Welcome Sergey!

This topic seems to appear often. Usually the process is like this:

* Guy wants an electronic translator to help him to understand Russian more easily.
* Some (a few) enterprising guys will want to learn the language (usually Russian, but sometimes Ukrainian).
* Once the guy finds a lady, he often wants to help her to learn English.
* When she finally arrives here (in the USA or Britain), the guy needs to ease her into the language - and also needs to help her communicate with her family, so the Russian stickers or Russian keyboard become important.

Anyway, I think you see - there are LOTS of reasons that guys here will want to hear from you.

I am glad you are here.

- Dan

One specific question I have for you is on translator programs such as Prompt. Everyone recognizes that machine (computer) translation can be a problem - but - when both people make an effort to write with correct spelling and grammar, the computer translators seem to do a good (often even a great) job of translation. What is your experience with these computer translators?

Dan,

My experience with Promt is this. I'd like to show you an example of a machine translation - I entered your message above to Promt, it translated it to Russian, and I reversed it back to English (EN->RU->EN). Here is what I got:

What your experience with these computer translators?

As you can see, one could probably understand 80-100% of the original intent, but the output would still require some correction. So in my opinion, the machine transplation is useful for those who know both languages, but need some tools to speed up transplation (for example, we translated a large technical document, it was a 100-page manual for Samsung), and it took us much less time to correct the syntax instead of just doing a human translation.

Cheers,

Sergey

Yes, the machine translator are not perfect, but again, could be useful in some cases. If you get e-mail from your Russian girlfriend, I think the online transpators would be just fine to get the idea

:D

Sergey,

One of our members (I think it was Albert), asked about translation modules for products like the Palm Pilot. I don't know if you have any experience with those, but you might want to find his post and see if you can help him.

Cheers!

Dan,

I already reply to that thread. As you know PalmOS PDAs are limited in memory, so any translation software would be very limited. The translation dictionaries are specialized devices and they have a database of 200,000-1,000,000 words and cost between $100-$500. AS you mentioned on other thread, we are the distributors of Ectaco products that could be found on our site:

Yes, as a small endorsement - my wife has been using their products for quite some time. Initially I purchased a small Ectaco English <=> Russian electronic translator, but it suffered a failure after a couple of years and many trips back and forth to Ukraine. When we contacted Ectaco, they offered a discount on the V6, and that is what she has been using for the past several years. She is a straight-A university student, and she uses the V6 for insuring her understanding of many university-level words.

FWIW

Dan,

Just an update that our site was for a long time called RussianKeyboards.com. And I appreciate your endorsement here as well.

Hey Sergey..

Yeah, Dan hasn't been around for awhile either that I've seen.

I was almost thinking that Russian Keyboards was a musician.
Silly me :P

Stick around more often next time..............
