Bringing Jewelry from Ukraine
« on: July 28, 2014, 09:04:25 AM »
My fiance believes she will be charged to bring things such as earrings, engagement ring, etc., from Ukraine to USA.  I am not sure where to confirm this.  I have taken jewelry in without declaring.  Could she not simply put it in a purse, wear the ring, etc.?  Is she really going to get stopped and charged a fee?

Thanks.

Highly unlikely unless she is bringing in an extremely large amount of jewelry.

Not sure about Ukraine, but Russia has laws that regulate export of the personal things that are or may be of cultural or historical significance. This would be not quite the jewels only, but practically anything that was made 50 years ago or earlier. Especially books fall into this risky category.

Custom jewels may fall into this category irrespectively of their age.

Other than that, suggest checking the websites that inform about the regulations on exporting valuables by the individuals.

I have read conflicting things.
If personal jewelry, fine.  But somehow it seems it needs to show "wear."
I don't know.
I've brought things in and out no problem, never declared.
Perhaps it would be different for a citizen of Ukraine.
I think she should wrap a few key items of jewelry in a napkin, put it in a change purse, and it they x-ray it most likely they will see the coins and nothing else.

Three lbs of gold would ring some bells and gather some attention.
Other than that..mums the word.

Declarations are made at a POE.
Again, mums the word.

Loose jewelry could be subject to theft.

my respose is based on my wife and I going into and out of Ukraine about 20 times between 1999 and 2009.
leaving Ukraine with the amount of jewelry a person would normally wear is not a problem, too much and it's a problem
having anything that might be considered antique jewelry is a problem
anything not on your person might be a problem when it's x-rayed
also, the jewelry your wife is leaving with should have been listed on her custome declaration when she entered

secondly, going into Ukraine with jewelry is a much different experience
if your wife is a Ukrainian citizen, expect nothing but hassles
she'll have to go through a different customs line than you and will be subject to different rules than you, and be blackmailed ito paying a customs fee
I used to just take my wife's jewelry and put in my pocket when we entered when she was a Ukrainian citizen to avoid this after learning the hard way
After she became a US citizen, no problem
Hope this helps!

Wasn't many years ago though . . . before Yushenko cleaned up a lot of the problems at customs in airports?

could be, my wife got her US passport in 2004, but I've rarely seen a Ukrainian bureaucrat see an opportunity for enhancing their income and let it pass by, and frankly there was just as much corruption after Yushenko as there was before, the Orange Revolution brought as much hope and change as you know who...
