Breaking Point: The War for Democracy in Ukraine
« on: March 19, 2017, 05:12:31 PM »
For those here that have not lived through this period this is a visual record of recent history  and will help many understand a lot mote of current day Ukraine ,and in particular --the people of Ukraine.
I highly recommend reading the comments in the link and watching the documentary itself. There is a couple of telling comments made--Ukrainians wanted everything in the story-- but of course it is impossible with the constraints of time -- but the attempt is to try and tell as much as possible.
For me personally -- I have felt incredible emotions and great humility in this period of Ukraine's history.
Don't take my word for it--watch and read please-- thankyou.

QUOTE
"Breaking Point captures the spirit of Maidan and of Ukraine itself -- a story that few in the West pay attention to, much less comprehend. Perhaps through this film, we can understand why the success or failure of Ukraine’s stubborn resistance to Putin’s annexation and invasion will determine the future of Europe and the Trans Atlantic alliance. Breaking Point comes at a crucial crossroads as Russia is counting on “Ukraine fatigue” and Europe’s commercial class’s desire to return to “business as usual” and to brush aside the 10,000 Ukrainian deaths, not counting the thousands of Russian soldiers lying in clandestine graves. The film rightly emphasizes the sad fact that the Ukrainian people have fought this battle on their own and on our behalf. Unsaid is how little NATO and the US have contributed. Breaking Point’s directors let the stunning images of Maidan, the siege of Donetsk airport, the Illovaisk massacre, the gruesome wreckage of MH17, and the touching testimonies of Ukrainian volunteers and their families tell the story."

Breaking Point: The War for Democracy in Ukraine — a documentary by three-time Academy Award winning director Mark Harris and acclaimed Ukrainian director Oles Sanin.
Breaking Point is documentary film at its best. The ongoing War for Democracy in Ukraine portrayed in Mark Harris’s documentary film, Breaking Point, is powerful, cogent and persuasive insight into the dilemma Europe and the world now face: a future of protracted war, or the possibility for peaceful, prosperous, rule of law based sovereign nations living in harmony with each other.

The invasion, continued subversion, death and destruction inflicted on Ukraine by Putin’s government is a violation of many solemn international conventions agreed to by Russia. If Russia’s destructive aggressions so graphically shown in Breaking Point are allowed to stand unchallenged, a return to the Cold War or worse will result.

Breaking Point shows the moral and physical courage of the Ukrainians of the Maidan Revolution ridding the nation of a corrupt, oligarchical government. The people of Ukraine have chosen a democratic path. Putin’s government has chosen illegal military aggression to dominate Ukraine and intimidate neighboring states. Whether Putin’s war will prevail or whether the Ukrainian people will be able to choose their own destiny, it is to hoped will be the subject of a subsequent documentary.

This is a discussion on the making of this film --for those interested in a wider understanding it is recommeded to watch.

2016   -- Initial release: October 2016

Release Date: 14 February 2017 (USA)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6561394/

Santa Barbara Independent Review, January 2017:

Foreign empires, beginning with Genghis Khan, have been invading Ukraine for centuries, drawn by fertile soil and oceans of wheat. Three years ago, Russian strongman Vladimir Putin did the same in response to the Maidan Uprising, the Ukrainian equivalent of Tiananmen Square. What started off as a peaceful protest against a corrupt government that did Putin’s bidding, turned violent when Putin dispatched troops to restore order.

BREAKING POINT provides a passionate and chilling look at how that uprising evolved with striking emotional insight into the psychology of mass movements. For a host of reasons, these events failed to seize the political imagination of mainstream America. In light of Donald Trump’s relationship with Putin, it’s clear we should have been paying closer attention.

In light of Donald Trump’s relationship with Putin . . .

They have no 'relationship.'
Have never met even.

Trump said he thought Putin was a strong leader.

From that simple statement (perhaps repeated) came the fake news that Trump and Putin were friends.

