New Ukraine visa rules for EU citizens
« on: February 20, 2005, 12:00:58 PM »
I have just confirmed with my friends in Ukraine that new simplified tourist visa rules will be in place by late April 2005 for EU citizens.

This May Kiev will host the Eurovision song contest (because Russlana won the competition last year) - the new rules will be in force for this event.

Under the new regime no formal torist visa will will be required.  EU citizens will simply buy travel tickets and pay for a "tourist visa tax" (current thinking is this will be between $20 to $40 per trip) on arrival at the airport.

US citizens are not covered by these new rules but hopefully it will not be long before they are.

Hello Leslie,

your information are not fully correct and complete ... below the official text :

For those whose first point of entry is Odessa or Simferopol, a simplified visa process is available. Under this simplified process, visa is issued in the airport and allows for up to 14 days' stay in Ukraine (including days of arrival and departure). The consular fee is $30 (charged in the airport). Passport 2 passport size photos are required, and you will need to fill out visa application as well.

The citizens of following countries qualify for simplified visa:
- USA and Canada
- European Union Countries
- Japan
- Turkey

Please note, you cannot get your visa in the airport just having your passport. You also need to have a tourist voucher from Ukraine based travel agency or tour operator.

The citizens of following countries qualify for a tourist visa without voucher if they buy a flight ticket from Ukrainian Airline : European Union Countries, USA and Canada, Japan, and  Switzerland

You can bring the following items in Ukraine duty free:

USD 10,000 cash and/or travel checks or less (please note, you should declare the amount if it exceeds USD 1,000 to be able to bring it out of Ukraine)
USD 50,000 or less in checks (subject of customs declaration)
Up to 100 grams (0,22 lbs) of jewelry (subject of customs declaration)
Up to 50 kg (110 lbs) of goods with the total value up to EUR 200 (USD $240)
Cigarettes/Tobacco: up to 20 packs (cigarettes) or 200 grams (0.44 lbs)

These new rule are working since begin January, short time after the election of the new president... and stay active until the Ukrainian gouverment change it... maybe stay for always... i don't understand why only these two airport... maybe for Kiev and other, it will come later...

These changes were only announced last friday. See

http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=41647489c18bbcc7

There were reports on TV news in Ukraine over the weekend which is how I was informed.

Jack - the details have not been formally announced yet but 90 days is being discussed on TV.

Bruno - The rules you describe were operating last summer as a trial mainly to improve foreign tourism to Krym.  These rule changes were agreed with the EU commisioner on Friday 18th February.
