The Colts and my Cowboys lost. Both teams looked really good but they are done for this year.

Well, I would think so. It's 18 years ago...though Brady/Bill are a fixture, most of those Patriots are gone, too.

'94-'95 season when they left LA (OC actually), ultimately becoming the 'greatest show on turf under Kurt Warner', who still btw announces for Ram games today.

Die hard Ram fan always a fan!

Nope. You're wrong...Rams (15-3) have a better record than New England (13-5) going into the Super Bowl.

The Pats were losers for a long time and were NEVER on TV out West and the
Cowboys were on TV nearly every week. From 1966 to the early 1980's the
Cowboys were the class of the NFL.

When the Patriots got good, there rest of their division was really mediocre for
over a decade.

Um.  In 1965, 66 and 67 the Packers were the class of the NFL.  Coached by a little known coach.   Someone named 'Lombardi', or something like that.

Vince Lombardi was named NFL coach of the year '59 and '61.

Vince Lombardi was named NFL coach of the year '59 and '61.

He was?  Great book read:  "When Pride Still Mattered" by David Maraniss.  Lombardi was raised by an immigrant butcher in Sheepshead Bay.   A little known fact about him is that Richard Nixon was set to approach him to be his running mate for President, then found out that Lombardi was a Democrat.   The Wisconsin Democratic Party, upon hearing that, made sure that Lombardi was hooked up with some investments that made him a semi-wealthy man.   His business partner's son was a fraternity brother of mine in college.

Another tidbit is that after MacArthur's dismissal in Korea, he was residing in the Waldorf Astoria in NYC.  As assistant coach of the Army team, Lombardi used to take films down to MacArthur so he could watch the Army games in his hotel room.   Be interesting to be a fly on the wall of those conversations.

Oh, one more thing:  Lombardi was later an assistant coach of the New York Giants.   He ran the offense under Jim Lee Howell.   Now, especially for 2TallBill:   Lombardi was the offensive genius who made that team work.   But his counterpart on defense was also as impressive:   Some former defensive back who became an assistant coach named Tom Landry.   Howell was quoted as saying:  "All I have to worry about is putting air in the footballs."

Pretty much a boring game for me, as I like offensive shoot outs rather than defensive struggles.

Edelman was really great however in his ability to continually get open.

Just out of college and before the Army called me up for the growing conflict in Vietnam, I worked briefly in California on math modeling of ground water.  One Sunday I went to the Coliseum to see the Rams play, quarterbacked by one of your distant cousins.  Loved the helmets.   Rams lost.

You were wearing diapers, assuming you existed.

Interesting venue.  I splurged on a good seat and saw two unimportant but recognizable movie actors.

Patriots star Rob Gronkowski announces retirement
Quote
After making the biggest play of Super Bowl LIII to help the New England Patriots win another championship, Gronkowski is calling it a career. He announced he is retiring after nine NFL seasons.
Gronkowski was a dominant force at tight end for the Patriots, though years of significant injuries seemed to finally take a toll last season. He still had enough left for one more playoff run before stepping away.
And with his retirement, we can start Gronkowski’s countdown clock for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
