anyone listen to the Zappa?

A bit late I know (about a year), but I hadn't noticed this thread 'til now.

Addressing the question, the answer is 'yes', - since 1967!

Am in the audience of 'Ahead of their Time' (and part Weasels Ripped My Flesh).

Once had a drink with Jimmy Carl Black (the injun of the group) after a gig in my home city (Newcastle upon Tyne)

Favourite album (or do I mean most played?) - probably Grand Wazoo.   But I have a great fondness for Uncle Meat.
Favourite single (famously No.1 in Norway where they probably didn't understand the lyrics) - Bobby Brown
To be played at my funeral - Watermelon in Easter Hay

THANK YOU!!!!  The seductive flute just takes you away, then the voice tugs at your heart, then the whole thing explodes in a wall of emotion and sound.  Tull had a classic/rock fusion that I think only the Moody Blues and Pink Floyd have mastered.  Okay... maybe ELP too.  But Tull is in the top 3 for me.

Curiously, I know another American (FLA as it happens - not on this board) who's big on Tull.  They never really did it for me, possibly because I never warmed to Anderson as a character.

The Moodies and Floyd on the other hand are gods in the community!

Moodies are god, and Floyd is the bringer of truth to the common man.  But my first concert was Tull (72-73? Thick as a brick was what hooked me)... and the first for my daughter (with me) ummmmmmmm  let's just say a few years later.  I even sat and talked with Ian, as he he hit on my daughter, thinking she was my wife.  Freaky memories!

IA later became a fish-farmer I believe.  Lately to be seen as a pundit on BBC 'history of rock' progs.  Admits to being surprised by their success as I recall it.

My first real rock Concert was The Rolling Stones, in 1964, here (Longleat, halfway down., check the video).........
http://www.bbc.co.uk/wiltshire/content/articles/2008/12/17/the_rolling_stones_wiltshire_1964_feature.shtml
I cycled the 6 miles from my home village.  I was 14.

I was later to appear again on a Stones video 5 years later, here........

But to my mind, the stars of that show were King Crimson.  I/we had never heard anything like it before.......

Oh yeah.  In the court of the Crimson King still makes me want to get up and dance around the room with my eyes closed (and I can  ;) )  But Inna-gadda-da-vita will ALWAYS be able to put me in the Sufi/Dervish trance....

Ohh man, stop it!  I've got to get to work.  This will always remind me of Denmark late '68/69, where I hung out for a while.  It's the kind of record you can't really play to anyone who wasn't around then.  Especially a RW who was 4 at the time!  Simple, even facile, but hypnotic and great.

Not my dance culture though.  That was strictly disco/funk orientated, starting with Stax/Memphis + Motown + Jamaican Ska in the mid-60s, in my 1st youth culture, here.......

By way of a good-bye for now, and in memory of the 1st of some very special 'trips' I made, I give you......

Happy trails!  Can you still catch your own hand?  Okay... only a few will know what I mean by that.

Great thread 2012... something I can sink my teeth into....

Music for many reasons is a wonderful way to connect your soul to life's realities, it's an escape from the day to day issues that we all face, it's also a way to voyage outside of your body or at times it's simply a way to fend off the stress or simply compliment your mood.... needless to say, music is important or at least to me it is.

Too many genre's and artists to list as one's to listen to but here's a jumping point...

Some may say electronic music is nothing more then loud noises fused together or it's just sampling of real artists... you sorry fools. Electronic music is not only seriously complicated to create but it's also euphoric, uplifting and spiritual. Here's a taste of some quality beats....

Beautiful lyric's and melody, a spiritual journey if you will :

The Dutch master at his best... soft, supple & moving

IF we could only all be able to succumb to the night...

So, some of us may not be into the beats /electronic scene.. fair enough. Here's a few to rock out to...

Canadian rock legends and one of the most over looked rock groups of present day:

Great group nd one of the best live performances you can see... and they do a great job of covering the odd classic or two :

for those of you who still dig the classic rock scene... they are labled as classic for a reason....

Legends who's legacy will last longer then our planet :

A little of the softer side is what suits some of us...

Here's a song that could bring the even the most steel hearted to a state of tears. I prefer a women's voice for this song but hearing Chris take this piece of musical perfection on garnered my respect for his ever changing musical portfolio :

A soft classical classic :

Speaking of soft music... sometimes a woman's voice and a tale of love and sorrow just sticks to your soul.

A little Sarah would all do us well :

I grew up in the streets and some of us find our poetry written on those streets. I don't take many people here to be hip/hop fans so I'll that genre off of here but I would be curious to see  who else enjoys some quality rhymes and beats. For me there is no better then Notorious BIG or Methodman and Big L.

Well, the history of music is replete with examples of 'inspirations' - when not outright 'borrowings' - until the 1886 Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works acquired international validity.

In the 1700s music was rarely printed, and mostly hand-copied with limited circulation. Having one's work 'cited' by another composer could also be form of explicit/implicit homage, as is assumed in the case of J.S. Bach's several Concertos for Harpsichords, liberally dipping into Vivaldi's Estro Armonico ;).

Vivaldi was also heavily cited by G.F. Händel in the famous Hallelujah of his Messiah oratorio (1742), strongly reminiscent of the former's Gloria (RV 589, circa 1720):

In his turn, Vivaldi borrowed heavily for his Gloria - and a previous one (RV 588) - from a similar work by an earlier but much lesser known Venetian composer, Giovanni Maria Ruggieri:

This beautiful part of Vivaldi's Gloria, however, is probably his own original:

This beautiful part of Vivaldi's Gloria, however, is probably his own original:

It has all been said, sung, or played before.  That is the beauty of it all.  And why I appreciate the classically trained 'modern' artists.

Lennon said it well... in a far simpler song.

The rest comes through to the listener.   ;D

I caught this lovely woman's act live at The Blue Note in the Village in Sept '08,
nice mellow nightclub act with terrific accompaniment for those who appreciate
smooth jazz...

and an old Richard Rodgers composition from the American musical State Fair...

Una serata a San Cristoforo sul Naviglio
(An evening at St. Christopher on the Canal)
Friday 26th June, 2010

A few days ago I was mentioning Vivaldi's Gloria, and chance dictated I would be hearing it again this past evening during a performance at St. Christopher's:

St. Christopher's is actually two small churches stuck together, or rather a Romanic church rebuilt in the XIIIth century (left side in the above photo), and a Ducal chapel erected in the XVth century on popular demand after the 1399 pestilence that killed 20,000 ended abruptly - St. Christopher is one of the 14 santi ausiliatori (succouring saints, see http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santi_ausiliatori for a full list) and patron of the sick in general and appestati (pestilence stricken) in particular, later of drivers as well and travellers in general ;).

(stained glass window in RH nave)

This 'mongrel' church has an unusual plan: two naves, but only one apse - in its older part:

(Apse in LH nave)

St. Christopher's is very small, and can accomodate only about 100 people. The concert also included Baroque pieces by Giovan Battista Sammartini, Giovanni Battista Lampugnani, J.S. Bach (Jesus bleibet), W.A. Mozart (Ave Verum) and a piece by Bruno Maderna (1920–1973) - my photo shows his widow in the audience congratulating the 1st violin of the orchestra. The other photo shows the full ensemble - choir and orchestra.

It was rather curious hearing two pieces (Jesus bleibet and Ave Verum) that my choir had performed a cappella in the same place on a cold 15th December night 4 years ago, with an audience of only some 20 people :(. Tonight, the church was packed, orchestras draw more crowds :D.
