How proficient are we in the English language
« on: April 06, 2015, 11:22:39 AM »
Recenly I talked to a guy who mentioned that his English vocabulary is very high. I don't recall the exact figure, though.
At the moment, one of my biggest goals in life is to master English to the point where I will be able to express in words the most subtle things. Just the way I can do in Russian.

I went online and found this test to check my own vocabulary

http://testyourvocab.com/

My result was 18500 word families. According to the test creators, a native speaker's vocabulary would be 20000 word families.

There is room for improvement!  ;D

35,100 words, but I am a native speaker and, although I don't like to brag, was graduated from junior high school in the top half of my class.

Not bad for a non-native speaker.

Well done guys!   :-*  :-*

That test had a link on another one that had 100 questions where in order to find a meaning of a word, we had a choice of four possible descriptions of it. I have done that other test, and my result was thirteen thousand something. Does anyone know the link on that other test?

I was surprised there were a lot of words there I had never heard of.

Many of those are Latin or Latin-derived words, seldom used except by VERY learned people :D.

You beat me Lily but it's not always about how many words you know, it's how you put them together that counts and with the 54 words I know, I can go toe to toe with some of the strongest debaters.

I checked all words for fun and 45,000 is max score. There are over 1,000,000 words in the English language so don't feel bad about what you know because when we look at the big picture, we all know very little.
Fund the audits, spread the word and educate people, write your politicians and other elected officials. Stay active in the fight to save our country. Over 220 generals and admirals say we are in a fight for our survival like no other time since 1776.

That number includes the English words that were ever printed/spoken over a period of some 500 years ;).

What a vocabulary test measures really is a person's:

- Education
- Linguistic proficiency
- Memory ;D

I'd bet more than half the words in the English language were invented after you were born. Medical, scientific, and new technology words have contributed to the explosion of new words in the modern era.

Profanity does count. For those who say it doesn't, F'ck all y'all. Watch the video below and see how important profanity is in our language.

Not really, most of them are of Greek/Latin origin, new ones are comparatively few in number although used more frequently nowadays. One should not confuse lexicon (vocabulary) with usage ;).

Larry, there's only two words in the English language you need to know and you'll get along with all women just fine. Write this down if you must but never forget "Yes Dear!"
