After battling with Russian for the past few years doesn't the once-difficult looking French look SOOO easy! Especially to us Brits whose language skills consist of pointing and speaking English loudly.
My schoolboy Russian:

I'm 'helping' Nadia with her German, I'd give German a 'Ste' rating of 'quite difficult'. French a 'Ste' rating of 'dead easy', Italian 'dead easy'. Russian 'bloody impossible'.

I will agree with that Ste. I studied French for 3 years in school and had I ever had an occasion to go somewhere it was spoken for a few weeks would have been nealry fluent. I tried to learn Italian from tapes for two weeks before making a trip long ago and could understand some of the conversations I heard. Spanish is easy too. I learned to read it from corresponding to a few gals in Latin America with little difficulty.
I have been trying to learn Russian for 10 years and still don't know didly. I have probably put 10 times the effort in learning Russian that I did French. I can still read French quite well and can just manage an occassional sentance in Russian. In the past year I have gotten to the point that sometimes I can follow basic conversations but not for long.

I think Hungarian is similar to Finnish - another bugger of a langauge with 15 cases (Russian only has 6) and no word for please!

Just brushed up my French by listening to it for 4 days :)
Hungarian is about the only language I did not get a grasp of. Usually when in a country I can understand certain words and sentences but not in Hungary. Even Chinese was more structured when listening to it for one night.
Another difficult one was Portugese. Not reading, but the way they speak sounds like Ste's Russian :o

Hungarian is with Finish,Estonian and Basque one of the few non-indoeuropean languages in Europe.BTW Andrew how is your Estonian doing?Or still struggling with Russian? :)

Hungarian !!! Very complex language... by example, they say "Töredezettségmentesítőtleníttethetetlenségtelenítőtlenkedhetnétek" ( yes, a single word of 65 letters ), that you can translate by "you could constantly mention the lack [of a software] that makes it impossible to have anyone make something free of a defragmenter"...
Why use so complex word when everywhere in the world, people use the same word for describe these situation... in French, English, Russian, etc, the translation wil be "Windows" from Microsoft ;D
Now, try to promounce this :

who is translated by :
" Five Turks are massaging five Greeks amid everlasting delights. "

Since i am lazy, it is more easy with wiki... nothing bad to use modern technic... by example, i have communicate with my first wife via usual letter... 2 week go, two week return... now, i have communicate with my new girlfriend using internet... one of two e-mail day... result, in one week, i have know more my new girlfriend that my ex-wife in one year !!!
And imagine a paper version of wiki, with 1.163.234 article... i will need a second home for store it ::)

I have missed this post otherwise I would have asked it when it was written: Ste, are you referring to Hungarian or Finnish language when you say that it has no word for please? Just because in Hungarian there are at least half dozen of words for please.
According to my Russian teacher too, Hungarian is more difficult than Russian. Coco is still bravely learning it :D

J'ai entendu parler que ce sont tous les chancons pour les enfants. Mais avec cet entretien comme ca, est-ce que ce sont les chancons destinee vraiment pour les enfants? :)

en fait il s' agit de chansons traditionelles, qui sont apprise aux enfants. Meme si je vis au Canada, mes enfants les connaissent !
Si on regarde les contes pour enfants de Charles Perrault ou autres, c' est plus terrible:
Peau d' Ane : le roi veut epouser sa fille
Le petit chaperon rouge: Le loup mange la grand mere et le petit chaperon rouge
Pleins de contes utilisent le diable comme participant et expriment les peurs et les inquietudes de leur epoque. Cotes chansons, elles ont bien souvent un double sens, un pour les parents et un pour les enfants (la bergere qui rencontre les 3 beaux mousquetaires...)

Oui, d'accord, des contes expriment ce qu 'interesse les gens. Mais si un jeune homme offre a une belle de partager son lit comme dans les deuxieme clip, je ne suis pas sure si les enfants vont la comprendre ;)

Il y a des francophones partout au Canada. Si je ne me trompe pas, il y a plus de 100,000 francophones à Toronto. Ce qui est fascinant est la mondialization des francophones au Canada: bon nombre des francophones que je connais maintenant sont originaires de l'Afrique.

J'habite à Montreal mais je suis Français, j'ai immigré il y a 10 ans au Canada. Il y a des francophones en Ontario mais peu, la majorité sont au Quebec et au Nouveau Brunswick. La mondialisation des francophones est du en grande partie à la politique d'immigration du Quebec qui favorise les francophones. La plus grande majorité aujourd'hui provient d'Afrique du nord et de l'ouest (les anciennes colonies françaises et belges). Beaucoup de français émigrent aussi mais peu reste après 5 ans. On estime le taux de retour pour ceux ci à près de 80% après cette période.
Beaucoup pensent trouver des français en amérique du nord quand en fait ce sont des nord américains qui parlent français. L'adaption est tres difficile pour une majorité.

on ne demande pas de prime abord si elle veulent dormir avec vous, mais d'abord comment elle se portent, si tout va bien, on offre des fleurs, on l'invite au restaurant, bref, on fait le paon....après, ça vient tout seul.....
Quant au français que je peux lire ici, c'est assez comique.....
