Thanks again Moby for posting this.
It gave me a lot of cold chills, because I cannot do the 'roughing it' as you were able to do.
Your report reminded me a lot of Jone's report when he was trying to get out of Russia last year or so.
A beautiful woman is pleasant to look at, but it is easier to live with a pleasant acting one.

:clapping: Fascinating TR. What an adventure. I would have probably missed that train. I trust this adventure may not have ended yet

Road Trip to Russia
« Reply #27 on: December 08, 2017, 06:32:25 PM »
Some of you might know that I spend a lot of time in Sochi, Russia and quite like it !

I've frequently toyed with the idea of doing a road trip and now I'm leaving the UK to drive across a few European nations and HOPEFULLY - I'll be allowed into Russia to hand deliver a letter from the Mayor of Cheltenham to the Mayor of Sochi -  I studied and live 20 mins from Cheltenham -  when in the UK and I've been working on a project with Russians on a concept of mine that they have helped me bring to fruition

Michael - one of my colleagues and native of Sochi is taking his life in his hands and driving back with me  - he came to Sochi to bring the pre-production prototype to test and we will give it a good 'trashing' on the way back.

Our journey will end with the handing over of said letter and we will drive to Sochi Autodrom's Formula 1 track - where our journey will finish in the pit-lanes

I'll update here as we cross Europe and you'll be able to track us as we cross France, Belgium, Germany, Poland .....

So Mobers you old fart ;D Serious question here. Where do you see yourself in the long run with your relationship with SC? I mean Sochi looks like it has a lot more going for it in terms of activities, scenery, excitement than Cheltenham. Surely if you brought SC over to Cheltenham she would be baying to get out of old farts ville after like a day or so and get back to all the excitement that Sochi has to offer?

People who truly love each other don’t care where they are, so long as they are together.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

You're still not THAT observant, Trench.

SC doesn't care for all the excitement as long as there is water and some sun - she can sunbath in 14C - if there's no wind !  A gravel pit or a river will do )

And you? I'm guessing by your response you will be wanting to live in Cheltenham rather than Sochi?

You mean to tell me you intend to treat this girl like an escort :o There for you to fly in (or drive) and see for entertainment at your leisure?

Or, if they decide to marry, she will travel to the UK with him.

You are assuming SC desires marriage.  Many women her age do not.

Trench, give him a break. I have seen Moby and SC together and this a genuine relationship. I've seen so many others that weren't.

On arriving in Sochi, Misha - finally - got a rest from me and I went to visit SC...

I though it would be 'fun' to surprise her - but she was in the bank in the town centre and a neighbour saw me and let me in to the apartment block and gave me a key to the apartment and  SLEPT...

Next morning, we had to officially 'finish' our trip and we headed back to Adler - only 3 km from the border with Georgia / 'Abkhazia' and Sochi's F1 race track.

We have been displaying their logo since before we left Cheltenham and it was 'pay-back' time.... I THOUGHT there'd be a photo-session in the pit-lane - but Oh NO ....  they stopped the Dodge Vipers filming their crazy laps to allow the Vauxhall Insignia on the track !!

We got loads of photos and a short video - promoting our trip and a talk Misha and I would do about our trip.

I've been on the track on foot - but it was GREAT to stop on the grid - lining my front wheels on the yellow line - and imagine the red lights coming down and FLOORING it :)

Photos later ... cannot upload from the train

Re: Road Trip to Russia - the letter is delivered to the Mayor of Sochi
« Reply #39 on: December 14, 2017, 10:00:58 AM »
The idea of this trip was 3-fold

1/ Test our gadget

2/ Bring a letter from the Mayor of Cheltenham to Sochi

3/ Possibly leave the car in Russia or close-by for future use ( more in a later post )

Today was the day we had to go to Sochi administration to deliver the letter...  The business suit, shirt and tie went on off we went.

We were met by a lovely lady I knew already and she took us past security and up to a lovely room where the lady responsible for Sochi's international relations and her team work ... Cheltenham has one lady who SO nearly lost her job in cut-backs - but Sochi is now labelled the third capital of Russia and no expense is spared

As with the Russian tradition - tea, lots of cakes / biscuits and many questions about our trip - particularly the Latvia episode - which made the local TV news there ;)

We were joined by two Mayoral assistants - but no 'big cheese' - our scheduled arrived being a day earlier ((

Nevertheless, the initial disappointment in not meeting said Mayor - VVP was also in town - so he 'out-ranked' us didn't last long..

Anastasia presented the Mayor of Cheltenham a gift - will post the photo - when she ( Cheltenham's Mayor) gets to see it and I got THE most fantastic Matryoshka Doll set and a lovely bound photo album of Sochi and it's wonderful nature.

Having been to Sochi Autodrom and one of my passions - Formula 1 Motor racing - it was time to satisfy my other sporting passion - yacht racing ..

We we invited to Sochi's Grand Marina to be interviewed on local TV and combine promoting our road-trip with my good friends at the Marina .

One of the questions ( normally one has an idea of the questions - as you've been asked them beforehand - to stop pregnant pauses ) was " Have you any other plans to arrive in Sochi - other than by plane, train or automobile?" ...

Quick as a flash - I said, "Well if anyone wants a yacht delivered - though can we do it in Spring / Summer ?" !

We were joined by the lovely Anastasia - the Marketing / Promotions Manager of the Marina and had some fun making our own video - after the TV crew left

Mark Smith eh? Did you tell them how common your name was ;D Would have added more conversationally to the video than here is a car and her is a yacht - really! I would have never of noticed.

Never the most observant .... our Trench clearly isn't aware that my 'Smith' is [edited to add ISN'T] spelt as the English do....

Other - more observant folks -  would have noticed the lovely setting and weather for December - and all the UK offshore territory registered yachts ;)

Indeed, even the lovely Anastasia....

Then there was the 'origin' of the Russian word 'вокзал /Vokzhal' ( from London's Vauxhall - the Russian (apparently) asked how we referred a railway station and misunderstood that the response was the station's PLACE name - not the name for a railway station ...

Please note MY TR's include photos of the places I go to in the FSU ... I also try to refrain from making inane comments about other folks TRs

'Her' endeth my my response...

And I always remember the one and only Robert Lindsay in Citizen Smith being asked by some upper-crust Henry if he spelt his surname with one "f" or two - and Smith (Lindsay) replying "three."
