Russian Geo-Political History
« on: November 09, 2014, 01:11:12 PM »

Article by: Kirill Mikhailov

Russian neo-imperialistic propaganda has been claiming that the annexation of Crimea is a form of ?historical justice.? Perhaps, most famously, in his March 16th speech during an event in the Kremlin formalizing the annexation, Vladimir Putin stated that ?Crimea has always been an integral part of Russia.? Even though this claim is laughable (Crimea was a part of Russia for 204 years, 37 of which it spent in Soviet Ukraine, while the independent Crimean Tatar state existed there for almost 3.5 centuries, and the Byzantines ruled Crimea for 650 years), it is still an example of truly dangerous rhetoric that could trigger endless conflicts around the world. Perhaps the most vulnerable to that kind of reasoning is Russia itself, with vast territories once taken from her neighbors over the years.

Exactly.  An easy one there would be Chechnya and Dagestan.  A much larger area of course will be areas once ruled by the Mongols and areas once ruled by Imperial China.

I especially expect China to take large swaths of territory from Russia in the next 100 years, and I won't be at all surprised if they use the Russians current logic against them (we must protect ethnic Chinese language speakers from those Russian barbarians).

Turnabout's fair play!

joke, sort of..

"Just imagine, Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama are frozen for fifty years. When they're eventually thawed out, they take a walk through a pedestrian zone in New York, 2063. All of a sudden, Putin bursts out laughing.

"What the Frak?" says Obama.

"I just saw a newspaper headline," says Putin. "USA still in economic crisis after 50 years!"

Obama is a bit ashamed, but they continue their walk. All of a sudden, Obama bursts out laughing.

"What the Frak?" says Putin.

"I just saw a newspaper headline," says Obama. "Tensions rise on the German-Chinese border!"

The Turkish newspaper Hürriyet reports that if the Autonomous Republic of Crimea announces its independence, then it falls under Turkish rule. This is being reported by ipress.ua with reference to Espresso TV.

Based on what the author of the article wrote, this is confirmed by the agreement which was signed 230 years ago by the Ottoman and Russian empires.

According to the agreement, signed by the the Russian empress Catherine the Great on April 19, 1783, the Crimean peninsula will pass from the Ottoman empire to the Russian empire.

“However, one of the most important points is the clause that stipulates conditions that if the peninsula does not declare its independence then it cannot be transferred to a third party. Otherwise, Crimea must automatically be returned under the aegis of Turkey,” claims the author."

When the theft of Krym began there was talk of Turkey shutting down the Bosphorus Strait to all Russian shipping. That way the Black Sea would be locked up to all Russian shipping, military and merchant. They have turned back shipping who's manifest papers show Stebastopol Russia instead of Stebastopol UA.

But this like all Russian treaties isn't worth the paper it was written on.
