Discriminacion en Rusia?
« on: April 02, 2013, 02:52:42 PM »

They shoot them on sight. 2 bodies still haven't been found.  :P

But seriously, a very subjective question, YB.

Luckily my wife's entire family lived in Uzbekistan for years and loved it  before having to come back to Russia when the Soviet states broke off. Their family will likely participate and put in their opinion. I was the unanimous choice - 100% and there were 3 RMs writing her including, Europeans, Aussies and of course, AMs...

Many RWs in LA are married to Latinos. When you go to Russia, just be reasonably careful. Don't get caught at night alone.

YB,
I have had problems in bigger cities in Russia, not as much as from girls but the police that hound me constantly to see my papers....at times it could be every block when walking. It does wear on some girls.....
BTW...with my California 'tan' I don't 'look' Russian.  JME

How easy is it to confuse you with the Chechen or a person from the -stan? Your resemblance with these people will define your success to get introduced to neo-nazi culture in Russia.

I will share a brief story (told it before on this forum). In summer 2007 met in Kiev with a person whom I knew in USA. We spent some time sight-seeing in downtown, and then he needed to buy bus ticket to Moldova, I volunteered to escort and help him, so we went to the bus station together. He is an American, born and raised in California. One of his parents is Chinese. He looks Asian, but doesn't have any foreign (non-American) accent, nor habits. So we came to the bus station, and the moment we enter the building, two policemen approach us and ask for IDs. He has the copy of his passport, but not the actual passport - because he was warned it would be too dangerous to carry it around. They are not satisfied with the copy and want to take him (and me) to the police station in the basement of the bus station building. They also demand me of my ID. Several policemen surrounding us and trying to escort us down grim and unwelcoming stairs, knowing Ukrainian policemen - their built-in calculators are already estimating profit from the asian-looking foreigner and his female "escort". Not a pleasant situation.I tell them that I am a Ukrainian citizen, and according to Ukrainian law they cannot request my ID and I am not required to carry an ID with me at all times. They can only request a person ID if there is an open case, and there is investigation, they have profile of a person they are looking for and I match that profile. Also, it is illegal to hold me in any way, or escort me to the police station unless they have the court order or another solid reason to do it. Probably because I was scared, I actually remembered the specific titles of the legislation which were regulating the situation like ours. They tried to argue with me. I requested them to tell me which legislation they are using as a guidance. Naturally, they had no idea, just kept repeating "you should present your ID". I kept repeating "this is illegal. I do not have to carry my ID, and you cannot request for ID unless you have the investigation going." Then my husband came by and said "look, we aren't going to pay you any "fines." And you have no legal right to keep my wife. So the most you can do - keep this American person (again, illegally), I will go to his hotel, take his passport, bring it here, and 30 minutes later you will have to release him and he will likely file some sort of complaint. Do you want it?"
They thought for a bit, and let us all go.

Clear case of racial profiling. I think you won't lack of similar experience while in Russia.
