Budget for 3-4 month stay in Kyiv
« Reply #25 on: January 29, 2021, 09:13:40 PM »
I will change the parameters slightly.

An acceptable/decent 1 bedroom apartment in either Podil or Pechersk will cost from $800 to 2,000.-  for a six month rental.

Assuming you can figure out making coffee and breakfast you will need about $20 to $40.- a day to eat. You can do this for less but one needs to understand the markets and grocery stores. Grocery stores are quite close to Western models.

With a bit of common sense and luck you can find a dedicated driver/taxi driver. Plan on about $30 for a quick round trip to the other bank. Using the Metro and Underground is not that difficult and you can save funds there .

Eating out can be from $10 to over $40 per person depending on location and level of where you eat.

I chose O'Briens Irish Bar / Restaurant's menu

I haven't eaten there in a hundred years but they make the most
mediocre food that I've eaten in the country of Ukraine. It's an expat
place, so you might find fellow English speakers but the food is crap
which is par for the course for Irish food in general but the beer is
fine (which you would find in Ireland as well).

I highly recommend the "when in Rome philosophy" and to eat
what the natives eat as much as possible. I also highly recommend
not eating Irish food unless absolutely necessary.

In the FSU they don't know how to cook beef, especially steak. I
usually bought some ham or bacon for breakfast and sandwiches
several jugs of juice, several gallons of bottled water, eggs, cheese
potatoes and a few spices, milk, mayonnaise, butter and bread.

I always buy a real knife (or two). None of the apartments that I've
ever rented had a knife that you can chop or cut with.

I can cook a vast array of foods from basic ingredients and I would
frequently do that to the delight of many FSU ladies that I entertained.

I usually kept had a bottle or two of sweet champagne around and one
of those two liter bottles of beer.

If you are spending a lot of time in the FSU I would recommend buying
yourself a few towels and a set of sheets for your bed. The apartments
that I rented always had crap. I also buy a non stick pan, otherwise you
will be scraping the pan after every meal.

Also quite interesting was the bottom sheet for the bed.
They rarely were full enough to tuck under the mattresses.
So just a sheet lying on top of mattress that looked like it had been in a wrestling match in the morning . . . even after one person slept alone there.

The above are valid points and good suggestions. Unfortunately there is no Bed Bath & Beyond in Kyiv.

What kind of budget are we looking at?

I'd like to get a 1 bedroom apartment, eat out 4-5 times per week. Get a gym membership, have internet, cell phone. Uber around 2-3 times per week, take mass transportation. Take a few trips to the Black Sea, Lviv, and other natural wonders of Ukraine.

I'd like to take time off from work, refresh and find someone extraordinary so hopefully wine and dine up to 10 people during that time. Maybe one or two trips to Italy, France with someone special. I'm hoping I can be able to do 3-4 months - 6 months if possible. I might make some vlogs about my stay and travels.

I'm making plans for June 2021.

If you would like some information on Lviv I live here, I can help you.
You do not need $4000 a month in this country. Unless you want to take a crap on a solid gold toilet. But you might be that kind of baller.

But read again.

He didn't say he was going to come and stay only in Ukraine during this trip.

Match up his plan with your numbers; not only living in Ukraine with your numbers.

And even if he were going to live only in Ukraine for a month or so, he wouldn't have your live in gal or wife to be helping him with food, etc., and he wouldn't be obtaining long term rental prices, etc.

Too often here, those with long term living experiences try to sugar coat what will actually be encountered by short term inexperienced visitors.

I don’t have a woman here. I didn’t come to Ukraine Because of a woman. I came to Lviv because it’s a beautiful city in a country I have enjoyed visiting multiple times and decided to stay permanently. 😊

OK, thanks for clarification and update.

I hope you remain happy there.

I never got around to visiting in Lviv, but I hope to go there with my UW wife some time after this Covid mess is done.

If you love old beautiful architecture you will like Lviv.  It's a great city to just walk and enjoy the view. 😊

I loved it :) While it's nice to see some of the old buildings renovated to be honest I most enjoy those ones a bit off the city centre that are left unrenovated, they just look so rustic and full of charm just like that, kind of medieval feeling can almost feel yourself back in a different time period.

All of the eating out places in the city centre are great, load of them themed with a story of intrigue. All done in the last ten years or so for tourism to bring jobs to the city. Not saying they are based totally on bs but I think they are playing on the historical goings on of the place as much as possible.

In summer the surrounding hills give me the feel of a kind of LA sort of atmosphere also. It's a very enjoyable place to spend time. My only hang up is that after spending a couple of weeks there it can feel a bit like a tourist trap like many other touristy areas in that it can suffer from being too touristy. After a while you notice the same goings on repeating themselves, the same tours repeating over, same tourist haunts, people photographing around the touristy statues, buying in gift shops, etc, etc. That can all take away from it all a bit as it can end up feeling a bit like being in a film set. It's great they've created employment for people but I would kind of prefer somewhere of that era architecture but a bit less touristy if I was going to live there long term I think.

On the horizon as you've probably seen are the concrete tower blocks where most of the residents live. So the place didn't escape the Soviet era of construction completely.

I absolutely agree with this. By far, my favorite city in Ukraine....
