May Day!

For those of you not old enough to remember, May 1st was the day of celebrating the Soviet Union.  Первое Мая - День международной солидарности трудящихся ("International Day of Worker's Solidarity")

I was on the phone with a friend of mine last night in St. Petersburg.  I was teasing her that she needed to go out and sweep the streets.  She explained the role of the Subbotnicks (выходить на субботник), the workers that were ordered to go work, to clean the state for the holiday.  Virtually everyone was conscripted.

Today, the Labor Day, or Spring Day, Holiday, in Russia, carries only the memory of the massive state celebration.  Subbotnicks are a volunteer group, without too many volunteering.  Is there anyone in Russia who would like to share their May Day celebrations?
