The New World Order - AUKUS
« on: September 18, 2021, 04:22:14 AM »
So most recent news in the last few days in the formation of AUKUS a new alliance between Australia, UK & the US. Most notably including a deal that will see the UK and the US joining together to build and supply Australia with Nuclear submarines. That of course was a major blow to France that they didn't see coming as they were unceremoniously ditched from their deal with Australia to update their submarine fleet.

For the UK this not only means the creation of many highly paid jobs but also a big boost to the economy of potentially billions of pounds. For the US likely the same also but also for both a move to working together to cumulatively make each other stronger rather than weaker by doing deals with competitors like China.

I see this as a great move forward that I think has only been possible by Brexit and cutting loose the EU. Before I think the US were too wary of its strategic and technological secrets ending up in the EU. Now we are free from the EU we are able to form better partnerships with the US and that's a better fit for us. France of course are unhappy and throwing their toys out of the pram and of course along with it the EU. Once again the UK has trumped the EU post Brexit and for a second time humbled this overbearing institution. Before Brexit the EU thought they would soon show the UK its 'mistake' now it's looking anything but. So another point for the UK against the EU post Brexit :D

So far the score:

UK: 2

EU: 0

The previous point is of course getting the vaccine first. So far this post Brexit situation is making for enjoyable viewing.

Would be interested to hear what you US guys think about AUKUS, a good new deal and the start of a new World Order?

Some different takes on AUKUS out in the press. Some wonder if it may be a replacement for NATO. Trump used to complain of the cost of NATO being mainly borne by the US. The virus of course means that cut backs are necessary in most NATO countries including the US. NATO has 30 members many in Europe who are also members of the EU. Possibly the US may be considering ditching NATO as the EU can devise their own military defence and the subject of this had come up in recent days from the EU commission president. A lot of the time in the past not only was it seen as too early for the EU to form a military defence but many of its member states had NATO membership anyway so it was seen as not needed. By ditching NATO it would mean that the EU would no longer be able to sit back and let others protect it. Apart from mutual obligation for EU member states to protect each other the collective force of them all would almost certainly be enough to put off the presumed threat - Russia.

NATO members in Eastern Europe are probably a difficult one for the US as they tend to be fairly small and not great economies or militaries. So it's not certain if they would be a help or a liability. In addition their closeness to Russia could make Russia feel encircled and thereby cause poorer relations.

Looking at the AUKUS situation it could be said to work out quite well strategically. The UK is no longer in the EU so it's no longer committed to involvement in any potential Russia-EU dispute. The UK is not too close to Russia's borders that it is seen as a big threat to Russia or be over-run quickly yet it is still fairly close to Russia if a forward base of operation were needed. The UK also has a decent military and economy so as not to be a drag. Australia has a good economy but just need to improve their military but that is feasible as they have the economy to be able to support it. They are near to China but again not so close as to be quickly over-run or risk a dispute easily arising by being too close to China.

So potentially a better strategic place to be than with NATO. The fact that all three are Anglo-Saxon cultures tends to help as well as the French/EU culture of slow moving bureaucracy isn't a great asset to have if wanting to move fast on military matters. So overall I would say it's a good move and better for the EU to sort out its own defence as after all they are the ones whose borders are right next to Russia.

Looks like the French are still really seething over this one lol. Looks like the UK may have a free trade deal with Australia and France/the EU won't:

Cutting off nose to spite ones face so it seems.

I hope you are all taking this in, sometimes I wonder if we should allow our Mobers back in :-\

I don't really want to engage in this vis-a-vis with the UK and EU, but this tidbit in the article posted got my attention.

Quote
"Keeping one's word is the condition of trust between democracies and between allies," France's European affairs secretary Clément Beaunetold Politico. His remarks were confirmed on Monday by a spokesperson. "So it is unthinkable to move forward on trade negotiations as if nothing had happened with a country in which we no longer trust,"..

