In the mid 70s I turned my back on pop & disco when it began to annoy. Took
refuge in jazz, traditional and fusion. Son of Clyde's George Coleman and Ahmad Jamal
were just two of my heroes - near the top of my ladder was Miles...

Apropos of the thread subject, here are a couple of photos of my choir (male section & choirmaster during an organ interlude, whole choir) taken this past Sunday when we performed in the concert hall of the Casa di riposo per musicisti Giuseppe Verdi here in Milan.

The Casa di riposo per musicisti (http://www.casaverdi.org/) - literally, rest home for musicians - is an institution created by Giuseppe Verdi in 1899 - shortly before his death in 1901 - in order "to offer a safe haven to those aged singing artists not favoured by fortune, or who did not possess the virtue of thrift in their youth".

Casa Verdi - as it is affectionately called by us Milanese - opened in 1902 and operated with the very substantial funds bequeathed by Verdi, as well as the rights resulting from the performance of his musical works until 1962. It has offered free hospitality to more than 1,000 musicians over time. Good old Giuseppe is portrayed in top hat and white scarf in the painting behind me, and rests alongside his wife in a crypt there.

I wanted to thank Vaughn for giving a little advice about posting multiple youtube files. I will try it out soon. I was clicking the youtube icon and placing the url between the brackets. It worked once but the other tries all that was left was my text and a blank page. Maybe it was because the url was extremely long and extended onto a second line. I have a habit of making things seem more complicated than they are.

SoC, was it really a Youtube URL? They are not that long, usually. Here's a non-musical example at random (Berlusconi asleep during Medvedev's address :D):  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRx6nCvuj-o&feature=popular

BTW, you can remove from the URL the ampersand and anything following it:
Code: [Select]

I wanted to thank Vaughn for giving a little advice about posting multiple youtube files.
If you want to post multiple files, you have to enclose EACH of them within Youtube brackets:
Code: [Select]

Thanks Sandro.
Another thing I noticed is that it would not work until I added some text.
I received an error message telling me there was no text within the body of the message.
So a video cannot be posted without adding some sort of text?

Correct, a minimum of text is required for a valid post, don't remember exactly how many characters (10 ?).

That is due to the original Youtube poster not wanting to share his video elsewhere (an upload choice). You can still post here the URL that'll lead to the video on the Youtube site, however.

Sandro, I was joking because management blocked access to Youtube.
Every Youtube video posted in the thread will show up as Active Content Removed.

I had just finished sequencing Woman In Love (Brothers Gibb, 1980 - uploaded to my website at www.floriani.it/ballroom-eng.htm), when it occurred me to post Barbra Streisand's recording:

Her remarkable singing capabilities allow her to hold a note (F5, IINM) for all of 10" (2:25-2:35), for 4" a pure note , the rest in vibrato:
"but I give you it AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL" :o

No, but I must confess that I am conservative enough to prefer Maurice Ravel's original orchestration - he was an undisputed MASTER at it - and Maurice Bejart's choreography ;).

Has anyone else ever read Zap Comix?
I think there was a Frank Zappa character named Freak Zipper.
Or maybe it was National Lampoon.
I remember seeing it somewhere in the early 70's.
Maybe Creem or Rolling Stone.
Damn I'm old.
Anyway, I think it depends on which group of musicians Zappa used.
He had some outstanding players in his various groups.

Old Barb; wasn't it Glenn Gould who said her voice was the most perfect musical instrument?  As a not-so-old, non-European, I am here to second Mr. Sandro's appreciation of classical.  Once you've got a piece like this in your compass:

Even modern smarties like this:

Don't measure up.

Still I keep looking though and often feel, in searching for new music of value, like a man stranded on a desert isle in search of a ship to bring him a good meal.  Mostly it is just used diapers and, at best, boxes of cake-frosting that wash up.  The last musical voice who has been really satisfying has been ... (Can you guess?)  Anyway here are few little ditties that seem to have a shard of musical merit.  It might be the start of something, but most likely not.
