It could be that the column is standing still for a reason we don't know about just yet.  Perhaps from a strategic standpoint, that is where Russia wants them to be.

Fathertime!

Just listened to a podcast about this very situation. Russia is having massive logistical problems. Those vehicles are extremely under-maintained, and apparently the 'tires' on these vehicles are not made for muddy off-terrain maneuvers. Thus, they're stuck jamming up paved roads.

If there's any truth to the report that Russia thus far had suffered 498 dead, and 1,500 wounded, that's alarmingly bad news militarily for Russia, considering the overwhelming force it brought to Ukraine for the fight. Consider this comparison for a minute, it took the US 10 months in the invasion of Iraq to suffer its first 500 dead, where it took Russia less than a week in a very familiar territory.

The figure of 498 came directly from the Kremlin,so if anything it's actually higher in reality.
Just saying it like it is.

Sounds possible if it isn't coming out of our western media.

The Ukrainian troops can only attack the column from suitable vantage points, which of course will be protected by Russian troops.

You can't just rock up in a field in a flat terrain, stand or lie there and fire anti-tank missiles....the Russian troops and Tanks will be hitting you with everything they've got while you're in such an exposed position.

If you can find a house to shelter behind the Russians will just hit it with a missile and that's you done for.

It will actually be easier to inflict damage on the Russian forces in Kiev..it will be carnage in confined spaces, with Ukrainian troops having cover to operate from.

Russia's troops will know this..hence their hesitation in entering the city.

This isn't a Rambo movie Trench..this is real life.

Air strikes would be the best way to attack the column but with seemingly no undamaged airfields to operate from this is not an option.

Drones would have been another option, but we don't know if Russia has knocked out all their operating capabilities or not.

The Ukrainian troops have been preparing for this for eight years, with specialized training from NATO....i think we can assume they know what they're doing.

The Ukrainian Army just have to hit them en-masse, bring up a lot of troops to the Russian Army north of Kyiv. They've got to expect to take a lot of casualties but if they bring up enough troops they will get in the necessary kills. For it to work they need to all attack at the same time and be spread out a little so not too many are taken out in one. Use of alit of anti tank weapons as well as rifles to keep away the Russian infantry is essential of course.

The Russians have rumbled the Ukrainians plan to use the cities as a vast bunker network so the Russians have started pounding it with missiles, etc to break the resistance. If Ukrainian forces sit it out there they are sitting ducks. For Ukraine, Russia getting stuck just 15-20 miles from them is a gift they shouldn't pass over, it's their one chance to inflict a big enough defeat on the Russians to bring them to the negotiation table on their terms. It's like the old medieval battle version of horses getting stuck in the mud. They need to attack them now while they are vulnerable and in difficulty. If they wait only the inevitable defeat stuck inside a city you can't get out of being pounded with food & water running out beckons.

Wife reports from friends that Russians are shooting heavily into  all houses that they pass by in small villages in order to limit ability of any Ukrainians in the houses to shoot at them.

I wouldn't think the Ukrainians will last another week.
What do you think now?

After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

Apparently the 'sticking point' in current negotiations is Ukraine recognising that Crimea and the Donbass & Lugansk regions are no longer part of Ukraine:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10620527/Ukraine-Russia-significant-steps-agreement-ceasefire-withdrawal.html

Seeing that has been the sticking point since 2014 I'm not sure if that will become unstuck in a hurry now. Looks like the war might be going on a fair bit longer. Possibly if both sides just agreed to cease hostilities over the Donbass & Luhansk region including the separatists and it remain theoretically a disputed region who knows. My guess is that any agreement may be a reach on the Donbass & Luhansk region.