Pretty @#! funny stuff there. Considering France that abruptly pulled out of the '97 no-fly zone in Iraq when it found out it can broker a deal with Saddam Hussein and bilk the '96 Iraq Oil-for-Food program scandal. It was France, led by Jacque Chirac and his silly Interior Minister at the time, who aggressively stood to block all deeper inspection and excursion inside Iraq, which could've stopped the invasion leading to the Iraq War, in fear of exposing the corruption.

Some reactions from France and the EU to news of the deal:

The Frenchy's wanted to sell diesel submarines to Australia. This is ancient
technology. They are noisy, require frequent snorkeling above the surface,
they are slower and require refueling ships to tag along.

The First Nuke sub was christened in 1954 making diesel subs obsolete overnight.
France developed their first Nuclear sub in 1971, it's unknown why they thought
that Australia would think buying diesel sub would be a good deal. It's even more
unknown why they are upset about it.

I could understand France getting upset if they offered a modern Sub to Australia
and then losing the deal, but it's like they offered Grandma's hand in marriage
to Australia rather than their beautiful daughter. Beautiful daughter will always
win.

That's just my two kopecks,

Bill

Lol, I think you're right Bill, when I first read the bit about diesel subs it sounded like they were going to fit them up with some WWI U-boat subs :D

Had the Australians realised there would be so much fuss they would have probably just announced they were ditching the French deal first wait a few weeks then announce the new AUKUS agreement. To my mind it sounds like the Australians were unhappy with the French deal and they likely intended to drop it anyway. Hence the French are just seeing to as they have been trump by the US/UK when really they were dropped from the running already it was just that Australia were leaving it hanging until they got a better deal signed in my opinion.

China’s ‘Lehman moment’?
Quote
Evergrande, the world’s most indebted property developer, is crumbling under the weight of more than $300 billion of debt and warned more than once it could default. Banks have reportedly declined to extend new loans to buyers of uncompleted Evergrande residential projects, while ratings agencies have repeatedly downgraded the firm, citing its liquidity crunch.
The financial position of the other Chinese property developers also took a hit following rules outlined by the Chinese government to rein in borrowing costs of the real estate firms. The measures included placing a cap on debt in relation to a company’s cash flows, assets and capital levels.

Difficult to know how big financial collapses in China might affect it. Whether it will humble them or whether they would look to taking over territory to gain access to more resources. China is a pretty large place so I don't think the latter would help and if foreign powers move to bolster defences in the region it would be pretty difficult for them too. The greater worry might be from China becoming more unstable internally if a big financial crises happens. Then stuff in China might become more random than the current affair which is at least stable as all fairly firmly controlled.

Anyway, it looks like the new AUKUS alliance is already showing signs that it will develop nicely beyond just a supply subs and casual assistance agreement:

German Election at the moment, French Presidential Election April next year. Macron is all for pushing ahead with forming a EU army apparently. Not something that I would mind now we are out if the EU as better for the EU to protect its own border with Russia I think. Being out off the EU and with AUKUS means we can take a step back from issues with Russia so better for us. I think better strategically as well as it's probably quite an economic burden for the US to station troops in Europe and be held to protect countries a long distance away that takes a long time to get there, particularly by sea. Reckon this will probably be the end of NATO coming as it's no longer really needed in this day and age plus it's not necessarily a great alliance anymore with many smaller weaker nations economically and militarily likely to pull down the overall effectiveness of the alliance. Better to have three strong powers well positioned than many weaker ones I feel.

No doubt Mobers is around somewhere trying to get 'un grip' with all of this ;D

Looks like the EU is losing more from Australia in this latest news:

http://amp.scmp.com/news/asia/australasia/article/3159177/australia-plans-ditch-european-taipan-helicopters-us-black

Apparently the Airbus Taipan helicopters are just too unreliable with Australia's military having many incidents of having to ground them so not great to have when needed I guess.

Macron is all for pushing ahead with forming a EU army apparently.

Each country will donate $50.00, 11 soldiers and 21 generals. They will
all receive medals and have a parade on Earth Day.
