Results for this question are derived from the following questions in the survey:

A007: What was your age when you married?
A021: What was your spouse's age when you married?

Segregation of results according to gender, and we can derive the average age difference in those responding to the survey.

So the question in the poll is:

What is the average age difference between men and women in cross-cultural marriages?

However, what I believe overall is 6-10 years older for the male. What I have is a wife who is 16 years younger. . .

I have a thought for a follow up question.  If these are what we think the overal average age gaps are - could we then follow up with everyone answering what the actual age difference is for each of us specifically.

It might be interesting to compare what we think is the average age gap compared to the actual numbers within own micro community.

Mark,

Take a look at this link -- http://www.russianwomendiscussion.com/index.php?topic=5455.0 - for a collection of polls taken over the years here.

And related to your specific question, I think this poll addresses it -- http://www.russianwomendiscussion.com/index.php?topic=1818.0 - and the table at the end (http://www.russianwomendiscussion.com/index.php?topic=1818.msg120775#msg120775) summarized the results.

In that particular poll, we have more than 100 members participate - which is a VERY good response rate.

When we look at the data from the survey, we have more than 2,000 responses, and from a MUCH broader range of respondents, hence, the survey should be a MUCH more accurate representation of the real situation.

Does this address what you were trying to get at?

Dan:

WOW!  What a treasury!  I'm new here, but I'm so impressed by what you've done.

I look forward to going through some of these.  This stuff fascinates me to no end.

Thanks!

Here is a table, taken from the Survey of Cross-Cultural Marriage and Divorce:

Age When Married Spouse's Age Avg. Age Difference
Men 40 30 9.8
Women 32 41 8.6

There are some significant differences from common perceptions.

What do y'all think about this? Surprised at anything?

Very interesting.  I would have thought the woman age would be 28 and the mans age at 40.  I expected 12 year difference.

To me looks like 27-32 age bracket is the way to go if your a guy 35-45.
Some of girls who work in the agencies I have talked to always shake their head when 40 year old men start dating the girls under 23 years old.

If this is from a cross section of cross cultural marriages then it would include many more types than just FSU and American which could decease the age gap a bit.  I have a feeling that RW and Asian women have a larger age gap than marriages from other areas.   It would be interesting if your data allows you to break down the data by region.

Darn, I feel like I can't get away from this stuff.  VWRW is taking statistics in school right now and my evenings are helping her with her homework on it analyzing the data from her survey and proofing her report.

Anyway it is interesting and you did a good job with it.

We do, indeed, have the data available to break this into country-specific or region-specific results.

There are MANY different analyses that may be conducted with the data gathered.

Re: The Women. There were more than 200 women who responded to the survey, and this includes ALL their results. Many of the women are from the FSU originally, but there are substantial numbers from Asia and from Latin America as well. The survey was distributed broadly and the target demographic was for ANYONE that is, or was, married to a cross-cultural spouse.

Re: The Men. More than 1500 validated respondents. Many are American, but there is significant representation from other countries.

I will get the country/region numbers together a bit later - but it may take some days for me to get to it.

Re: Differences in the Men and Women reported values. These results are expected - that there would be some differences when we segregate by gender and report on gender-specific results. They would be identical only if the men and women who responded were the same men and women who are, or were, married together.

What do you want to know next (THIRD question) ?

Maybe one of the following:

* Is it true that many mail order brides are really just green card girls and a large proportion of them will escape their loveless marriages as soon as they are able - once conditional permanent residency is lifted (2 years) ?

* Of those cross-cultural marriages ending in divorce, what were the reported significant contributors to the divorce ?

* What is the reported income levels of the men ?

Or...... take a look at the attached PDF which is a printable copy of the survey. From the questions, and responses, you find there - compose your own question you would like to see addressed. I make no promises that I will dedicate the time to produce all, or any, requested results - but I might  ;)

I would like to know the % of women who get married under 23 years old compared to women over 27 years old and are not divorced after 4 years.

But this one is good too -  Of those cross-cultural marriages ending in divorce, what were the reported significant contributors to the divorce ?

You could have seen them years ago (2008) :(. The link at the bottom of the page (RWD Projects - Cross-Cultural Marriage Statistics) points to a long-dead site.

I seem to remember doing a second survey from LWD a while back and one of the questions was what other tools would be helpful and it listed several ideas.  What ever became of the results of that survey?

Thank you.

Surveys in general, especially when it comes to relationships, are so arbitrary.
There is no science...mathematical equations...or steady criteria to evaluate a constant trend.

In other words it's a crapshoot.

There are certain standards one can set.
Family values...faith based belief and such that can improve marital success.
