As a tribute to the enchanting Ms Houston, American Idol showcased her songs for their female singing contestants to sing...."I Will Always Love You" was Whitney Houston's greatest single. The song is so darn difficult to sing that no contemporary singer even dare touch it.

But here comes Manny Pacquiao's 16 year old niece, the amazing Jessica Sanchez. With only a 30-minute coaching, she did what no one after Whitney Houston even dare to try.

This competition is over.

Thanks GoMG, I didn't know the work of this French cartoonist. Gerard Hoffnung's cartoons - most of them published in London's Punch - were also used in some cartoons films:

I've always suspected that Irish music had a deep influence on US white music, and here is probably the forebear of Fred Astaire's and others' tip-tap, the Irish reel ;D:

Not just white but US in general.

That song isn't Irish, BTW.  :) It's a Shaker song called "Simple Gifts".

It can be found later in Copeland's "Appalachian Spring "

Lord of the Dance is a church hymn written in 1967 using that music.

It doesn't sound like the same theme to me :-\, that in Feet of Flames is rather like The Gael by Scottish Dougie Maclean, used in the 1992 film The Last of the Mohicans:

They say that humble man played the banjo like no-one else. He had his unique banjo playing technique, involving just three fingers. Earl Scruggs. He died on 28 March, aged 88   :(

The banjo probably had its roots in Africa as it was developed by African slaves in Colonial America.  White people widely adapted it and I can not recall a black banjo player.

In keeping with the country-folk-bluegrass theme and also Kokopelli's  sample of Irish music and dance that featured Mr. Bojangles,  I am reminded of one of those songs spawned in one genre (American country) yet covered by singers from many disparate musical styles.

While the lyrics tell a sad story, the melody imparts life to the somber words and gives a measure of respect and pride to America's indigent.  It describes a true encounter.

The writer of the song, Jerry Walker, says he was inspired while in a New Orleans jail for public intoxication in 1965.  In his jail cell  "...he met a homeless white man who called himself 'Mr. Bojangles' ...  He had been arrested as part of a police sweep of indigent people that was carried out following a high-profile murder. The two men and others in the cell chatted about all manner of things, but when Mr. Bojangles told a story about his dog, the mood in the room turned heavy. Someone else in the cell asked for something to lighten the mood, and Mr. Bojangles obliged with a tap dance."

Sorry, starting at the 3:00 mark. The speed is increased compared to the original.
The Gael, my favorite by Dougie MacLean. This is close second.
I like this version best but I tend to lean towards a female voice.

How about the French influence?
Some of my favorite Cajun music.

Diggy Liggy Lo - Jimmy Buckley

A more toned down "popular" version
Don Rich & Buck Owens-Diggy Liggy Lo

Cajun style of dance, same song.
Dancing Two Step to Cajun music in New Orleans

More.

Jolie Blonde - Michael Doucet / Aly Bain / Ricky Skaggs

My favorite Cajun song, I prefer the Jo-El Sonnier version but this will do nicely.
Chere Tout Toute'- Mélange

Jambalaya "on the Bayou' - Hank Williams

Last one.