After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

The Odessa tragedy: bloody trail of "russian spring"
A lot of confusion exists about events in Odessa --much quite deliberately promoted by the Kremlin  + plus trolls.
This is a substantial story and for those with any interest in Ukraine whatsoever you need to see this-- and read. It will give a good understanding of how brave Ukraine has-- and is being in standing up to Russia  -- to achieve a free and independent democracy in Ukraine.
Make no mistake--Ukrainians are doing it hard this very day- as a result of Putin's Russia -- this can help you understand the will and intent of Ukrainian people.
Watch this-- preferably after to docu above.

The Odesa tragedy: bloody trail of the “Russian spring” – new film by human rights group

2016/11/24 - 19:41 • NEWS

“The Odesa tragedy: bloody trail of the ‘Russian spring'”, a new hour-long video released by an Odesa-based human rights group, tells why the Russian-orchestrated uprising in the city in the aftermath of the Euromaidan revolution failed, saving it from the fate of the Russian-backed puppet “republics” in Ukraine’s East. By collecting witness testimonies and expert analyses, the group reconstructs the tragic events that led to the confrontation between the Euromaidan- and Antimaidan-supporting Odesites, which ended in a fire in the local Trade Unions building on 2 May 2014 and took the lives of 48 people.
After the Euromaidan protesters won and disgraced Ukrainian President Yanukovych fled in February 2014, Russia started a military takeover of Crimea. In parallel, pro-Russian marches and rallies with Russian flags, whose participants demanded protection against the “Kyiv junta” started taking place throughout southeastern Ukraine. This brought a war to Donbas, while Odesa still lives in peace. The Kremlin’s “Russian Spring” project to tear away eight south-eastern regions of Ukraine from the rest of the country failed. But in the process, a tragic fire took place on 2 May 2014, taking the life of 42 people and giving birth to a myth of “Ukrainian fascists” burning Russian-speakers alive that dominates Russian state media to this day and was even the topic of a “traveling exposition” demonstrated in at least Poland and Hungary.

The film, created by the 2nd of May group, a coalition of experts and journalists seeking an unbiased investigation into the fire, provides much-needed clarity on the events that prevented the creation Kremlin’s puppet “Odesa People’s Republic” but led to the tragic deaths of ordinary people.

The Odesites caught on with the attitudes in Kyiv and created their own Euromaidan protests. Their opponents were organized in an Antimaidan camp. On 18-19 February 2014, when government riot police were shooting protesters in Kyiv, the Odesa Euromaidan held a protest with the message “don’t shoot” to their local authorities. 300 thugs hired by the government attacked the protesters, and 12 journalists were injured – a shock for the tolerant seaport, in which different viewpoints, religions, ethnicities coexisted without trouble for centuries.

The Odessa tragedy: bloody trail of "russian spring"

Published on 17 Nov 2016
What happened in Odessa in late winter and early spring of 2014 was identical to the events in Donetsk and Lugansk regions: “Russian marshes” and rallies with Russian flags whose participants demanded protection against “Kiev junta” and sought to establish Odessa People’s Republic. It brought a war to Donbass, while Odessa still lives in peace. Kremlin’s Russian Spring project to tear away eight south-eastern regions of Ukraine from the rest of the country failed. Why did it happen? And what happened on May 2, 2014? Participants of those events are now talking about it. The documentary is based on the independent investigation carried out by May 2 Group.

This article needs reading by all-- it is a clear condemnation of Putin's propaganda and distortions. For those not here at the time-- many on this forum followed, argued the Kremlin line unquestioned -- and nothing changes their views,.
The danger of a lie repeated often enough that it becomes and "alternative" fact is plain to see -- and especially so when perpetrated by people in high office.

Putin and Russia Today continue incitement to kill through lies about non-existent Odesa ‘massacre’

Lies for Western consumption

The concentration here on RT or Russia Today is not for want of examples from the Russian-based media.  It is, however, of particular concern that a Kremlin-funded TV channel openly broadcast in all western countries should be allowed to so grossly mislead its audience.  RT, it should be noted, is regularly provided as a Russian channel, alongside reputable news channels in hotels and other public places.  How are audiences who only dimly know where Odesa even is to understand the toxic lies that they are being fed?

