Curious name, meaning pelagic - of the sea - in Greek (from πέλαγος). Any connections?

Yes, the name came to Russia from Greece

The best-known work by Alessandro Marcello
Alessandro's younger brother Benedetto also wrote an oboe concerto, with a distinct Vivaldian flavour in its Adagio:

He also wrote a Il pianto e i riso delle quattro stagioni (The weeping and laughter of the four seasons) 8 years after Vivaldi's more famous piece:

Julie London was better known for her interpretation of:

above with Tom Ewell in the 1956 movie The Girl Can't Help It
memorable because its rather weak plot was basically an excuse for 18 numbers by the rock stars of the day like, for instance:

In this country this famed Italian composer  and director is still referred to as the one written the soundtrack for "La Piovra" television series, which was incredibly successful in the FSU.

Movies don't need dialogs when music by Ennio Morricone talks

Enjoy

My favorite one

Ghost of Moon Goddess,

I feel embarrassed to say that I recall Cinema Paradiso as a splendid film yet do not recall the music.    :(   As per the Russian saying, I guess a bear stepped on my ear when a baby.

Another well-known composer was Milan-born Nino Rota (1911-1979), who wrote most if not all the scores for Fellini's films, such as Amarcord (Romagna's dialect for: "I remember"):

But he's probably best known for this (Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1974):

So ghost-ess...

Put on your white sombrero

A cold spell grips Ukraine... Brrr... And worse is to come  :'(

"Shivering, frozen mid the frosty snow in biting, stinging winds; running to and fro to stamp one's icy feet, teeth chattering in the bitter chill... We tread the icy path slowly and cautiously, for fear of tripping and falling. We feel the chill north winds coarse through the home despite the locked and bolted doors… this is winter, which nonetheless brings its own delights". Lines from Vivaldi's  Sonnet describing the moods of Winter "portrayed" in his «Winter» concerto No.4 in f minor.

 Allegro non molto
"Aggiacciato tremar trа neri algenti
 Al Severo Spirar d' orrido Vento,
 Correr battendo i piedi ogni momento;
 E pel Soverchio gel batter i denti;"
 Largo
"Passar al foco i di quieti e contenti
 Mentre la pioggia fuor bagna ben cento"
 Allegro
"Caminar Sopra 'l giaccio, e а passo lento
 Per timor di cader gersene intenti;
 Gir forte Sdruzziolar, cader а terra
 Di nuove ir Sopra 'l giaccio e correr forte
 Sin ch' il giaccio si rompe, e si disserra;
 Sentir uscir dalle ferrate porte
 Sirocco Borea, e tutti i Venti in guerra
 Quest' й 'l verno, mа tal, che gioja apporte."

Venetian carnival masks 8). Probably the most curious is il Medico della Peste (the plague doctor):

Quote
The Medico Della Peste with its long beak is one of the most bizarre and recognisable of the Venetian masks. The striking design has a macabre history originating from 17th century French physician Charles de Lorme who adopted the mask together with other sanitary precautions while treating plague victims. The mask is white consisting of a hollow beak and round eye holes covered with crystal discs creating a bespectacled effect.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venetian_mask

The hollow beak was stuffed with medicinal herbs supposed to provide a barrier against the noxious effluvia from the visited patients :-\, in town and on the quarantine island of Lazzaretto Vecchio.

Ma le strade di Venezia non si chiamano strade ;) - but Venice's streets are not called that, since they are mostly waterways (http://www.russianwomendiscussion.com/index.php?topic=6383.msg168334#msg168334).

Incidentally, street, strasse, etc. all derive from the Latin designation of a paved road (via strata), so called because it consisted of layers of different materials:

On important Roman ways, the summum dorsus (top back) usually consisted of juxtaposed basalt slabs, called basolatum:

Finer materials (gravel, sand, etc.) were used for the lower layers of radus and pavimentum, to ensure good drainage into the underlying base ground (fossa, i.e. excavation trench, pit).

So the Venetian version of this song might be called "Hit the waterway, Giacomo" ;D ?

Good try, but "Ciapa el canal, Zàcomo" is more likely ;), and would have sounded a bit like this (Eat and drink):

The group in the photo is standing in front of a squero, the boatyard where gondolas are still built nowadays, a process requiring about a year.
