Tonight I attended a concert at St. Mark's, one of Milan's oldest churches (first mentioned in 1254). The program was entirely devoted to Franz Joseph Haydn's music (Violin Concerto No. 3 in A major and Symphony No. 103 in E-flat major Drumroll).

This reminded me that I had yet to post references to his piano concertos, so I'll start his last, No. 11 in D:

His influence on Beethoven's first piano concertos is apparent ;).

.....

I was fortunate to attend the concert of classic music performed by Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra.
Haydn's "Farewell Symphony" was listed among other classic music compositions to be played.

Although some audience members ---- I guess the ones who did not know the idea behind the last movement during which musicians leave the stage one by one as their parts end ---- were  unsure of whether or not laughing would be appropriate,  they, fortunately, just followed the lead of the experienced  audience members around them and kept silent.

After the end of the composition the Orchestra and Haydn received standing ovations many times.

Yes, it was a sort of Occupy Wall Street in reverse ;D:
Quote
It was written for Haydn's patron, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, while he, Haydn and the court orchestra were at the Prince's summer palace in Eszterháza. The stay there had been longer than expected, and most of the musicians had been forced to leave their wives back at home in Eisenstadt, so in the last movement of the symphony, Haydn subtly hinted to his patron that perhaps he might like to allow the musicians to return home: during the final adagio each musician stops playing, snuffs out the candle on his music stand, and leaves in turn, so that at the end, there are just two muted violins left (played by Haydn himself and the concertmaster, Alois Luigi Tomasini). Esterházy seems to have understood the message: the court returned to Eisenstadt the day following the performance.

Your clip shows Daniel Barenboim conducting. He was apppointed general music director of our La Scala last year.

Sorry, but this song really just grabbed me. Deeply touched. I don't mean to sound like an emotional sap, but it is what it is, so big deal. Not until I watched P2's cover last night did I even realized this song actually existed. The original was by Damien Rice. WOW! The lyric just came home fast and furious. This one's for my incredibly wonderful ex-GF. You're always an angel to me...

My wife likes this song.....also it went over well with one of my classes of students. As always, finding stuff that interests them and keeps them fully engaged in learning is a battle.

By recent I meant recently recorded.  8)

If you're were trying to ridicule me you should have mentioned that 'Jezebel' is from 1951 and 'Surrender' from 1961.  :D

I didn't want to plunge the knife too deeply ;D:

Surrender is an adaptation of a 1902 Neapolitan ballad:

Similarly to what happened to an even earlier (1898) Neapolitan song:
