Last trip to Ukraine
« on: October 06, 2019, 05:00:52 AM »
I met a young girl from Khelmnitsky when she came to the U. S. for a summer
work study program a few years ago.  I met her again when I came to Ukraine
and visited Lviv.  I asked her if there was anything that I could send her and
she wanted Reese's peanut butter cups (apparently they are not available in
Ukraine) and also asked for some perfume.  I purchased these items, but I
went to mail them and was told that the perfume cannot be mailed because it
is flammable.  I picked up some small containers of the perfume and brought
them on this trip.  When I was able to contact her, she told me that she was
in the Carpathians on vacation and would not be able to meet me in Kiev.  She
advised me to mail them via нова поста.  I was told this is a private delivery
system in Ukraine.  The package is sent to a branch near the recipient and
they call them.  When the girl gave me the address information, I was surprised
it did not have the usual building number and postal code.  They only needed
to know the city, branch number, and the phone number of the recipient.
Delivery in 2 days for less than 3 dollars.  I was going to have someone at the
hotel or my interpreter take care of this for me, but I decided to see if I could
do this simple task on my own.  I learned how to say I want to mail this
package and no insurance.  The closest нова поста branch was on the next
street over from the hotel (they have a site that shows the location on a map),
so I went there with my package.  I told her that I wanted to mail this package
with no insurance.  Things went rapidly downhill from there.  I thought that I
would have to have someone take care of this for me.  The lady must have recognized my deer in the headlights look and fortunately she spoke English.
She wanted to know what was in the package and the value.  Mission
accomplished, but it seemed like a Pyrrhic victory.  As I was writing this, my
friend messaged me that she had received the package in 2 days.  When I did
mail the Reese's peanut butter cups through the regular mail, they did not
leave a notice and when she went to inquire 2 weeks after it had arrived, they charged her a small fine.  With all the privatizations going on in Ukraine, I wonder how the regular post office will fare.

I went to Pushka for lunch to have some borsch which is on my diet.  It
was maybe a 10 minute walk from the hotel.  I ordered the borsch and some
grilled vegetables.  I grade borsch on whether it is better than mine.  I use a
recipe from Veselka, a Ukrainian restaurant in New York.  The man who started
the restaurant was from Odessa.  I thought that the borsch was not very good,
but there was something black in it that was not familiar to me.  I remembered
that a Russian restaurant owner in Las Vegas told me that often any leftovers
are put in the borsch.  I thought it might be eggplant or mushroom, but it
turned out to be a smoked pear.  It did not taste like a pear and I did not care
for it.  The grilled zucchini, carrots, eggplant, and tomato were good.  I did not
eat the grilled yellow pepper or the onions.

I wanted to play poker, but there were thunderstorms.  There were umbrellas
in the the hotel lobby presumably for guest use, but I waited for the rain to
diminish.  I go to the Архитектура Бекетова metro station near the nearby McDonald's and go to Держпром which is just behind the Kharkiv Palace.  The
Full House Poker Club is across the street.  I go into the club and say that I
would like to play poker.  Not much English is spoken here.  I have played here
before and the people there were very helpful.  I get 2500 grivna in chips and
sit down at a table of no limit hold'em.  I do not understand what the dealer is
saying to me, but the player next to me takes 500 grivna from my stack and
puts it on the table.  Apparently at this table you can only start with 500 grivna.  Things start very well, but over time things are going downhill.  My luck starts
to turn and I actually am up a few hundred grivna.  I intended to leave at
midnight, but wind up playing to 0300.  I always feel badly leaving after a big
win, so I always give people a chance to win their money back.  This is low
stakes, I do not mind losing my whole stack.  The game breaks up at 0300 and
I am down maybe 200 grivna, but I probably spent that much on drinks.  I
have a great evening essentially for free.  I really enjoy playing at this club.
The players are very friendly and when I would have a bad beat the winner
would offer his hand.  When I would make a good play, the other players would
be congratulatory.  They actually served borsch at the club, but I did not get to
try it.

