Title: Royal Navy shadowing Russian warships
Post by: Chelseaboy on March 26, 2020, 03:32:44 AM
The Royal Navy has announced it has been  shadowing seven Russian warships "after unusually high levels of activity in the Channel and North sea "

Looks like Putin is testing how weak our defences are from the Corona Virus situation.

I wonder why ?

Maybe Putin wants to bother Europe or just the UK. When you have to divert resources to watch Russian hardware, you have less resources to combat the virus. Why is any nation testing others at a time like this?

No, it's about creating an economic burden on the UK.

Boethius,

With the price of Russian oil crashing, the Rouble still in a mess and Russian stock indexes down, i'd say Putin is creating more of an economic burden on his own country with his military sabre-rattling.

Not really.

Russia has conscription, so the Russian government is paying for the food and clothing of most of its sailors, who live on the ship year round, whether they are docked or at sea.

The Russian government owns its oil and gas (and most of the Russian economy), so fueling ships is a negligible cost.

Russia has been preparing for an "Economic Shock" for years, and is the reason why more and more of the budget was being switched to rubles over the years
so it makes no difference what the price of anything is

let's see how prepared the West will be a few months from now vrs Russia...
then
1-2 years from now, watch Europe remove all economic sanctions from Russia...
because it has no choice

Boethius,

Your point about Russia paying it's sailors whether on land or sea is irrelevant.

Having actually served in the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm I can assure you that we're paid and fed whether at sea or not also.

Only Submariners get paid extra for being at sea...that's because they do long tours away from home on a regular basis.

So no economic burden for us to shadow dopey Russians adjacent to our waters either on that score.

We're not the ones trundling round from Russia in warships or flying warplanes all the way from Russia to be  near our airspace to be swatted away like pesky flies...wasting aircraft or warship fuel....whereas our ships are based in these seas anyway and our warplanes are just popping up from our airbases here so it's no different in fuel than our normal daily exercise flights/sailings.

So it's no economic burden to us....and if we're lucky we'll catch one of those Russian warplanes in our actual airspace so we can shoot it down..just like Turkey did.

Krimster,

We've been hearing these pro-Russian fantasies from you and your kind about Europe having to remove economic sanctions from Russia for years now...and it ain't happened.

In fact during that period economic sanctions against Russia have been increased.

Put another record on...yawn.

I know you're paid whether you are at sea or not.  But sailors not at sea may or may not be living on the ship (they may be in their homes on a base, purchasing their own food, for one - untrue of Russian conscripts).  Furthermore, oil and gas, satellite surveillance, etc., costs money.  It's not equivalent for the Russian economy, as it's all "internal" for them.

In any event, that's the Russian strategy.  Whether or not it succeeds is a separate matter.

As for sanctions, they may be in place, but Germany and France are still trading with Russia.  In fact, trade increased significantly from 2017 through to 2019.

Yeah!  What she said!   LOL.

Maybe if they use enough oil/gas they can create a demand for it.   Oh, that's right.   Russia was so fortunate to start an OPEC oil war at exactly the right time.   Coupled with the Corona Virus limiting transportation, they have just blasted a hole in the bilge of the Russian economy and the ship is sinking.   All hands climb to the superstructure to stay above water.

What to do with the Navy?   Oh, go parade it around England for awhile.   Perhaps we'll get enough interest to distract from what a mess we've made of the economy!

Nah, they are looking in the Imperial past and trying to employ tactics then used.  I think it's a mistake, but I see the patterns of what they're going to do, and why.

Read about Gorchakov, and particularly, read anything he wrote.  This is a play from his time.

So,according to the Oirish blagger, the Russians had seven warships in the English channel for the entertainment of their people back home.

The rather large hole in his claim is that it was the BRITISH Royal Navy that has announced what the Russians have been up to ...NOT Russia.

If the Royal Navy hadn't announced it it's very doubtful the Russian people would have known about it for their "entertainment".

Bit like U2 holding a concert ..not telling anyone,so only the venue owner could watch it ..then relying on the venue owner to tell everyone after the event.otherwise no-one else would ever know about it : )

Yep folks..dopey Moby has been busted again for yet another of his daft theories : )

Putin knows a nation must respond to his show of force. Putin is wasting the UK's time and money because they must respond. The UK's time and money can be better spent fighting the outbreak. Nations shouldn't be playing wargames claiming it's entertainment for their people back home, especially since they will have to deal with their own outbreaks and will need to save their money and resources to save the lives of their people.

As a Russian commentator said, in summary..

Зачем сопровождали? Чтобы не заблудились? ..

"Why ( the need) to accompany .. to prevent being lost ?  .."

Yes CB, the article in the DM ( and others ) got quoted and mocked ..  but you 'understand' Russian so much better than I ..

Why don't you subscribe to a RU news feed ( or two)  and you'd not be posting in a manner that proves ignorance ...

And Russia would deny it was in your airspace even if it landed on

Yeah, I forgot about that one.

10/ Wearing a surgical mask is essential during the viral pandemic

That's one I could care less about. If people were running around in bike
helmets and knee pads I wouldn't feel the need to point out to everyone
that it probably won't help much.

Moby,

Don't try one of your infamous mobyswerves on me..it won't work.

If the Royal Navy hadn't announced what had happened the Daily Mail(and others) wouldn't have had anything to report about...and the Russian people wouldn't have known anything about it.

So..your claim that Russia sent warships into the English channel to entertain the people back home is gibberish.

They can try, but it's not like the Brits would care about Russiann= tourists  being told not to visit ( like what happened to Turkey) if a 'Bear' had it's wings clipped ...
