The banjo probably had its roots in Africa as it was developed by African slaves in Colonial America.  White people widely adapted it and I can not recall a black banjo player.

In keeping with the country-folk-bluegrass theme and also Kokopelli's  sample of Irish music and dance that featured Mr. Bojangles,  I am reminded of one of those songs spawned in one genre (American country) yet covered by singers from many disparate musical styles.

While the lyrics tell a sad story, the melody imparts life to the somber words and gives a measure of respect and pride to America's indigent.  It describes a true encounter.

The writer of the song, Jerry Walker, says he was inspired while in a New Orleans jail for public intoxication in 1965.  In his jail cell  "...he met a homeless white man who called himself 'Mr. Bojangles' ...  He had been arrested as part of a police sweep of indigent people that was carried out following a high-profile murder. The two men and others in the cell chatted about all manner of things, but when Mr. Bojangles told a story about his dog, the mood in the room turned heavy. Someone else in the cell asked for something to lighten the mood, and Mr. Bojangles obliged with a tap dance."

Charlie Pride.  Good catch.  I don't know much about C&W music.   Is he the one playing the banjo?  Probably, as he is an accomplished  musician and singer.

After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

IMHO, nobody conducts Beethoven like von Karajan -

I don't know much about C&W music.

I'm surprised you don't know much about C&W music, coming from Tennessee.  Just from diffusion.  The first song above is from a Nashville country/pop group, BTW.

My father loved C&W (still does) gospel, and rock, so I had a lot of exposure to that music growing up.

Here is one he used to sing to us as kids -

and this one, which I think was a hit when he was just entering his teens.  It took me quite a while to find on youtube for him.  The kids downloaded it on his Ipod for him.  The advantages of grandchildren (they downloaded over 300 songs for him).

I always liked Roy Clark's banjo playing.

However, this is my favourite performance of his.  I think he performs this better than anyone I've heard, including Charles Aznavour.  I think you have to be of a certain age to appreciate this -

I always loved this one.

Artistically speaking, Giorgio Moroder is the 'black sheep' of a family of woodcarvers from Ortisei in Val Gardena (http://www.gardena.org/summer/eng/exib.htm).

Their family company is Moroder Goffredo & Figli: I still have a number of bookends and statuettes carved by Goffredo in the 1930s, since Ortisei was then a favourite holiday resort of my grandfather's.