I started playing chess when I was young, but I am out of practice.  I
remembered seeing people playing in the metro station, but I could not
remember which station.  I found out that the metro station is Держпром.
There are tables with chess boards part of the table.  I am not sure how the
chess players feel about foreigners.

There is a lot of construction going on in Kharkiv.  I buy a lot of Kievsky tort
and Шоколадный tort (chocolate cake called Празький) from the Roshen
store at Ave Plaza.  There are so many things that I would like to have that
are not on my diet.  I am pretty sure that I could live in Kharkiv or Odessa
and not feel deprived.  As expected, there are many more signs in Ukrainian
instead of Russian.  My greatest pleasure is practicing my Russian.  Over the
years, it seems that more people under what I am saying with less difficulty.
I thought that I needed to spend three months in Ukraine to really become
proficient.  I would go to St. Petersburg if it was not such a pain to get the visa.

Hello :welcome:

How is it a pain to get a RU visa ?

If you are going to use the UA translit for Kharkiv, why spell Odesa and Kyiv the Russian way ( Odessa / Kiev ) ?

I thought the same. Not sure what the connection of the girl, poker and borsch...or maybe its just a travel journal. Seem awfully laborious at this time for a casual trip. It also could be just me.

I prefer ukraine, simply because ease of staying here, as opposed to Russia, visa for only a month, doesn't do it for me. That being said, i prefer Russia for dating rather than Ukraine, as Ukraine is pretty run down.

UA for me is more rundown, i am a digital nomad, i spend my time jumping between FSU and North America. It is my opinion, i am still in the dating game, unlike most who repeat conquests they had 20 years back, these days young women have Iphones, need more than just money to get by  ;)

Japtaps, are you and the OP (original poster) the same poster? The OP's profile showed being married to a Ukrainian woman. Does this mean you've been since divorced and is currently dipping in the barrel again?

No, I simply was in that city for 5 weeks , my ex girlfriend did my tattoos, I left a week ago. Nothing much to add regarding that , I am still in Ukraine, admin and mods can verify, I been standing at the sidelines of this forum for number of years , same people reciting old stories, the game has changed

Do tell, how do you date in Russia without actually going there?

Hi, I thought your original for suggested RU was more run down... there are many places where it is, but *I* meant overall.

Thanks for explaining.

Sorry, i juggle multiple things so i mistype, Confederate, regarding what you said, i been to Russia many times, was engaged to someone in moscow last year, and was single start of this year when me and my fiancé parted, it was the toughest thing to happen to me and her. I am very much in FSU , and jump between locations.

Trench, my experiences are different from others. i am muscular, with tattoos (A lot of tattoos), and can travel, i attract different type of women , than some other men. If i had anyone ask me for advice, it would  be simply to focus on making more money, get in shape, and that is pretty much. Don't overcomplicate things, it is relatively simple. Don't bother with learning the Russian language , poetry etc, use that time to invest in the other areas i stated, go with some flowers on the first date, and you are pretty much there.

That's pretty good advice, I recently found out from the chaos on here that it takes doing gym about three times a week for about four hours at a time if not more as an absolute minimum in order to get musclar. Unfortunately, I can only manage about an hour maybe two each week at present which after doing it for a good 18 months doesn't really do that much. Hopefully I'll have more time on my hands for it in the future. Money is probably the easier one to achieve. I know money talks out there and money is seen as power so making a good show of things probably helps.

In the past I have kind of over complicated things but over time have understood the place better I think. As you say to avoid complicating it all focusing on those two things are probably a good idea. I like learning the language and it holds some advantage but I think if a girl admires a guy then it's not really needed.

A real pain for me not being able to get over there at the moment. Apart from the flight ban the virus situation seems to be getting real bad out there:

http://www.google.com/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/coronavirus-ukraine-cases-update-lockdown-covid-infections-b878673.html%3famp

Wouldn't like to end up getting the virus over there I think.

