Russia new law criminalizes insulting the State

In one more sign of the tightening noose around freedom of speech, Russia's Duma or lower legislature had the third reading of a bill which criminalizes insulting the State.   It is expected to pass the upper house and be signed into law.

Some of those restrictions already exist in the EU, but in some EU states, individuals aren't given the option of removing materials before they are fined.  Sweden and Germany are the examples that are on the top of my head.  I'm not commenting on the law, just that there are different views on speech, even in democracies.


I think American concepts, and legal protections, of speech, are unique in the world.

As a side note...
Unfortunately, the political polarization in the USA has become like a cold civil war.

The Democratic National Committee said Wednesday that "Fox News will not serve as a media partner for the 2020 Democratic primary debates."The organization cited recent reporting in The New Yorker about the mutually beneficial relationship between Fox and the Trump administration. DNC chair Tom Perez called it an "inappropriate relationship."The DNC has been in talks with many networks, including CNN and Fox, about holding primary season debates.The first debate will take place this June on NBC, MSNBC and Telemundo. The second debate will take place in July on CNN. Television partners for the remaining debates have yet to be announced.

With possibly 20-30 potential Democrat candidates...what kind of primary debates are forthcoming? The usual liberal/'progressive' networks will be included. From the AP link above...

Think Boethius is joking? Unfortunately she's correct. In much of the EU, in fact in the majority of the EU, insulting the state or leadership can result in a criminal charge with a fine or imprisonment.

Could you please find us examples of sucj 'similar laws' in any EU state?

As I mentioned in January..one only  has to look at some of the laws introduced in the RF to realise the constitution is meaningless.
