Muzh:  Maybe more if Sebastian had sung as well as bang away on an organ.
I chose an organ version because its timbre is closer to the Procul Harum's keyboard - it was originally written for klavier (harpsichord) as 4th movement of his 'French' Suite No. 2 in C minor (BWV 813).

Here's a later orchestral version of the Aria, from the Orchestral Suite No. 3 D major (BWV 1068):
J.S. was a great 'recycler' of his own music ;D.

That would be stretching a wee bit, but I'll give you the intro.

However, I prefer this one from the same group.

TIMBRE
The peculiar identity of a musical instrument - determined by the relative 'strengths' of its harmonics. 'Impressionist' composers like Ravel and Debussy were the first to concentrate on this aspect of music, while previous composers like Bach were not overly concerned and gave generic indications on the instruments to be used (see my previous post).

Therefore, J.S. might not have objected to his Cantata Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten (BWV 93) being performed thus :D

Well, Thanksgiving weekend came and went. I hope everyone had a wonderful time!

Fortunately for wifey and myself, we have much to be thankful for this year. Home Christmas decoration is almost done as well if only wifey can finish putting the lights up on the roof.

I'm lucky she fully embraced this period of the year with me. From carving out a pumpkin for haloween, remembering those that had since passed, giving thanks to our veterans, to tree hunting/decorating (although we bought a fake one last year ), midnight mass, and on up to bidding the past year goodbye to ringing in the new one...

Busy times for us both. Celebrating all our friends and families, and helping those who are both in need and/or are less fortunate than us at this time.

...and so this is Christmas!...so many holiday songs starting to ring the tune of a glorious Holiday to bring us all the cheers! This one has got be one of my favorite Chrismas songs...

Sandro,

You are correct - not Scottish.  The Irish have a long tradition of playing bagpipes.  Amazing Grace is played at policemen/firemen funerals because many policemen and firefighters are Irish.  19thC Irish immigrants had trouble getting factory jobs (NINA - No Irish Need Apply) and many took the dangerous jobs.

I could not find out who wrote the music, while:

I like that song a lot. His song 'Vincent' as well. Most of these classics have very simple guitar tabs with great messages in their songs. McClean's even inspired Roberta Flack to sing a response and which became a classic unto its own...

Anyway, here's another from Dan Folgerberg (RIP).

GQ I always had a fondness for Dan Fogelberg too. I just like the ballads I guess. For some reason I don't know, I'm reminded of some Jackson Browne

Yeah, Jackson Browne one of the guys that helped shaped the music leading into the '80s. I like his 'Tender Is The Night'. Too bad he ran into Darryl Hannah and he literally disappeared after they broke up. Then again, Darryl didn't really make too many movies thereafter either...

I still think San Francisco's Night Ranger's 'Sister Christian' is a Jackson Browne's creation. Certain songs have a distinct flavor about them that you can tell who wrote them, e.g. Bruce Springstein, Lionel Richie, etc...

Quite sorry to hear that :(, I had posted a few other of her morna songs here (http://www.russianwomendiscussion.com/index.php?topic=9589.msg225503#msg225503).

I had the opportunity of seeing her live in concert in Milan some years ago :clapping:.

"In 1991, just a year before she hit it big in Europe with Miss Perfumado, Cesaria Evora hit her stride in Paris with this warm and wonderful recording of morna music from Cape Verde. Produced with a light touch by José de Silva, Mar Azul is still close to the nightclub, to the smoke and whiskey roots of her music as she sang it back home; the great band seamlessly mixes jazz, blues, swing, Latin, and African music into something unique for its time. It is lush yet simple, beautiful and gritty and clean, and totally about this voice. An acoustic guitar or piano rules each track, with bass, light percussion, and touches of violin, clarinet, harmonica, or horn just brushing up against it. This is really where Evora developed comparisons to Billy Holiday, in her ability to sound both fragile and tough. Like classic jazz-blues, this music is about pain and elegance, expressed through a voice that convinces you she has seen both and often can't tell the difference."
Louis Gibson

Moon Goddess,

Cesaria is a vintage classic indeed.  If you enjoy her style, you may like Buena Vista Social Club from Cuba.  Cuba and Cape Verde Islands seem to share  similar culture such  creole populations from slaves from west Africa and colonialists of Iberian Peninsula.  Somewhat different climate.

This is their most popular song:

Although the melody is lively yet haunting, the lyrics are nothing special, perhaps a bit risque.  Same as when I first heard Bob Marley's  "No Woman No Cry."   Thinking Marley's lyrics were something profound and complex about love and not having a woman, I researched them (no Internet then, so it took a while).  Not about love, and not profound, and better explained by using  commas:  No, woman, no cry.  Basically, Marley was reminiscing about spending all night talking with friends.

Have there been many Latin music examples listed in this thread?  I enjoy the music.  One of my several favorites (besides the Buena Vista Social Club) is  Mariposa Traicionera by Mana - translation "Treacherous Butterfly."

The lyrics are as entertaining as the melody:   "You fly and you pose and you are going from mouth to mouth..."

Sounds like some RW.  :o The video is erotically entertaining (has an ad in the beginning).

Ghost of Diana (or Artemis ;) ?), this Gibson seems to ignore entirely the overwhelming influence of Portuguese fado:

and the constant presence of the mandolin-sounding Portuguese 12-string guitar:

Not too many, IIRC. Two years ago I contributed a ground-breaking post (http://www.russianwomendiscussion.com/index.php?topic=9589.msg185203#msg185203) showing that rumba:

was actually invented by Ludwig van Beethoven (2.42-2.55 here):
