Tajikistan Trivia

Q: In what country do most ethnic Tajiks live?

A: According to the CIA factbook and Wikipedia, there are more Tajiks in Afghanistan than in Tajikistan. Tajiks make up one of the largest minority groups in Uzbekistan, too.

Q: How is Tajikistan spelled in Russian Cyrillic?

A: Таджикистан. As there is no letter for "j" in Cyrillic, the letters D (д) and (ж) are combined to form a sound somewhat similar to an English J.

Q: What city is the capital of Tajikistan?

A: Dushanbe (Душанбе), population 779,000 according to 2014 census figures.

Q: During a very dark Soviet period, what was this city's name?

A: Сталинобод (Stalinbad)

Q: Where can one see some really cool photos from Tajikistan?

A: Follow this link: http://www.ashkdahlen.com/index.php?id=166

Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are not only close geographically, and Tajiks make up one of the largest minority populations in Uzbekistan. Thus, this documentary on these two nations is very appropriate:

Unlike some neighbors, Tajikistan is not ruled by a dictatorial "president for life." Instead, the country is a constitutional presidential republic and the office of president is limited to two terms of seven years each. The current president is Emomalii Rahmon, and citizens are represented by a Supreme Assembly (parliament) with two chambers.

The government of Tajikistan isn't perfect, but neither is it as bad as with some neighboring nations. While unemployment remains high, and many men are forced to travel to Russia for work, one of the more promising programs of the government is the Tajikistan Development Gateway (TDG). This program is building a single information space (Internet) across the country with the goal of providing online access to every citizen. Creators believe that it will allow Tajiks to create and develop more employment opportunities with access to global markets and resources.

We must note however that the largest opposition to the ruling party is the Islamic Renaissance Party, and they do not support the worldwide integration of the Tajik people.

Nonetheless, this documentary from the BBC says that young Tajiks are experiencing a new sense of confidence about their future in Tajikistan:

You posted the link to this (and his companion documentary on the other "stans") three or four (?) years ago, and you made me a Simon Reeve fan.  He has a wonderful style, and I've really enjoyed these and his other adventures around the world (Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, The Equator, Australia, etc.).  He certainly doesn't hesitate to go where various others fear to tread, and brings an interesting perspective to so many places which you thought you knew, based on previous travelogues, but now find that you didn't know after all.

The Tajikistan city of Dushanbe, and the Colorado, USA, city of Boulder, are sister cities.

They took apart a Dushanbe teahouse piece by piece and shipped it to Boulder:

http://www.boulderteahouse.com/

"Completely built by hand without the use of any power tools, the Teahouse was constructed in Dushanbe, Tajikistan as a gift to their sister city, Boulder. It was disassembled, crated up, and sent halfway around the world to be rebuilt in Boulder as a symbol of friendship and cultural exploration. The elaborate and creative teahouse now sits as a reminder to the citizens of Boulder to value cultural diversity, global cooperation, and international friendship."

Another fun fact is Seattle was the first American city to have a sister city from the USSR which happens to be Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Both cities have parks dedicated to each other and a Facebook page of the association.