For those of us that have an interest in Ukraine ( and those that want to misrepresent what actually has happened) there are some articles that need reading. Often ovelooked is what actually happened post Maidan -- not just with the invasion of Crimea by Russia-- but the attempt to destabilise and take over the whole country.Events moved at an incredible pace -- and much changed very fast in this time --particularly the attitude of Ukrainians and the pride in their country.
In the spring of 2014, Ukraine faced seemingly overwhelming odds as Russia’s surprise offensive claimed Crimea and then spread into eastern regions of the Ukrainian mainland. There was an air of dreadful inevitability as town after town fell to Russian hybrid forces and their local collaborators. Ukraine’s threadbare military was hopelessly outmatched and clearly unable to defend the country. By mid-April, many in Kyiv were preparing for the imminent arrival of Putin’s “little green men” in the Ukrainian capital itself.

UKRAINE'S DUNKIRK MOMENT: Volunteer miracle of 2014 should play a far more prominent role in Ukraine's nation-building efforts
Everyman spirit that saved Ukraine from Putin’s partition plan contains a powerful unifying message that can serve the country for generations to come

Then something incredible happened – ordinary Ukrainians took up arms and fought back. The volunteer battalions who helped bring the Russian advance to a halt were among the most ragtag formations in modern military history. Armed with whatever came to hand and often dressed in mismatching items of uniform, these largely untrained citizen soldiers were in the vanguard as Ukraine liberated town after town in late spring and early summer 2014. Behind them stood an entire nation of volunteers working to feed, fund, and outfit Ukraine’s improvised army. Together, they did enough to contain the Kremlin insurgency and convince Moscow that further escalation would prove prohibitively costly in terms of both blood and treasure. It was a military miracle more dramatic than the most far-fetched of Hollywood blockbusters, and it saved Ukraine from impending extinction as an independent state

Interesting  story and observations.
Quite a few are writing these days of the evolution of Ukrainians belief in their country . I aim this particularly at all those that back in 2014 who had so little comprehension of what was actually happening in Ukraine that we kept hearing that Ukrainians would never fight Russians . Then-- Russia would roll over all Ukraine etc .
As this writer observes -- Ukraine is still in desperate need of military aid to realise it's full potential --maybe soon the west will wake up and realise Ukraine is the frontline of the defence against Russia and the danger it represents to the world at large.
Quotes are  translated --
"Ukrainian troops are still largely dependent on non-governmental and volunteer organizations that deliver advanced personal protective equipment, first-aid kits, body armor, uniforms, food and clean water."

The war on the Donbass: "This is the most terrible type of battle I have not encountered, even when I was serving in troops of special operations in Iraq and Afghanistan," an American

Despite the lack of money, the Ukrainian Army is now struggling even better than the US armed forces. I had the opportunity to observe joint Ukrainian-American training at Yavoriv military training ground. And the impression was that these Ukrainian soldiers should teach Americans to fight, and not vice versa. This in the Ukrainian army has many years of experience in conducting a hybrid war with Russia - a reflection of cyberattacks and targeted propaganda. Allies of Ukraine should learn from her in order to understand how the war with Russia will take place.

I saw a longer trailer - lots of scenes in the underground submarine labyrinth and entrance to Balaklava and Sevastopol ....and plenty of shots fired - remember how the take-over 'wasn't Russian personnel and peaceful'?

I read JayH's reports of how the Kremlin will be 'forced to hand back' Crimea and you realise that Putin has based his whole resurgence in popularity - and made Russians feel ' proud' - on this gamble

The destabilisation of Ukraine, Crimea being 'Russian' are masterpieces of diversion from economic woes and these are now down to  'the Western sanctions' in many folks eyes... 'part of a hard-ship to be endured'