You got it bass-ackwards.  I think Russia has spent more on its big cities, but the countries are equally run down, in different ways.

This post was composed without the aid of google.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

You can work on more than just muscles , your appearance, how you dress and such , having money is great , try striving for a package , looks , finances , how you come across. I see men spend way too much time learning the language, and forgetting the basics of being a man

UA for me is more rundown, i am a digital nomad, i spend my time jumping between FSU and North America. It is my opinion, i am still in the dating game, unlike most who repeat conquests they had 20 years back, these days young women have Iphones, need more than just money to get by  ;)
Do you mean more specifically dating or game?

Kharkov is the 2th city of the country, there is a good vibe there.

If you are in Kiev in the next day PM me.

You got it bass-ackwards.  I think Russia has spent more on its big cities, but the countries are equally run down, in different ways.

I agree with your suggestion ;)

Dating , I don't do any bars etc No time these days, too busy working , tattoos , and gym, women fit around my schedule 😂

I love Kharkov, I avoid capital cities like Kiev, I find capitals attract the worse of a country as a whole , but if I do , I would gladly meet-up

You can work on more than just muscles , your appearance, how you dress and such , having money is great , try striving for a package , looks , finances , how you come across. I see men spend way too much time learning the language, and forgetting the basics of being a man

I agree, I think Ukrainian women are particularly interested in the things you mention. Belarusian women tend to often be more interested in the physic but that is of course generalisation. I'm planning on getting back to Ukraine next year when hopefully things will be better, I should be in a better position financially to make a go off it then so it's something I'm really looking forward to. With all the beautiful women in Ukraine that are brought up in the traditional way I find the place like a paradise. I've been to Kiev, Odessa, Nikolaev and Lviv but I've never been to Kharkov (Kharkiv) yet. I hear Kharkiv has a lot of dodgy women but I also heard to be wary of Nikolaev. It also intrigues me to go and see what these well talked about cities are like. I know Kharkov is one of those cities a fair few guys looking for FSW go to in Ukraine but not as commonly ventured as Kiev of course. I've been to Kiev three times now so it's not holding that curiosity that I first had when venturing there.

I've also been to Moscow which I much enjoyed, a bit of a different feel to it than Ukraine, Minsk in Belarus also. St. Petersburg I've not been to yet but I've heard some of the cities outside these major two cities in Russia can be better for avoiding dating industry pitfalls.

Hope it continues to go well for you :)

If you ask the men, they will say women just care about money, but truth is somewhere in the middle, it is just like the west here. I may get a few people angry, but FSU is not filled with kind caring people, i was out with my ex month ago, a woman fell in the middle of the street, people walked by, my ex and her friend didn't care, i ran and got the woman up, she smiled in shock. There is not much compassion here, i am meeting a girl tomorrow , she has a spanish boyfriend already , but she wants to try things with me. I had ex's who laughed cheating on their boyfriends, i am sort of guy where women can be open with. I did the the whole traditional girl thing etc, believe me , this is not the land where you find kind people of would love you till death, stick to the West if that is what you want.

I have short flings, and cut women quickly if they don't fit. I can tell you of a girl who loved me to bits, wanted my kids (many do), i found a stray kitten in ukraine, took the kitten in, but she would abuse the kitten if the kitten pooped, and laugh , and it pissed me off , so i told her to leave she was shocked i chose the kitten over her, but i knew she was evil deep down. You can see a woman's character by seeing the way they treat an animal, see how they react when the animal pushes them over the edge.

I was engaged a year ago, that woman helped me a lot, i would say she loved me, but the russian mentality got to her. It is hard to find true unconditional, many don't. I prefer to focus on myself, my health, physical appearance, business, if i ever do meet someone , then fair be, but i don't buy into a lot of what is posted regarding Western VS FSU women.
