Turkish military has taken over the government
« on: July 15, 2016, 03:03:18 PM »
The Turkish military has taken over the government and imposed martial law, according to an announcement read by an anchor on state broadcaster TRT.
The statement was made on behalf of the "Peace in the Nation" council, the announcer said. "The political administration that has lost all legitimacy has been forced to withdraw," the anchor said.
Earlier, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim told broadcaster A Haber that some military units have attempted a coup. Yildirim vowed the coup attempt would not succeed.
He told state news agency Anadolu the coup is "an attempt against democracy and the will of the people. Those who attempted this will pay the heaviest price."
There have been no independent verification of the claims by the military or the government. It is unclear who is in charge in Turkey.
The military has issued statements, which have been published in some Turkish media, and not others, and reported by the Reuters news agency, claiming it has "fully seized control of Turkey" to maintain democratic order, that rule of law must remain a priority and international relations must remain. The statements have not been distributed through regular web channels.

There is a history of Turkish military taking over government for some period of time.

Often there is some concern that the elected leaders are straying from the concept of separation of church and state.

Protection of this separation has been a goal of the military since the founding of modern Turkey under Ataturk in 1923.

The coup has failed.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

Erdogan Lands in Istanbul as Leaders Claim Coup Foiled

Turkey’s leaders said they have largely quelled an attempted military coup, after army officers claimed to have seized power in the country. Clashes persisted in major cities as tanks blockaded roads, soldiers fought with police and warplanes bombed the parliament in Ankara.

The army faction behind the rebellion said in an e-mailed statement earlier that it
had seized power to restore freedom and democracy. They briefly took over state-run
TV to broadcast a declaration of martial law, saying the government had lost its
legitimacy. The network appeared to have been restored to government control.
But CNN-Turk, an affiliate of the U.S. news channel, said soldiers entered its
headquarters in Istanbul.

The coup has failed.

A perfectly organized coup.  To fail.  And the winner is:  Erdogan.  As he intended to be when he set up the coup in the first place.

What makes you say that?

The author below seems to think the coup was a good thing. He says the current president of Turkey is a hard liner and bringing Islam into his government. I knew Turkey was buying ISIS oil. Could be the current government is getting radical. Western governments seem to be supporting the current government in Turkey though.

Seems to me it is/was what's known in the vernacular as a 'Colonel's Rebellion'. I don't think there was too many General Officer Staff involved or it would have been better organized/executed.

Watching some of the vid footage coming out of Turkey the Turkish military that were involved didn't have their hearts in it.

That video of the tank being held at bay by civilians said it all for me.

This will give Erdogan what he needs to push Islam back into the main stream of Turkish politics though. There won't be much of the secular military hierarchy left to stop him after the purge.

Many commentators are now wondering if the failed "military coup" may have really been arranged by Erdogan himself, to impose a more strict regime on Turkey and dispose of any remaining dissenters 8).

The first thing that successful military coups did in the past, in Turkey and elsewhere, was to remove and silence the current power holders - by arresting or killing them.

Erdogan's airplane was intercepted in flight over Marmaris by 2 supposedly 'rebel' F-16s, whose pilots however refrained from shooting it down - as could be expected under the circumstances :-\.

Putin is smiling. The Turkish pilots who shot down the Russian military jet that crossed Turkish airspace were arrested. I wonder if Erdogan will hand the pilots over to Russia. Hundreds of military officers were arrested among thousands of others. Turkish citizens should be very afraid to speak out against Erdogan right now.

Should give great pause to the military people who are protecting the current leaders . . . today.

They might be needed for sacrifice another day.

I was hoping for a successful coup, as I believe Turkey under current leaders is headed for an Islamic state a la Iran.

Turkey's president is closing over 2000 private schools, charities, foundations, trade unions, universities and medical institutions over suspected links to the Gulen movement. I guess he wants to advance his country in the right direction by eliminating institutions that promote violence in his country.

If he starts ordering that the ever present pictures and statues of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk be taken down there will be a civil war.  Atatürk is probably doing summersaults in his tomb right now..

The coup attempt was so weak, some think it was a set up so Erdogan could grab more power. I doubt there were even 2000 people participating in the coup and now Erdogan wants to shut down over 2000 institutions and purge the military. Things that make you go "Hmmmm". Looks like NATO has a very powerful and unstable member in it's ranks.

I guess the number depends on which definition of 'unstable' is used..

Half a year ago Turkey shot down a Russian plane and there were a war of words between the leaders of both nations. They applied sanctions against each other. Now Erdogan is thanking Russia for unconditional support for helping him overcome a coup attempt. What did Russia do to help? Now Erdogan will go to Moscow next month to forge an alliance with Russia. Two guys bitterly fighting months ago now act like best buddies who have each others back. I wonder if Putin has some of Erdogan's emails and dark secrets too.
