Sharing eachothers cultures. How do you do it?
« on: May 09, 2006, 05:10:25 PM »
In my case, my lady is also getting hispanic culture, along with hometown USA.

Having been back and forth, it seems the latin roots have been my plus card.  For her, I've given her tourist brochures of Panama, Cafe Duran (her mom loves it!), local indigenous arts and crafts.  What else?  I've sent her issues of Latina Magazine (IMO give a positives image of us) after mom is done reading them. I've also given her a Revista Christina. It's totally in Spanish, and like a who's whos gossip of our celebrity. She has loads of fun going through them with her mom and sister.  She also likes to listen to Spanish music, even though she doesn't even speak it.  Once I told her the tragic story of Selena, and then she insisted I bring her music.  My goodness, in a few months I'll probably find her watching UniVision (broadcast from Miami) with my mom.

Food?  Well I love her Ukrainian cooking.  When my lady told me she wants me to make her good "Spanish/Panamanian food", I almost laughed.  It's like "darling, I'll take you to mothers house".  I cook like an Irishman.  BTW, I do know how to make a mean pot of Corned Beef cabbage stew!  That is not a joke.  The last time I attempted Aros Con Pollo, it was a disaster.  It came out terrible, and I had to throw it all away.  It was probably so bad the rats even spit it out.

I admit, I'm guilty of badmouthing the area I live. However, I try to show the positive aspects of where I live.  This part of Virginia is rich in history, as the birthplace of our nation.  I've brought picture books of Colonial WIlliamsburg and such. Nicknacks from Crackerbarrel (mainly because I eat there on the way to the airport), Marvel Comics for her nephew, and Low Rider car magazines.

I'm not one to tell other how to treat their inlaws, but bring them Moon Pies!  That is if your coming from the states.  I did and it was a hit.  One box of each, Chocolate, Strawberry, Banana, and (if you can find it) Vanilla, should do the trick.  My inlaws loved it.  Some sweets Europe can't make better than the US.  That, Jolly Ranchers, and lemon heads.  Bring them those too. ;D
