That vocalist reminds me of:

If you like that sort of, how to call it, vibrato less singing(?) then perhaps you'd also like Sara Nixey in Black Box Recorder:

I love that song... It was one of those "Touched my soul" songs.

Thank you.  Never heard this version before.

Quite different, I'd say. From your clip, I'd call this Sara Nixey a 'confidential' singer - she whispers more than sing - Sinéad has much more dynamics in her pieces.

Typically, vibrato is the 'last resort' of good singers, i.e. a way to keep on singing when almost out of breath ;) - see Barbra's example upthread, and the following:

Mina is probably the Italian pop singer with the most vocal talent of these past 50 years, and you may notice how she uses vibrato very sparingly, at the end of some long-held notes.

Confidential Singer - OK, seems fair for Sara

Good info on vibrato and I understand what you mean about extending the singing when out of breath.

When I thought about vibrato I had more of this sort of thing in mind:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Wfohl-zEDU[/youtube

No?

First time I hear Mina.  Curious to see how American Pop music reflects in other cultures.  I suppose in the 1960s the US really was the poop.  Surprising to me on my trip to Pare to see them selling adverts for 1960s Oldsmobiles and pictures of JFK along the Seine.

Anyway the Mina video reminded me of a clip from the D. Lynch film Mulholland Drive, the famous street that overlooks LA.

Too bad the clip isn't on you tube anymore - here is the original

No, I could hear no vibrato there ::). Vibrato is a technical term in music with a very specific meaning:
Quote
vibrato is a periodic variation in the pitch (frequency) of a musical note
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vibrato
In singing it sounds like a very fast ululation ;).

Somehow half of my post did not transfer over.  I did not hear vibrato in Linda Scott.  In listening to the Mina recording, however, I thought of Linda.  In the 1960s, the US really was the poop.  Watching the Mina video made the influence of us pop culture apparent enough.  Interesting to see how one's own culture reflects in another.  There is a certain love/hate relationship between Europe and the US isn't there?

In areas other than music, I'd say ;). Love started before WWII with swing/jazz and movie musicals, then exploded in the mid 1950s with R'n'R, at least here in Italy.

Our pop singers were initially called urlatori (screamers), then a new category emerged, that of cantautori. i.e. composers who sang their own songs. An example of the latter is Gino Paoli, who in 1963 released a, for us, memorable Sapore di sale (A Taste of Salt):

A hallmark of our pop music of that period was the terzinato accompaniment.

I rather liked Mina but find it hard to believe Gino could make much of an impression on anyone -- and what a curious little accompaniment that was.  His song sounds a little like:

Bah - it always seemed completely overwrought to me.

And how is this fellow regarded now in Italy?  Like Berlusconi?

You have to consider what our prevailing music was at the time - melodic belcanto with corny lyrics:

Sapore di sale was a much-needed breath of fresh air for us teenagers ;).

Adriano Celentano started out as an urlatore imitating Elvis Presley's body movements - he was nicknamed il molleggiato (the springy fellow) in the 1960s - here in 24,000 Kisses:

A convinced environmentalist, he's been a major figure in our musical scene for the past 50+ years - he's 72 now, still revered though obviously less active than before.

The terzinato came from the States, too (1955):

Eh, pop music has always had a painful side to it.  With all the great music in our history it's hard to imagine how anyone could spend time with this:

or this:

or this:

"raindrops keep falling on my head" and "ebony an ivory" also come to mind.  I suppose once you have a big name you can get away with anything.

So Celentano was the Italian Elvis?  Did they have one in France, Spain and Germany too?  And was Italy similarly invaded by the Brits?  Certainly the big names were popular but what about:

I've thought that the cultural force that made groups like Chad and Jeremy popular was the rough-around-the-edges state of "culture" in the US - we needed the Brits to come and polish us up a bit.  It probably doesn't apply to Italy.

Anyway, I have another question.   For better or worse, it seems that psychedelic music is another one the US can claim credit for.  The creative nucleus for that movement started here:

It was way too arty/extreme for mainline audiences in the US, but influenced all the big players at that time and carries quite a punch today.  I can't imagine it was very popular in Europe either but Europeans have a way of way of discovering essential trends in the US before they gain wide exposure on our soil: music of John Cage, Elliot Carter and Tom Waits come to mind as does, in the pop field, that movie Donnie Darko - quite a Phenom in England.

Nice post Shosty! Venus in Furs in one of my favorite VU songs.  :)

I have been enjoying this song and album for the past few days. The Besnard Lakes from Montreal are producing some of the finest tunes to come out of Canada these days. This video is for the latest single for their upcoming album. This amateur video is impressive, as well. Enjoy!

France had Johnny Halliday:

Spain was still under Franco, and his régime did not encourage change - in any area ;). Germany has always been a non-entity in pop music.

In the 1960s the arrival of the Beatles stimulated the appearance of complessi, i.e. musical groups - we had dozens of them, including a number of transplanted Brits singing in Italian - more or less :D:

Of course France had an Elvis.  Interesting about Spain.

Ya north Europe had no pop - that was a joke; a German Elvis.  The Germans eventually got on board and stole the mantle from US and Brit glam rockers for a time:

Maybe you don't know where the Rammstein take their namer from:

Quote
Rammstein takes their name indirectly from the German town of Ramstein-Miesenbach, the site of a flight show disaster on 28 August 1988. The band's signature song, "Rammstein", is a commemoration of the disaster.
Quote
The Ramstein airshow disaster was one of the world's deadliest airshow disasters. It took place in front of an audience of about 300,000 people on August 28, 1988 in Ramstein, state of Rheinland-Pfalz, West Germany, near the city of Kaiserslautern at the U.S. Ramstein Air Base airshow Flugtag '88. Sixty-seven spectators and three pilots died, and 346 spectators sustained serious injuries in the resulting explosion and fire.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramstein_airshow_disaster

This was the only accident our IAF aerobatics team was ever involved in - unfortunately also the deadliest ever recorded, IINM.
Frecce Tricolori is the only team in the world doing aerobatics with 10 aircraft, 9 always flying in formation and 1 - the soloist - often flying on his own to engage the audience's attention while the rest regroup for a new figure. IIRC, the accident was caused by the team leader having to act as soloist at Ramstein because the usual soloist was not available. The tragedy happened right at the end of their show, possibly because he was starting to relax after an unusually exacting performance.

I knew about the air base.  It's always in the news as the stop off for wounded US citizens who make their way home from wherever.  I did not know about the air show accident.  Explains why the lead singer is on fire and wheres flying goggles.

Very strange.
When I finished inserting the last two songs, as soon as the song was posted I was booted out of the thread. Is this normal?
